David Luiz set to become world's most expensive defender

Looks like the bar for good players is now £40m plus
£30m is the new £20m, or something like that. I remember saying this loads around the time we signed Mata and people said we overpaid, the sad fact is that this is how much top quality players cost these days

Bit of a random thought but Jonathan Wilson was talking about centre backs last night and made an interesting point that amongst the very best teams, an inability to defend well is not actually a deal-breaker. He was using Ramos as the example and pointing out that in 8 or 9 out of every 10 matches he plays he sees more of the ball in and around the half way line than he will in his own box. So long as you pair someone like that with a really top defender his ability on the ball can add so much to the team that it's probably worth the occasional defensive brainfart.

I still think it's bizarre but this kind of thinking is what led Chelsea to paying £26m in the first place and led Madrid to pay €27m for Ramos almost a decade ago so clearly the decision-makers at big clubs think players are worth this for that reason. What I don't get is why he'd cost more than Silva (at the same age) despite clearly being a worse defender on top of being less effective at building attacks. It must just have something to do with his pace/pressing game and the way these teams want to play. I suppose Hummels would be going for ~£40m too.

Slightly off topic but with all the talk about paying huge money for an 18 year old fullback and price inflation, not that long ago paying £8m for a teenage whizkid at fullback was seen as a bit of a waste:

Again why do we need an £8m RB when the money'd be better spent on CM?

The only problem is we wouldn't want to spend that much money on someone who wouldn't get into the first team for a while.

Plus, PSG have some good midfielders who are defensively solid. The likes of Motta, Matuidi, Verratti, Rabiot, and Cabaye can all do a job covering for Luiz and Marquinhos.

Even then, I feel like his value is more on his aggressive ball-winning ability and his technique. He's still defensively shaky, but I guess if he plays alongside Thiago Silva with Matuidi, Motta, and Verratti ahead of him, he can be a useful player and a more reliable option than Marquinhos.

The Marquinos thing might be the strangest part of this transfer. Just last summer they spent more than 30 million on him. So why are they buying another defender to play ahead of him? Now they have three 30 million+ defenders.

£50M feck me what were PSG thinking. Deal of the century for Chelsea.

He is an atrocious defender, £50M would be steep for the best defender in the world let alone a 28 year old who can't defend.

There are Conference North defenders who are more natural and reliable defenders.

Got exposed tonight without Thiago next to him, in my opinion. Awful performance. Not just from him, mind, but as the captain, he lacked any sort of leadership, and made some very strange decisions throughout the game.

On that performance PSG must be having second thoughts. But i couldn't care less, it's PSG's money to waste.

Yeah, it is absolutely worth noting that their ratings are absolutely worthless.

And to think Bayern would have spent around 30 million for the dude, had PSG not stepped in to... *cough* steal him.

Well played, my french qatari friends.

What were they thinking.. I refuse to believe PSG think David Luiz is worth that kind of money. There has to have been another motive. Maybe it was done as a statement to show that they won't stop spending despite the FFP thing. Or maybe they thought Silva and Luiz, the Brazilian centre backs would be incredibly marketable. I really don't know, but its a ridiculous amount of money.

Although Eamon Dunphy was going a bit over the top when he said he'd be a liability in the League of Ireland .

They took him right under our noses, I'm so distraught :nervous:

50 million from PSG for Luis + 37 million from us for Mata have gone a long way in funding Mourhino's transfer dealings.

You could've united the Dante-Luiz partnership at club level! I imagine the disappointment of not managing to do that keeps you awake at night.

He's been playing with Marquinho as Silva is injured but they've looked alright. PSG have been shit in general though in terms of their offense.

The strength of PSGs midfield will make Luiz look better than he is. They'll only ever really be up against it against the better teams in the champions league.
