David Luiz set to become world's most expensive defender

I did not expect to wake up to this news. How can Chelsea get such a good deal when they clearly don't fancy him?

David Luiz is not worth 50m even if he came with 50m in a suitcase. Maybe they are trying to lure him away from Barca who are interested.

So PSG don't care about the FFP. Like their president said "No one will stop us, I repeat. We buy who we want. How? That's our business."

This is such a win-win for Chelsea. World record transfer of £40-50 million for a defender who can't defend, and in return they make keeping in line with FFP that much easier. Unbelievable stuff.

His attitude on the pitch is the main reason (non Chelsea) fans despise him. He is quite useful as a DM or anchorman in a 3 man midfield with the right players behind and in front of him, very energetic, strong and good on the ball. I don't rate him as a CB either because his lack of discipline leads to many unforced errors that no one can cover. Still, there were big games in which he remained focused and performed very well as a CB. And he can also play in a high defensive line.

PSG will always have to pay more when they want to bring a player from the Premier League or La Liga to Ligue 1. That fact that Luiz is a player who'll be in Brazil's starting xi for the World Cup may also have something to do with the fee. And don't forget that everybody knows that PSG can spend big, so they might try to earn some extra money.

What i don't understand is the logic behind the transfer from a PSG perspective. It's almost certain that Luiz won't go to PSG to sit on the bench. Right now PSG have Motta playing deep in their 3 man midfield and they have Silva-Alex at the back. You can't have both Motta and Luiz in your midfield cause then you'll compete with Carrick-Fellaini for the most immobile midfield pairing. At the back Silva and Alex are better than Luiz in that position.

Maybe there will be a change of plans from Blanc next season with more pressure on the ball and a more "demanding" team on the pitch with the lines higher than usual. But it's still quite a risk, considering that you can sign better CBs or DMs with that kind of money and improve your current team.

He was one of Chelsea's best players in their tie with PSG this past season so when PSG's owner watched him his eyes probably lit up like a kid in a toy store. "I must have him!"

For everyone bringing up PSG and FFP, didn't they receive the same punishment or very similar to City? That they can't spend more than £50m + money from player sales? If that's true than they can afford to buy Luiz and allow Marquinos to leave if necessary.

There's something bent about this deal if it goes through. Two clubs under the FFP thumb and silly money being thrown about.

Yeah but that's not the problem. The issue is that they have to get close to breaking even this coming financial year.

Huge fee but he may go on to be one of the stars of the World Cup.

Off the top of my head the Carroll and Fellaini were more insane fees.
Insane, hes talented, but this will be up there with Andy Carroll in terms of over spending.

In fairness Chelsea paid Benfica £24m + Matic for Luiz.

They ended up spending £21m buying Matic back so the overall cost of the Luiz transfer to Chelsea was £45m, they wouldn't even be breaking even if they get £40m for him.

Hmm. So they decided to sell Sahko, a local born young defender with bags of potential, who loves and captained the club at age 17, to splash nearly €50m euros on.... David Luiz?? They could probably sign Benatia or Hummels for that kind of money.

He'll definitely be a more effective player in that sort of system and may even be seen as one of the best around for a short period - like Pique - but paying that kind of money for him? It's more than Thiago Silva cost at the same age, and he'd already shown himself to be a world class player in a variety of systems. David Luiz on the other hand has done stuff like this:

 beautiful

It's all about the hair. Why do you think Fellaini cost so much?

I don't rule out these things having some sort of intangible impact. I think Abel Xavier made his career thanks to his hair. He was always so average, but everyone knew who he was.

Is Thiago Silva that good that he gets to choose 50 million of his clubs money to pick his defensive partner ?

Liverpool spending £35m on Carroll doesn't look as bad now.....Oh wait it still does. Funny as hell!

Actually they can't afford David Luiz since their payroll has been ceiled, they can't afford his wage unless they offload one of their big contract player.

WTF.

I still don't get the hype over him. Barca were interested and now PSG are willing to pay that much for him.

Hummels and Benatia aren't flamboyant, outspoken, highly marketable players like Luiz is. Luiz is out there as the face of products and marketing campaigns and is one the faces of the most famous football country's national team.

This is the type of signing PSG loves. Big, flashy names or the flavor of the month. Pastore, Lucas, Ibra, Cavani, Silva. Luiz may be next.

But this will be PSG over spending. Chelsea probably over spent by 5-10m. At the time Matic would have be worth 5m?, if that.

Buying Matic back, they were buying a much better experienced player, they could not achieved had they kept him.

I think people need to pause really. Don't forget only a week ago there was a story that Luiz is Barcelona-bound.

I don't think anyone cares where he goes but the price is what everyone is balking at.

Pastore, there is a player we haven't heard of in a while. What happened to him?
Hasn't been nearly as good as he was expected to be and has basically been a bust for the price they payed for him.

An absolute liability as a defender - worth 20m max imo.
