No, he sold him because he fancied Cahill and JT as a partnership (which was justified as they were the best CB partnership in the league that season) and because PSG offered a ridiculous amount that we couldn't possibly turn down.
And how would you possibly know that?

I'm amazed by how low key Chelsea's transfer dealings have been this summer. Luiz is not someone most teams at Chelsea' level would want but there you go.

What you said didn't really need addressing did it? That we've left it late is a statement of fact. I was just pointing out that we didn't simply "let him go", we sold him for a world record fee.

Ah, so you agree that.... 'this is a deal reflective of Chelsea's increasing urgency for a defensive signing.'

And that, 'Chelsea have been searching for centre backs all summer, only to find themselves re-signing a player they let go, with only a few hours left.'

So, but for circumstance (no time, offers rejected, lack of options etc), Luiz would not be returning.

Costa and Luiz in one team after their "cuddles" in UCL would be a funny story

Nice business from PSG. Was signed for 50M€ and will go for 40M€. Already replaced in defense with Marquinhos presumably grabbing a regular spot and Rodrigo Caio could also sign for 12M€. For the few games he was playing in midfield, Krychowiak has been signed. Clear upgrades over Luiz everywhere. 80M€ spent, 70M€ in this summer for them.

Really dont understand why Chelsea would be wanting him back, for 35m or whatever the fee is surely there are better options out there.

It'll be funny to see him and Costa outcunt each other.

Never rated him. Ball playing centerbacks are great, but their ball playing ability is a plus. Being able to actually defend is probably a prerequisite. He also seems like the least conte centerback ive ever seen.

Horrible.
How so? Think we'll have a squad good enough to make the top 4 which is the only real aim this season amongst realistic Chelsea fans. No one thinks we're winning the title.

With Luiz you either laugh or have a mental breakdown. He very quickly became one of the fans favourite players ever though more for his personality than anything strictly football related. He's genuinely lovely, silly, frustrating and wonderful all at the same time. He'll give the team absolutely everything, and have his heart on his sleeve the whole time. I wanted him as our captain after JT, regardless of his occasionally inexplicable lapses of concentration. Despite the money we got for him, I was genuinely gutted when we sold him.
Yeah, I can imagine how gutting it would be to lose him. Some of my personal favourite moments in football have come from Luiz, from the comforting of Rodriguez after Columbia got knocked out of the world cup to the drunk interview after the CL final (I think:lol:) he seems a top bloke. If he can get past those lapses in concentration he'll do very well as he's proven he can do. Would love him at United just for his personality.

Still don't think we'll go for a back 3.

My guess is: 4-3-3

If they'd field these players in this formation, I think they'd have switched Matic and Kantes positions.

He can defend.

I had never heard of Bailly - but good god I am glad we snapped him up early.

I'll agree that we've left it late, I'll agree that if we signed someone else, we would not be signing Luiz. Just because he's not the first choice, does not mean he's a bad choice.

But for circumstances, every transfer ever might not have happened.

If you said to me a couple of months ago we'd end up with the transfers in we have (if Luiz does sign), I'd have bitten your hand off. Would I prefer to have signed Bonucci than Luiz? Sure but you don't always get what you want.

We did. Jose did.

£50m

PSG basically handing Chelsea the money to buy a couple of world class players in exchange for a player Mourinho hardly rates. If this happens Jose will be laughing himself to sleep all summer.

It's the Daily Mail, though so pinch of salt.

He's a very good footballer, just a terrible defender. May not matter much in France, though.

The key word there was 'always'. I seem to remember a few windows where there was a gaping space where your new midfield should have been. ;)

I know, I couldn't help myself. We're just revelling in the fact that we have no business to do today.

That specific team he posted is horrible. 7 primarily defensive minded players, with Willian, Costa and Hazard left to do the damage.

I'd take a CB out and add Oscar or Fabregas into that team. I don't think a title challenge is unrealistic for you guys.

He was always very popular with the fans. Loud-mouthed extroverts like him always go down well with home fans but rub oppo fans the wrong way.

You didn't seem to think that a few years ago in the thread when he was sold.

I'm just jealous mate, it used to be us who got our business done early and just sat back on transfer day. I'm really hoping this last minute stuff doesn't become a habit for us!

I dont know what to say...

On one hand, he is talented, and Conte puts great emphasis in his defense so must be sure he can fit into the defense he wants

On the other hand, he can be a colossus donkey and Chelsea did great to fleece PSG for 50m..

I'm shocked. Couldn't believe how much he went for and now we're getting him back for quite a lot of money. He 's a gifted athlete and good technically but he has no brain. We must be desperate to get another CB after missing out on Koulibaly and Romagnoli. Still, can't believу we're actually bringing him back.

Surprised so many fellow CFC fas are excited over the news. I guess they tend to remember his larger than life personality and some great goals Luiz scored for us and choose to ignore his many faults. He was also part of the team that won the Europa League and the CL for the club, he was playing with the bad hamstring in the Munich final and scored one of the penalties. Still, can't wrap my mind around this transfer.
