Ahhh right :wenger:

I think Cech was initially signed as backup for Cudicini, but took his chance when he got it. I don't think anyone would suggest that because De Gea's 20 it's impossible for him to do the job for us, but I think it's fair to say his age would seem to increase the likelihood of there being feckups from time to time.

Assuming United have done their scouting to the level we would expect, obviously they feel the pros outweigh the cons. I still expect growing pains, though.

Agreed. If it's true I hope people give him a chance before jumping down his neck after the first mistake he makes. (Too much to hope?)

You can't expect Van Der Saar from the off.

Sky: Jeff Stelling from Sky Sports confirmed that we will be signing De Gea as a replacement for Van Der Sar. #MUFC

If the club have got this gamble right, then we may not have another goalkeeping dilemma for another decade. Quite exciting.

I hope this is an indication that we will have all of our business tied up asap. I can't stand "sagas."

It's apt to post this wonderful gif in here, right?

I love Top, I really do.

Our former goalie, Ricardo on de Gea:

“De Gea doesn’t have nerves. Spain has produced the best goalkeepers in the world like Iker Casillas, Victor Valdes, Pepe Reina, Cesar and now De Gea. I spent three years at Old Trafford and I’m convinced that De Gea is good enough to play for Manchester. His concentration is at a high level throughout the game and he’s comfortable with high balls. He is very confident despite being so young."

“He does not worry when he plays against Barcelona or Real Madrid. That is a good sign because some goalkeepers become nervous when they play in front of big crowds in the biggest stadiums like Old Trafford. There are very few goalkeepers who can deal with that. Some goalkeepers need to feel the confidence of the manager. De Gea is the type of goalkeeper who can give the manager confidence.”

Yep. I think the absence of a major summer tournament (barring the Copa America) means that it's easier to conclude the deals earlier. It's also makes sense as you can integrate the players through pre season before the results and performances matter.

Music to my ears. :)

17m, thats a big fee for a young keeper, hope it will paid off....

He's so young. It's a big risk. I trust you again though Fergie.

We're losing the best keeper in the world. Happy we're getting him, but there won't be any cocks involved for this one.

But we knew we were losing him.. and he won't be one of the best keepers in the world for long. We're going to sign one of the best young keepers in the world who could go on to play for us for decades.. Of course there's cocks out. :)

This idea is nonsense. The likes of Edwin, Casillas, Schmeichel, Buffon, Cesar, and all great keepers didn't drop from the sky at 28 and just become world-class at once. They were all young at one time and benefited from a little faith in them from the clubs they were given their breaks at...of which Madrid, Inter, and Parma aren't too shabby.

If you are good enough, you are old enough. We've seen that with countless United player's over the years, and by all accounts, De Gea is good enough and Atletico Madrid in La Liga is hardly an unproven background for a player is it?

------------De Gea-----------

Rafael ---- Smalling--- ???--- Fabio

Pretty impressive future.

Do, did you lot settle on how I should say his name? Unless corrected i'm going with David (english style) de (like the letter "d") Gea (gay).

David (Like David Villa, it's really Da-veed) De Hey-a

Yes it is.

I'm more or less accepting it as a given myself, but it's my understanding that it won't be announced till Monday. (Unless someone announced it tonight, it isn't on the clubs site yet)

???? = Evans - he's looked quite good recently. Smalling has had one good season and I thought Evans was equally impressive 2 years ago. He's getting back his confidence and will continue to improve.
