Yes I think it is a bit. Arabic has three h-like sounds so it depends which one you mean. According to Wikipedia their /x/ varies quite a lot between dialects as to how far or back it's pronounced.

It's the one that's almost like the 'ch/kh' in Arabic/Hebrew that comes out from the back of the throat, it's not as harsh....but it's heavier or longer than the H in English. Almost like 'hhhhhhheat'.

Good post from Golden Blunder there on the other page. When you considered we've had two of the best goalkeepers to have played the game, we've also had a pile of shite in nets.

Hopefully this de Gea punter'll do the business but I think he should've gone for some established keeper personally

In this case it's the H or G pronounced deep inside the throat.

Hebrew's got the same H sound.

So I think this is right but I'm a bit rusty... click links for sound files.

Hebrew used to have the full range of back consonants you get in modern Arabic, but it's merged a lot of them under the influence of European speakers. So /x/ (chaf) and /ħ/ (het) are both now /χ/, which is not far from the Spanish one, and they also retain the glottal /h/ and glottal stop (aleph) like in English. Only the Mizrahi and a few old-school speakers now use the way-back, pharyngeal /ʕ/ (ayin) and /ħ/ (het).

I could never get that v/b bit right though, I could never merge them together in the way you're meant to. In the sense that I don't think -veed or -beed is completely right, but I can't find an in between! Definitely closer to -veed though. I think I've got the deep-throat bit sorted.

I'm going to pretend its pronounced

Man-uel Noi-errrr

Make a continuous 'm' sound, then close your nostrils completely with your fingers so no air can escape through your nose, and as it tries to get out your mouth allow the lips to part a tiny bit to let it through (but not so much that you round them into a 'w'). They should vibrate with a continuous buzzing which is /β̞/.

You probably make this sound naturally in fast speech when saying things like government or get 'em very drunk.

Alternatively, just say David the Gay.

Arabic-Hebrew-English dictionary

This is a guttural similar to the ch in the Scottish "loch" but much lighter, made at the back of the throat. In Hebrew, this letter is the first letter of the word " 'haver," which means "friend." Arabic words that use this letter and may be familiar to Westerners are 'humous and 'hamas.

basically, Gea sounds more closer to that softer almost the back of the troat H sound. I think the CH/KH sound tickles the tonsils whereas the H that I'm trying to decribe just falls short of the tonsils, yet is still made from the back of the throat.

I actually think we're describing the same sound.

I hate trying to write down sounds but the ge is a bit like the hiii noise the cat makes when he's sneezing. The a is like the a's in Abba.

Just thought I'd post this here. Excuse the sensationalist music

Actually this one's better. He's got incredible reflexes.

We're not gonna get a goalkeeper as good as VDS, people need to stop thinking we will, De Gea can reach that level given time.

Experience!!

VDS built up 20 years' worth of experience. Of course De Gea doesn't have that. Under a 1st rate Goalkeeping Coach, playing for Manchester United (if he does) then hopefully he'll get that experience.

Looks like a 'done deal' to me!

“Edwin decided he wants to go out at the top, though he did have a wobble last week,” said Ferguson. “He came to see me and told me he was thinking about changing his mind. I had to tell him to be quick about it because we are in the middle of concluding a deal for a new keeper. He came back a couple of days later to say he would be sticking with his original decision to go, which I think at his age is the right thing for him to do.”

How does that quote confirm we've got De Gea any more than that we've got Steklenberg, or even Adler? It just confirms that we are in the middle of signing a new keeper.

Hopefully the club keeps him around the squad as a coach. Should things not work out with his replacement I wouldn't rule out him being registered and making a comeback at the earliest oportunity.

He is still among the best 6-7 keepers in the world easily.

Actually - you're right. According to some reports De Gea has now confirmed that he's leaving. It's obviously not Steklenburg as he said he had had no offer and the deal is meant to be close.

Adler??? Come on now!

It's De Gea as I've been saying all along!

That doesn't sound like Sir Alex, where'd you get that?
