David De Gea (SAF confirmed signing!)

If one lesson could be learnt from our previous mistakes in this regard is that being a world class shot stopper is not enough with United. A Manchester United goalkeeper needs to be an allrounder which also include total trust of the people in front of him. The blackburn game (and many others) showed that when our keeper is cack, then the defenders do not trust him and there's a communication breakdown. This contribute greatly in lowering the quality of our defending which end up pretty cack too. We cant afford that.

Now if United are going to bring in De Gea then he'll better be reaaalllyy good. Its not advisable replacing a feckin icon with a boy expecially in a role which is the most difficult in the world (Schmeichel words and not mine). However there had been instances where a young goalkeeper was able to do the job well. Take Buffon as an example.

I know this will be laughed at but I genuinely rated carroll higher than howard at their times at united and felt carroll was better in his performances than howard.

Its no laughing matter. When things got tough and our goalkeepers mistakes got frequent, there was little to choose between Howard and Carroll. In fact SAF himself kept rotating them.

What is the saying "if he is good enough he is old enough"...

Anyhow, he is one player that you want to be older, usually you want your star players to be younger but on this occasion it is quite different!

Manchester United believe they have secured their first signing of the summer.

Spain Under-21 goalkeeper David De Gea has confirmed he will leave Atletico Madrid at the end of the season, and now his club have accepted, in principle, a United offer of around £16million.

Great news if true, my choice to replace VDS and hopefully our number 1 for the next 10+ seasons.

:nono:

Anyway, seems like a good buy if true.

But only time will tell if he's any good for United.

The bid was accepted some time ago. The waiting time has been about De Gea making up his mind whether to shoot for glory or stay with Atleti.

De Gea would be really stupid if wants to stay at Atletico.

He has the chance to sign for Man United as our number 1.

Depends really, if he's not ready then moving to us too soon will put him under intense pressure and scrutiny, it will make or break him and he's very young, if he screws up it could feck him up where as if he gives himself a few more years to develop it could work out better for him long term.

It's not as simple as it seems at first glance.

In a way, it's exciting. The challenge is even bigger. The majority is, but not everyone plays just to win the league you know.

not every players get to challenge for the league title

but there are the occasional talented players in small teams who are targetted by big teams, the teams that challenge for the title

as a player, shouldn't you be ambitious enough to move to the bigger pond instead of being satisfied at your big fish in small pond role?

we all know why fabregas wants to leave arsenal for barcelona

Since you are now talking about 'only talented' players, then they should really join the big clubs if the opportunity arrives, no doubt about that.

2/15 is hardly a great record.

Chris Turner
At the club when Fergie took over. Did "ok" but kicked out a year later when Fergie bought...
Jim Leighton
14 clean sheets in his first season, then confidence deserted him in the 2nd season after a series of erractic displays. Dropped for FA cup final with place taken by understudy..
Les Sealey
free transfer, madcap goalkeeper. Excelled above his level. Helped United with the Cup Winners Cup final versus Barcelona. Who can ever forget his on-field argument with Jim McGregor? Would come back for a 2nd term a few years later. However, was never going to be long term, and replaced by..
Peter Schmeichel
Arguably the best goalkeeper ever. Key in years of success. During his time he was backed-up by..
Van Der Gouw & Tony Coton
Never let the side down. Very good gk's in their own rights. They were indeed unfortunate to be understudy to Schmeichel. After Schmeichel..
Bosnich
Free transfer. Highly rated and in fact his record was ok, with a man of the match performance in the World Club Cup final. Unfortunately injuries and off-field activities caught up with him..
Tiabi
started with a man of the match performance versus Liverpool then a series of gaffes over the next 4 matches. Booted out and replaced by..
Barthez
World class on his day, a world cup winner. Will always be remembered for trying to 'jock himself' by pulling his shorts up through his arse crack after being embarrased at Arsenal. Absolutely insane keeper who made me as nervous as a fat chicken running through Etheopia
Andy Goram
Only signed as a fat stop-gap. Immediately ate all the pies in the club canteen and rolled out by Fergie shortly after
Roy Carroll
Highly rated young keeper with international experience. Not as bad as some made out but not good enough to be first choice. Made the worlds best save versus Spurs when he prevented a certain goal by dropping a shot over his head into the net and then saving it from 6 yards behind the line. Would go on to compete with..
Tim Howard
Timmy Tourettes is in the nets,
fcuk off

Great first season. Jim Leighton syndrome then affected him and his twitching face went so mad that he couldn't actually see the ball. Booted out
Ricardo
Competing for the 3rd comedy clown award with Carroll and Howard. Always mixed up with a better player of the same name. When picked had a great habit of giving away penalties
Van Der Sar
Mr Consistent. The man is a legend
Tomas Kuszczak
Pole in Goal. Pillock in goal more like. Gives me the heebie jeebies
Ben Foster
Highly rated youngster. Another who couldn't handle the pressure and developed Jim Leighton Syndrome.

Others
Luke Steele
Signed for nominal sum, never really had a sniff. Son of the goalkeeping scout/coach
Paul Rachubka
meh..
John O'Shea
World class with 100% record. Should be utilised more often
Gary Walsh
highly promising young English goalkeeper. Unfortunately decided to head butt a goalpost and never really recovered to a high level after that. Went on to play for Middlesborough
Kevin Pilkington
Kevin Pilkington < Karl Pilkington
