Is he still thinking about if he wants to join us or not? If so, then maybe we shoud look elsewhere. I remember the time when every player wanted to join us at the first possible chance.

Every young Spanish player wanted to join us? When?

We've done next to nothing with Spanish players - though Pique improved his English and did a well paid apprenticeship. We're even a bit of a goalkeeping danger zone. I doubt he even thought about us as an option until he heard there was a bid coming.

He's young he's got years ahead of him. He says he loves Atletico and he enjoys living at home - he's got to know that he wants to move and he's ready to do it. It's not a minor thing

Plus - why would he want to get booed by his own fans for the rest of the season by letting on that he wants the move even if he does.

De Gea already said himself that he just wants to concentrate on Atleti and then decide after the season is over.

Fair enough guys, good points.

Let's say he joins us, would you be happy with it? I've not seem him play more than two or three games so can't reallt judge a player by that little time.

Id be happy cos hes not just another "good shot stopper". He can command his box well and his decisions more often than not are good ones.

You cant tell how his mentalitity would be playing at a stage like United. His concentration seems right as our keepers arent challenged for 90% of the game for most games. Hes been learning engish from what I remember hearing and I read his communication with defenders is good. Having leaders like Vidic and Rio would be good for him as well.

Its just tough to tell how he would cope with the price tag. Id hope he would be willing to rise to the challenge but we will see what his decision is (if in fact we are going for him). At the end of the season, if hes still pondering and cant decide, not sure hes the right person then.

Its all speculation until its confirmed of course.

I see it as pretty much done also. And while he wouldnt be my first choice, I think he'd be a great signing long term and in 5-10 years we'll be laughing about how well it turned out. But I wouldnt be surprised if he had a couple of problems next season as he tries to adapt.

If it turns out we dont sign him and its not because we signed Neuer instead... I'm going to be incredibly dissappointed.

The biggest help for a young GK like De Gea playing here, if he ends up coming here, is the presence of a solid back four and especially the presence of Rio and Vidic. It will help him adapt quicker.

Yes, but unfortunately the reality is that Smalling is likely to start most often in front of him. And Rafael at right back. Now would be a great time for Evra to find some form...

And VDS staying around as a consultant or coach, which I heard he was but cannot confirm.

It took Fergie such a long time to find a keeper that could truelly live up to the billing of Schmeichel and play at the levesl that he set.

In De Gea, he could well have a like for like replacement for Van der Sar. The similarities in the their styles of playare unreal and he's been dubbed Van de Gea by the fans.

If this is already done I'd be over the moon, he is a good keeper already with such a great scope to improve further. He's played 50 odd games in La Liga and has already won a Europa cup. He is a determined young lad who already won something and if he can bring that mentality to United he'd settle right in.

I think he might take a year or two off and then come back eventually. He is retiring to spend time with his wife and kids. So I don't think he is going to immediately take up the job at OT. A year maybe and then he will be back.

Neuer would be better. Looks more confident.

*runs away*

I was thinking you were going to mention the presence of Spanish speaking players in our squad would be an advantage with Anderson, Nani, Fabio and Rafael and Hernandez (all incidentally the same age bracket as De Gea).

I have not seen De Gea play at all, how does he compare to VDS with regards to playing the ball with his feet?

I think the confidence of having clean sheets is bigger than the language barrier. If the defense is bad and if we keeps letting in goals, it does not matter how many players he has in the team who speak Spanish.

Just think about it - if he was playing at Wigan and almost everyone there speaks Spanish (hypothetical), their defense sucks and he is going to concede one or two goals every week and sometimes even more. That is not at all going to help in get accustomed to the PL.

From what I've noticed, though it isnt as big a strength as it is for VDS, De Gea is as good as most with his feet. He has quite a long kick too which is of course another matter.

Man Utd scout Martin Ferguson watched Atletico Madrid keeper David De Gea on Saturday as the Reds prepare to launch a £15m bid.

Ferguson was caught on camera at the Cornellá-El Prat stadium in Barcelona as De Gea's Atletico drew 2-2 with Espanyol in La Liga.
Sir Alex Ferguson's brother, United's European scout, was there to check on the form of 20-year-old De Gea ahead of the club's main objective this summer - finding a long-term replacement for the retiring Edwin van der Sar.
The Red Devils are in pole position to conclude a deal, having identified De Gea as their prime target earlier this season when the United boss went to see him play against Valencia.
And last week's news that Portuguese 'super agent' Jorge Mendes has been working on brokering the deal is being taken as a sign that United are ready to push the transfer through.
Mendes will not act for the player in the transfer of De Gea, but could earn his fee as a facilitator for United while also finding future players for Atletico to spend their transfer fee on.

Actually he said in an interview I read that he was hoping to get a job at the club immediately, and that he had no intention of moving back to Holland. Nothing was sorted though.

I can hardly see a man like VdS taking a year or two completely off with no work whatsoever. It would probably kill him!

All of those players speak Portuguese as their mother tongue apart from Hernandez who is the only native Spanish speaker.

English and Welsh are practically identical since the countries are connected~!

They really aren't.

There's a few similarities between Italian and Spanish but Portugese is very different to both of them.

My understanding was that whilst they were different they are similar enough for a Portugese and Spanish person to be able to hold a conversation.

Ballbag claiming on TalkShite that deal almost done. But will have to wait till his agent contract expires end off May and Jorge Mendes can take over.

I really thought we would go for Steklenburg or Neuer before going for Dea Gea.

This De Gea potential transfer reminds me a bit of the Valencia rumours before he joined us, at the time it was well documented that we were interested at one stage a few months prior to him joining us it was fairly cleared the deal had already had been done.

I think Ferguson was going some real homework on Barcelona, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a scout in Madrid aswell.

I would rather have one of Lloris, Adler or De Gea over Steklenburg. De Gea is younger and has loads more potential than Steklenburg.

De Gea already speaks English so it's not really a concern if Hernandez is the only Spanish speaking player in the squad.

Martin Ferguson also watched Rui Patrício over the weekend. I don't know if he speaks English but Nani and Anderson do...

Ehh I believe Antonio Valencia is Spanish speaking too.

I think that's all he speaks :smirk:

Yep... tried talking to him on Twitter (Habla ingles?) All I'm seeing is spanish but how different is spanish from portuguese? Not much I reckon. Few words but pretty similar.

De Gea will be fine. It's just a matter of our back four trusting him as they trusted Edwin or will they just leave everything to Vida + Rio.
