That Spanish dude is absolutely certain we're getting him and he's right quite a lot of the time.

Atletico Madrid tell de Gea: Renew your contract or move to Manchester United | talkSPORT

Manchester United target David de Gea has been told to pledge his future to Atletico Madrid or be sold in the summer.

United are thought to be close to agreeing a deal for de Gea as a replacement for Edwin Van Der Sar, who is set to retire at the end of the season.

But Atletico are still hopeful of holding on to the 20-year-old this summer despite the interest from the Premier League leaders.

Now Atletico Madrid's CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has revealed that the club could be forced to offer De Gea an ulitmatum at the end of the season.

"We have met with him to negotiate a new deal on two occasions," Marin said on Onda Cero Radio.

"He has a contract with Atletico for three more seasons, so it is necessary to renew it and reasonable to revise his salary, which is well below his current performance.

"But at the end of the season there will be two choices - to renew or to leave."

He still has three years left on his contract. Clearly they want him to renew his contract due to the interest we are showing in him.

He's said it would be very hard to leave Atletico if Atletico fought to keep him. If they are doing more than just talking about it, we might need to find a new target

I think he has to stay that to keep the Athletico board/fans happy.. He is not going to go out and say something like Yes, I want to join Man Utd or xyz team.. He still is on their books and wants to remain number 1 until the season ends.. Also if by chance this transfer doesn't go through then he will look like a right arse having basically said he wants a transfer.. It is his boyhood club and also remains a good option for him to return to (if he fails in England) so I would imagine him wanting to leave the club in the best possible way so as to have a chance to return back to his boyhood club if required..

What were our first choices back then, do you remember? (just curious).

Bosnich.... and we got him - just turned out it was a poor choice. We should have gone for VDS (as Fergie has said) but we moved quickly and early to secure Bosnich on a free transfer and were not aware of VDS's availability til the deal for Bosnich was well done.

I know it's hard but let's wait with comparisons to 99... Until we sign an Italian in late August, that is.

I believe we did go for Van der Sar - but we were too late and he was literally on the plane to Turin.

Even though he said today he is definitely leaving Schalke and won't renew his contract, hasn't he said over and over 'I want to stay in Germany'?

Sorry I didn't word my question very well.

I meant who is our first choice to replace VDS.

We didn't go for VDS because Edwards agreed a deal with Bosnich behind SAF's back. The rumors that summer were Toldo, VDS, Bosnich and a few others, if memory serves.

When Barthez signed in 2000, the impression was given that he was a longer term target of Ferguson, so perhaps he was the first choice in 99 but not available. He certainly had a high profile at that point.

I think you're right. I recall Barthez or SAF mentioning that Monaco was approached for the player in 1999 but the club wouldn't budge. Barthez had a fallout with the club chairman or whatnot sometime during the next 12 months and demanded a transfer.

I've contemplated a few times that had the club signed VDS, Bosnich probably ends up at Juventus. But what if the club had signed Barthez in 1999 - where would Bosnich have gone then? I highly doubt he goes to Monaco for a year or two. Barca perhaps?

This is absolutely classic stuff from atletico. They want and need to sell to cover their debts but can't have the fans thinking/knowing that so responsibility for any move is being put at de gea's door. On the flip side de gea is also trying to keep the fans on side. There's feck all reason in reality why de gea would need to renew with three years left..

Maybe nowhere. He surely knew early enough we were interested. If we hadn't been, maybe he would have signed a new deal with Villa.

Would Juve have really gone for Bosnich? I can't remember tbh but find it nigh on impossible to believe any of the major clubs outside of England would have gone for him.

Picked this up from a 1999 Guardian article.

As gambles go the one made by Mark Bosnich came to spectacular fruition yesterday, to the tune of £6m, when he completed a move from Aston Villa to Manchester United under the Bosman ruling.

The Australian goalkeeper had rejected offers from Roma and Juventus, as well as overtures by Liverpool, hoping against hope that United, the club who introduced him to English football a decade ago, would renew their interest.

Last Thursday, within hours of securing the Treble, United's manager Alex Ferguson made his first contact with the player.

A four-year deal was completed - formally to be initiated on July 1 - which will pay Bosnich an estimated £30,000 a week for the next four years.

"If I wanted to go for the money I could have lived like a king for the rest of my life, and another life, and another one after that," said Bosnich. "But always at the back of my mind was the thought that if I waited until the end of the season, I might get a call from here. I gambled, really, and it paid off."

That risk was the easy part, of course. Far more difficult will be taking over from Peter Schmeichel, the Dane who amazed even his staunchest admirers with the manner in which he brought down the curtain on his United career.

"For me that was the greatest bait," claimed Bosnich. "Wherever I was next season, in Italy or Spain, I couldn't have lived with myself if I knew I had turned down the challenge of following Peter Schmeichel."

There is also the damage to public relations which Bosnich's difficult departure from Villa Park created. Relations with the club, and their manager John Gregory in particular, reached a nadir when Bosnich pulled out of Villa's visit to Old Trafford last month amid claims he was concerned about compromising any future employment.

"I can handle pretty much anything," said Bosnich. "I understand the football business, how it runs, and that at times it can be quite a dirty business. However, the one thing I've never had levelled at me throughout my career was a challenge to my integrity.

"It was very difficult to sit back and 'shush' but that is what I had to do. Now I want to put the record straight. If it was just about money I wouldn't be here today, I would be in the Bahamas or the South of France having signed for a foreign team a long time ago.

"The day before the United game all I asked for was what Gareth Southgate and Dion Dublin received - another 24 hours to prove my fitness.

"That wasn't forthcoming and I was told point blank to declare myself fit or not play. I told them I couldn't have played that day but maybe could with another 24 hours."

Well it possibly could be to increase his wages as he is now the well established 1st choice keeper there. Also possibly to increase his Buyout clause.. However if he does sign a new contract then that at the very least assures Athletico that DDG will remain for a season or maybe even 2.. In which case they can then take a decision on whether to keep/sell or possibly even loan out Asenjo again..

Which isn't necessarily a good thing since keepers usually don't peak until 30ish

At least one of the three won't be up to the job so a belt and braces approach would be a good idea. And after all we still have a gazillion pounds to spend.

IMO he definitely has the potential to be better..

If you compare a 20 year old Neuer to De Gea, its a fair comment. De Gea has a lot of experience for such a young keeper, while 1.5 years ago, Neuer wasnt even the number one in Germany. Neuer made a huge step forward in the last couple of years though

Also what convinces me even more is the fact that Spain have some good keepers behind the likes of Casillas, Reina, Valdes.. Yet Del Bosque picked DDG as his 4th choice (during the Pre-World matches) over the likes of Diego Lopes (Villareal keeper over whom everybody seemed to be wanking), Asenjo (whom he has over taken as number 1 at Atletico and thus forcing them to letting him go out on Loan this season) etc..

The only big question mark for me is how good a footballer is he? Nobody seems to have an opinion on that.. We have been totally spoilt by VDS and his great ability with the ball at either of his feet.. I would assume it would be quite an essential requirement for a keeper who is joining us.. Some have mentioned that he has good kicks on him (with either foot) but that doesn't really tell us much as to how calm and composed he is while the ball is at his feet.. Other than that the only downside to his game is that he has a lack of experience due to his young age.. But what's that saying? If your good enough your old enough..

Potential. Can we risk having a young keeper at the back for us? Its a massive gamble in my opinion, you can't get the goalkeeping position wrong, just look at Arsenal.

I'd go with my head on this matter and look for someone older and more experienced. Its about the right player at the right time. De Gea is the right player but at the wrong time.
