Checked everyone's beloved metric: PSxG - from yesterday's game.
Palace had 0.6 from their 3 shots on target- the stupid long range one, the fast but central close-range header, and the close-range instinctive finish. So another --0.4 for him.

Just going to repeat what I said about PSxG earlier:
It’s particularly odd given that it was a beloved statistic from his defenders during the first part of last season when the number was in his favour. Now it’s not in his favour (for the fourth season in the last five) and it’s being discredited. Funny that.

This is not 1993. In 2023 surely there are better ways of judging keepers than goals conceded & clean sheets
Yes of course, because keeping a clean sheet and stopping goals is not what winning games of football is all about is it, ffs.

I didn't learn of this number till I saw it being used against him, a season or two ago.

I'd like to see specifics about how yesterday's was 0.6 (or the previous Palace game was 1.3, or City away was only 3.1, or Villa away was only 1.5...) - till then I'm not going to trust this except in the broadest sense (+10 or -10 over a season, things like that).

It swings and roundabouts though and it's the same for all Goalkeepers. Sometimes they will pick up points for doing next to nothing sometimes they will lose points through no real fault of there own.

It's not perfect, But it does generally show when a GK is having a very good season with there shot stopping or when there having a poor season.

With De Gea being apparently the best shot stopper in the league(according to some) you would assume that he would generally comfortably out perform his PSGxG most seasons but the truth is he dosent. He doesn't do that badly either but to make up for his many flaws he really needs to comfortably outperform his PSGxG consistently and he dosent.

Nonono, if you can't provide a complicated spider diagram and stats to at least 4 decimal points then you don't understand football. Or something. Sigh.

I actually agree with you in terms of one off games and have only ever done the same in terms of looking at it as a statistic across a season, as I have with the majority of statistics I've posted relating to De Gea because there will always be games that are outliers, whereas across a season it averages out. And the fact is that in four of the past seasons (including this one, which to be fair is over half way through so not unreasonable to view) his PSxG has been negative, despite shot stopping being the only part of his game that is supposedly good enough.

Come on now seriously Liverpool have conceded more goals than us & had less clean sheets but anyone would happily trade Allison for DDG. De Gea is an average shot stopper and he is below average in absolutely everything else

feck off and feck Alison he's a fecking liability I've said it from the beginning yeah he pulled off a few worldies but he's shite and it is showing now.

When we were at our lowest de gea was still saving us points left right and centre that is what top keepers do, look at Alice right now, he may as well be throwing them in his own net

Not true. Liverpool fans say Allison has been their best player by far this season.

He's been their best player all season. Without him they'd be much worse off.

Must be gut wrenching for you every time DDG pulls off a worldie to save us points.

I am sorry but this is one of the most clueless things I have ever read on redcafe. Allison is doing everything peak De Gea did alongside doing stuff De Gea can’t even dream about

You people need to make your minds up! Just contradicting the DDG argument. So what is it going to be?

What argument? The one about whether or not a keeper who can do more than pull of the odd wonder save is better than one who does that but is gash at everything else?

Allison is doing everything peak DDG was doing and more, he's a better all round keeper, way better at everything.

I said it earlier, football and algebra don't go together!

Allison is another level to DDG in claiming crosses, sweeping and distribution. That is the truth. That’s what makes him a FAR better keeper.

You wouldnt know what a decent keepers butthole looked like even if he was tea bagging you.
If anyone wants to know what to buy Stack for his 13th birthday:

Yeah £150-200k. Pretty certain he will be replaced. Why would we limit our potential and keep him as number 1?
And if he agrees to the pay cut I'm certain we won't be replaced, there's no way United would pay that for a back-up golalkeeper and there's no way DDG would agree to be one

I agree that it's a hefty wage for a number two keeper. However, we could sign a number one and stick him on somewhere in the £150-200k a week ballpark too. With the new keeper's wage combined with a reduced wage for De Gea, it would work out at a similar figure to what De Gea alone is currently earning. If De Gea doesn't agree to be number 2, then he is free to leave. His choice.

Reading some of the posts in here reminds me of the days when I used to argue with people that CBs shouldn't just kick the ball into row z and should instead look to show composure and play themselves out of trouble.

The issue here imo is that many people have grown up with a concept of how football should be played. And a keeper or previously a CB was seen as pure defender.

But those idealogues (football visionaries) were in the minority at the time, and right now they've become mainstream, and the keeper who many have built up due to his shot stop ability (nothing special right now) is now under the microscope after already being dropped by the Spanish NT. And it's difficult to accept for some of you due to the attachment you've built up with him.

But we have to finally evolve as a football team, and move forward.

Allison is doing exactly that for Liverpool now, he is thriving in the chaos because he is an excellent shot stopper himself. Shows how horrifically bad Liverpool have been that there GK is putting in world class performances and there still floundering well down in mid table.

The difference though is Alisson is also an excellent sweeper, very commanding and a good distributer. Things De Gea definitely isn't.

All De Gea has got is his shot stopping if he's not paying behind chaos he looks very very average.

Guaita made a good save from Weghorst yesterday. If De Gea did the same save many here would be making out it was amazing and that he'd 'rescued us' again.

And when will we be signing a new keeper - in the summer?

Yeah £150-200k. Pretty certain he will be replaced. Why would we limit our potential and keep him as number 1?

1. We dont have unlimited funds.
2. There aren't many better who are available
3. We will spend our money on more pressing areas
4. He is negotiating a new contract, we wouldn't if we were to upgrade. Neither the club or him would agree to that, with his wages.
5. He seems trusted by the manager and is well respected in the group with a lot of experience.
6. ETH hasn't given any clues about replacing him. At all.

Does this mean he is the best in the world? No. But he is good enough and we will focus our money elsewhere.

1. We will hopefully have new owners. Therefore spending on a keeper will be achievable.
2. Disagree
3. It is a pressing area. Arguably the second or third biggest priority.
4. We are looking to extend his deal on reduced wages which will reflect his current value to the club.
5. Agreed that he is well respected and experienced. However, I believe the manager will want a goalkeeper with a much broader skill set.
6. True. Though why would he? What would that achieve?

You think if De Gea signs a new contacrt at 150-200K United are going to pay another keeper the same amount
Ideally. However, even if we signed a new keeper and put him on £250k a week and De Gea £200k, that would still be less than what we are currently paying De Gea and Henderson.

True but those sort of silly deals won't get sanctioned now
