Can I get a tin foil hat too?

I don't think you need two.

Anyway, a Spanish correspondent has his name on the article and they don't even seem to know the difference between signing a contract and only agreeing on one. Maybe, something has been lost in the translation.

"David de Gea signed a contract extension with Manchester United only for the club to back out of the agreed proposal".

That doesn't make much sense.

Aye, that's what I don't get. Makes no sense to offer him a new contract and for him to sign it and then for the club to not sign it and back out weeks later. If he put pen to paper then it was a done deal.

I'd say it was verbally agreed, then they've decided based on performances etc and you'd have to think there was input from ETH that it's just better to save money and feck him off and bring in a new keeper.
Agreed. That headline is misleading and he can't possibly have signed the contract like they're reporting.

And as far as I'm concerned this is good news and my complaints since 2016 will now come to an end. I suppose that applies to you as well. The new keeper will obviously make mistakes (who doesn’t) but we will now have the opportunity to build a proactive attacking team at a time when the EPL is dominated by teams who implement positional play in a vertical axis starting with their GKs.

Shows we are running with abit more common sense. What foolish club gives DDG more than £120k a week.

Time for us to stop being stupid.
This kind of flip flopping definitely doesn't imply common sense, whether you want DDG gone or not. It screams a lack of forward planning and a certain disregard for its employees.

I think the extension was already agreed in numbers during the season already. De Gea signed the deal that was printed on the extension, but the club did not. Instead the club came back with another proposal. Nothing wrong in that, pure negotiation.

United doesn’t owe De Gea anything, they made him the best payed goalie in the world for four years. Making him earn bonkers wages. Give him a salute and wish him well.

Inter can probably add another €30m to the Onana price now. It would be hilarious if we failed to bring in a goalkeeper now and had to revert to Henderson.

What are you on about. They decide we want a new number 1 and that is the direction we are heading. Anything else is just noise. It’s not about wanting DDG or not… the fact being presented are we are buying a new number 1 keeper. Therefore why would we give him a first team contract if he’s not the first team keeper.

Why are we arguing against the facts presented. emotional decision gave us Ole and the current set up we have now.

Is it okay for me to say I dont care?

He is only still with us due to a technical glitch, we then heavily rewarded him for his “loyalty” by making him the best paid keeper in the world and one of the highest in the league.

If there was a deal on the table, that Sevilla performance alone would have been enough for me to take it off the table.

Yep. Even if we luck out in the end, it feels like we're making these decisions on a whim. So much for the theory of working with ddg to create the story of attempting and failing negotiations. We should have decided long before the cup final.

Whole thing is a shit show. We need to move on players better than this. So much indecisiveness, and it just all feels amateur hour reading about this, what happened with Rio in the past, etc

It might be something as simple as Eth wanted him as number 1, we offered him number 1 wages (drastic reduction, but probably still best paid in the league), then Eth had a change of mind (thus backup at best) and the revised offer.

I say simple, but that scenario makes Eth look bad if it required Sevilla, west ham games etc for him to change his mind.

What? Why would they raise the price did they think we was signing there €50m keeper to sit on the bench?

Go read a book and wise up.

Oh it's something I've wanted for a very long time too, yes to playing out bewteen the lines, but honestly it's mostly because I'm sick of him shouting away at ball dropping 2 yards from him. It's a sad end, but bigger and better players have left the club under bigger clouds.

Everybody is replaceable.

De Gea knows how it feels now for cutting Mendez out of his 375k contract that was agreed.
I remember reading about this, wasn't it a case where ddg had his demands met, but mendez was holding it up with asking for more clauses etc, ddg found out and thus sacked him and signed the contract the next day?

Don't blame them, his form towards the end of the season was abysmal. Probably decided after the shambles in Sevilla.

Time this club stopped reward mediocrity.
None of this is news though. We've known that's his level. We've known he crumbles under pressure and tends to finish seasons very poorly.

Why was the contract on the table in the first place?

If it has gone down as suggested, it's quite poor.

The club shouldn't be treating long-term or top quality servants like this, especially whilst being relatively average and unsuccessful.

As much as I'm done with De Gea, the matter can be dealt with with grace and dignity.

Oh totally agree, the club is incompetent. The only thing I'd say though he was even worse than usual towards the end of the season. Sevilla away, WHU, Cup final against City.

I guess we were set on getting a new no. 1, so we rescinded the offer to De Gea and changed the proposed role. Maybe as a backup GK.

I get it, but it's still not very classy, treating your long serving GK that way. It should have been made clear where we want to go before offering the initial extension offer. Dave might have even gotten a proper farewell.

I can't think of any single one. But certainly if they going to spend that much on a GK it's not going to be on DDG.

Those wages were ridiculous 4 years ago and are ridiculous today. I don't think De Gea is even looking at 200K per week at this point. I'm guessing he's being offered around 150K which is way more that he'd get anywhere else.

Let's pretend we don't sign him, where do you imagine he'll end up playing? Can you imagine him on any of the top 6? Or the top clubs in Spain, Germany or Italy? I think he'll had to settle for mid table and then 100K start looking damn good as no medium team will pay more than that for a GK.

Could possibly have taken Oblak's path and be on 350 at Atletico had he continued there, but outside that I think he'd have been in the 100-150 range at most.

Ten Hag's mistake is that he thought he could change De Gea's as a keeper. He got him to sweep much more last season but sweeping wasn't his only flaw and the improvement wasn't that big.

I agree that Ten Hag should've realized before he needed a new number 1. He probably didn't expect that De Gea would let him down like that in those games you mentioned. We also don't know how much he's hampered by the club here and the budget.

Completely agree. I was sick and tired of the situation as well and couldn't see how we were going to progress until we brought in a head coach with a defined way of playing the game. And then when that coach was brought to the club, I said on here that De Gea was in big trouble now. It took a season, but ten Hag realised pretty quickly at the back end of the season.

Everyone is absolutely replaceable and it would've been nice to see things end on a better note. But I'm not going to blame the people who have inherited the problems from the past under the ownership of the Glazers when it's been widely reported about budgets not being set in stone. I'm actually happy we're looking to progress post Woodward and Judge.

I can well believe this. Part of me thinks that Ten Hag thought he might be able to get away with De Gea for another year and then the last two months have turned that on its head. Foolish from the outset? Perhaps, but better late than never.
I think ten Hag always wanted a new number 1. It's just a case of the football department and the money men being on a different page.

Long term, I agree. I’m sure he’d rather be spending money elsewhere, though, with a view to making that change further down the line. The goalkeeper spot is just such a problem that it can’t - or at least shouldn’t - be ignored.

For me, goalkeeper is number one priority at this point. I do agree that the suits will just look at De Gea think: yeah, fine.

His ending with the club deserved to be handled with more respect. We need a new goalkeeper obviously but this has been another terrible handling by the club hierarchy.
Pretty difficult to tell a player we no longer want you nicely though. About time we got tough, we aren't a retirement home, even though we housed Phil Jones.

Ten Hag probably feels as if he shouldn't have to compromise on certain positions. In his mind, he should be allowed to sign a top striker, midfielder and a keeper. I imagine this is quite different from the reality. He must be sick to death of the takeover shenanigans.

Am I allowed to call BS on this ‘exclusive’??

I fail to believe that all parties are not present together when these things are signed. Surely for something this big, we don’t send them out and have them signed individually with one party signing the document after the other, possibly not even on the same day.

Could this be DDG and his camp leaking something to make the club look bad when he signs for someone else but can claim that he really wanted to stay?

It's high time the club started being ruthless when it comes to getting rid of players. No issue with this whatsoever. Overall it seems like they thought they could persist with him for a bit longer then as the season went on ETH realized that persisting with DDG is far more unsustainable than he thought and pulled the plug, which again I agree with.

The man had absolutely no issue with leaving the club to go to Real Madrid and would not have been here if not for the fax machine antics. I am sure there was a lot of hard balling from their end to make him the highest paid keeper in the world. Just as he looks out for his best interests, so too should the club.

Pin this comment. The only one that is spot on.

It’s nice to potentially know he’s going or atleast nolonger number 1.

With that ETH article, I think he has been offered a new deal largely agreed upon by upper management, agreed to it, then ETH has went further and said he wasn't comfortable continuing with DDG in a role unless he was the established number 2. The problem has been being offered the new deal in the first place. Not a good look all round regardless.

I am sure they have something written on a term sheet for Onana before making this decision on DDG.
