First time I’ve ever said this about De Gea but he’s been poor by his standards this season. The general consensus, which I agree with, is that he is bad at commanding his box. And his sudden tendency for flappy punches is worrying.
In many ways his goalkeeping style is becoming a little outdated. There is such an emphasis now on keepers who can play as auxiliary sweepers and are good with their feet. And it is certainly true that his distribution isn’t the best. It’s almost like how defenders these days are less valued on their actual defending, and more on their playmaling ability.
Lloris showed us yesterday though, that been great sweeping up off your line is all well and good. But if you can’t catch a simple header, you can cost your team the game.
I don’t think the De Gea wages are a result of the Sanchez deal. I think that’s an overblown effect. I think he wants 400k to stay because he’s spending his best years at a club where he is winning very little, and competing for 4th, year after year. If you want to keep one of the world’s best in his position, but you aren’t seriously challenging for the league or CL, you are eventually going to have to overpay for that loyalty.
