Was always going to be this way after we paid a lot of money for a young goalkeeper. He makes a mistake and the pitch forks are out

Szczesny has let in 16 goals in 3 PL matches, and there's no mention of how badly he's playing, in fact, he's getting praised!

De Gea has kept 2 clean sheets, and only let in 3 goals in 4 PL matches, and every media man and his dog has absolutely hounded him.

No wonder Fergie hates the media so much.

Its because of the his cost. It would not be a story otherwise. I dunno why some of you are so upset by this.

He has been very shaky and made errors. He will improve but he has to shut the press up by performances.

I think Fergie has taken a poor stance by saying what he has in the media and for his interview after Wednesdays game.

He has now made the whole issue a bigger story

I doubt fergie give a feck what the media think about his comments, they will still give de gea more sticks regardless.

That's because he's playing well, if Almunia was in goal Arsenal would have conceded triple that.

He's made a few errors, but also made lots of good saves, and his distribution is excellent. Only his errors are talked about, and there's no mention when he has a good game, and when he plays well. Exaggeration to say he's been 'very' shaky.

The best example is how ESPN spent nearly the entire pre-match talk before the Bolton game laying into De Gea, saying how bad he is and how he was close to being dropped (even though there was absolutely nothing to suggest that) and then he had a really good game, and after the match there was no mention of him at all. Typical.

He can't shut the media up with performances because when he puts in a good performance it's ignored!

I don't consider 16 goals conceded in 3 games to be 'playing well' for a goalkeeper actually, any goalkeeper. I doubt very much if De Gea has ever let in that many goals.

It's over 5 goals conceded a game on average!

So you think if he went on a run of 5 games without an error the media would still focus on his early season jitters?

No they would not. They would move onto the next story. That is what they do.

Fergie has brought even more pressure on De Gea by his comments. Which I dont think was needed.

And yes he has been very shaky. He has only played 5 games and only against Bolton can you say he went error free.

I watched him loads last season and in the summer. I am convinced he will be outstanding for us, but he needs to go on a run of good games or the doubts will continue.

You dont understand football.

Peter Schmeichel once conceded 11 goals in 2 games.

3 goals in 4 games, 2 clean sheets out of 4 is not 'very shaky'. It's an exaggeration brought about by a media over-keen to slate the player and expose any supposed 'weakness' in our side.

"United have a weakness" sells papers, it's what the fans of all the other teams want to hear, makes them think they have a good chance, but it doesn't mean it's not an exaggeration when it is.

Like Fergie says, his distribution usually ends up with us making an attack into the opposition's box, no mention of that in the media though. No mention of his saves, his good play... I agree Fergie might have made this a bigger deal for De Gea than it needed to be but I still agree with him 100%.

We've seen this before with many United players.

Well, I'm comparing De Gea to other goalkeepers playing now, to show that he's getting unfair criticism compared to other goalkeepers letting in far more goals than him.

Our defence is much, much, much better than Arsenals, we wouldn't have conceded more than 2/3 extra goals if I'd been in goal this season.

I know our defence is much better, but still conceding 16 goals in 3 games a very good goalkeeper does not make.

Way too harsh on the Arsenal keeper. When judging a keeper's performance you have to consider which goals he could have done more to prevent. Looking at the standard of defending in front of him, i really don't think he could have done much more.

He has played well this season and is one of the few in the Arsenal rearguard who can hold his head up. Without him playing so well, Arsenal probably would have conceded another half a dozen at least.

He does when the players in front of him can't defend. No matter how good a keeper you are you will concede a very high amount of goals if the people in front of you can't even do the basics well.

Clean sheets against Spurs and Bolton. Saved pen against Arsenal. Great save this game.

But he conceded to Dzeko and Long. So he's clearly the worst goalkeeper to ever wear the United shirt.

His presence scared Torres so much he missed an open net. Clear intimidation from the werewolf.

I was actually a little disappointed with his distribution today - it's normally amazing but he shanked quite a few straight out this afternoon. Great performance all round from him though.

Wasn't it just the one at the beginning?

He had a few long ball passes straight to Nani. Was very good apart from that one pass out of bounds and the one that put Smalling under pressure.

So will Reina's mistake allowing Adebayor a goal be the talking point on the analysis shows this week? Or will it be that one cross that De Gea dropped and instantly grabbed again?

Some of his passes in the first half were pinpoint. Great that he only conceded the 1 - he looks more confident each game.

He is just growing into the role and becoming better. Some of his punches to the side will be saves at the end of the season.

He looked very confident today. I was pleased with how he handled himself, and he made a hand-full of good saves. Overall good performance from de Beard and nothing can be spun by the journalists following a performance like that.
