Jesus... that goal around the 1 minute mark is fantastic...controlled with the right and chipped with the left. Who scored it?

EDIT: Spain's own goal is comical really...I dunno if De Gea should've been that far off his line though, I've noticed that at times with United.

I'm pretty sure he's coming to claim the ball. Defender must hear the shout late and instead of leaving it for him flicks it back. Unfortunately over his head into the net.

de Gea quotes.

Well, I am improving. It is hard to land in a different country and learn the language. It seemed normal that the press criticized me.

When you do things wrong, even a couple of errors, the Press has the right to criticise

What happened is something normal. Now it is my power to change those negative reviews of the people

The club, the fans, facilities, atmosphere, everything is from another world

Seems like he knows the score and the challenege in front of him. I get the feeling he's mentally strong enough to get his mistakes ironed out sooner rather than later.

Fair enough, his comments. I said before, at the end of the season, the critisism will be gone. And good to here that he likes it at United and its surroundings

Like the fact that he understands the scope of the task at hand and is willing to fight it out. get the feeling he's at home with the pressure that comes with being the united no 1. mental strength imo is as important for a player at a club like united as his ability. this lad will be top notch once he settles. just get that self confident vibe about him

a certain ben foster wasnt at home with the concept of wanting to win every game iirc.

ESPN are using De Gea's inclusion as the main talking point. Good luck De Beard.

Yeah pretty solid so far today, his distribution is top class and it's good to see him save a few from long range today too.

Great game from him today. No mistakes, but some excellent distribution (including THAT ball). One thing that VDS did do a lot was just boot balls up to the strikers/wingers to invariably lose against the taller defenders, but De Gea rarely does that. Looks to play short quite a bit more and actually keep hold of the ball, building from the back.

I wonder if MaroonPondlife understands what we mean by excellent distribution yet...

Clean sheet. Check
No hairy moments. Check
Couple of decent saves. Check
Excellent distribution. Check

Hopefully the start of a fantastic season.

Hopefully his performance today will shut some of the doubters up. The lad is going to be world class.

Looked very composed today, some great handling, he was protected well by the defence for most of the crosses, but very nice to see him look so confident.

His passing is fantastic, no wonder he was dubbed 'Van De Gea' in Spain, lots of similarities to the great man especially with his distribution. Got a way to go yet, but today was much more positive and he played his part very well.

did not put a foot wrong today, however he was well protected - perhaps that's why jones and smalling are playing at rb rather than one of the twins....

The only thing about his passing is he hits a lot of diagonals to Nani who isn't the best in the air.

I found it funny ESPN spent the best part of 30 minutes criticizing him and yet not one mention of him at Full Time

He looked a real class act. There were a few minor unsure crosses but everything else was dealt with superbly. Handling the ball seemed all too easy for him out there and his distribution, for a keeper, is amongst the best i've seen at the club. More often that not he will find his targets and even create chances himself. When we put some more muscle mass on him i'm sure he'll be able to deal with tougher physical tests, no problem.

The media have been so quick to get on his back. Hope they give him his due praise now.. or most likely not.

Will his good performance be mentioned once in all the reports of the game?

No chance.

ESPN criticised him for ages before the game... after the game (and a great performance) they didn't mention him once. Idiots.

I love de Dea's distribution. Its like hes obsessed with having a 90% + successive pass rate. Every ball that leaves is feet or hands has a purpose.

He may have had a shaky start, but his distribution is IMO better that VDS.

Very good game today, but could have helped out the defense more with some balls that fell in the box

.

I noticed that aswell, Fecking stupid. At least have the balls to say 'We were criticising him before the game but he put in a great performance' or something to that effect.

Instead it was more of a 'make stupid statements' -> 'look silly' -> 'pretend it didn't happen'

I liked the punch best from that corner in the first half, the save was good, but seemed routine

Already feeling less nervous when shots are fired at him, my heart always skipped a bit with VDS, but has been worse with De Gea...but it's getting better and better, he's looking a lot more confident and assured in the role as each game passes
