I still can't get over that punch, some keepers can't throw that long!

This was a good one.

Sport splashed on their front page a De Gea quote in response to a question from a Sport reporter about potentially signing for Barcelona "Nunca se sabe" which is basically 'You never know'

Probably a response to the Iniesta rumours but will get some traction back in the UK I imagine

Saw Messi, asked him if he wanted to join Manchester United. Said he'd love to be Ashley Young's understudy.

He'll have to battle with Bebe for that role...;)

Have a read of Inside United where he gets excited that he's not far off making his 100th appearance for us and talks about maybe beating Stepney's record. He says he wants to stay and reach more and more milestones.

Not suggesting that he will never leave, nobody can guarantee that, but he says he's very happy here and is in a good moment in his career. He loves the fact that the fans were behind him and were singing his name even when the media were on his back.

As much as I love de Gea, he was denying he was joining United right up until it happened.

What does that have to do with his future?

I think Barca are the only ones who can realistically take him off our hands. Atletico aren't going to have the funds to buy him back and he won't sign for Real. Truth is his girlfriend divides time between Barca and Madrid, he knows a lot of the players through the U21's, and it's a chance to return to his home country and play for a club of an equal stature of us. I'm not going to be foolish enough to think that he would turn down Barca, truth is, in all likelyhood he wouldn't. Thankfully it seems Ter Stegen or Reina might be their choice to replace Valdes, and I'll be praying they settle so that Barca don't go after him.

While he may not turn down Barcelona, I doubt that Barcelona will be able to agree the kind of price we'll want for him, specially when there are much cheaper alternatives available. And I'm sure that he'll not push for a move.

I can remember him joking about his own testimonial being only 8 years away, around when Rio was having his. If he does actually get that far, I'd be over the moon. Madrid/Barca will inevitably come knocking at some point.

Would he even go to Madrid? Did you mean Real or Atletico?

Fixed.

In what sense are Barca of a greater stature of us? We have more international fans, will be recieving a record breaking kit deal and are valued higher by Forbes. Barca have had an extremely successful past 8 years, but historically, there isn't that much in it.

Agreed. Greater stature doesn't just mean "trophies won", and even on that scale, we haven't done too bad ourselves, have we!

Exactly. On the field Barca might have 4 European Cups, but they didn't win their first till 1991, and their last 3 have only come in the past 8 years. Not saying they weren't huge before that, teams with Kubala, Maradonna and the like can't be scoffed at. But their global success is only recent.

Yeah, let's just leave it at your initial remark - clubs of equal stature! ;) Before someone comes in and starts debating history again etc. Barca's always been a club I admired. Even through their barren years, being largely overshadowed by Madrid.

I think they are higher on the food chain than us though, and the holy grail for the best players. We obviously want very good players in our team, but over the years, whenever one has threatened to be really good, I have always heard people speaking of an inevitability that they will end up at Barca/Madrid one day.

During the whole Januzaj contract situation, there was a clear undertone that said he should stay with us now because we will give him games, and then he can go to Real/Barca later in his career if he becomes the best player in the world. And this is without a particularly strong link to Real/Barca in the press, more an acceptance that if he becomes of a certain level, they'll take him from us.

I don't think many of our fans see us as the 'ceiling' for a top player now. That is Spain. No other teams would have the audacity to try and sign a Real/Barca player who they seemingly still need, wheras while it is not a huge concern, there is still a fear with us.

Climate is one reason, us not being able to compete with their finances is another.

And a third would probably be language/culture. Many of the very best players are Spanish (or Portuguese in the case of Ronaldo), or come from South America. Spain is likely more homely to them (or their wives/girlfriends) than England.

True.

Spanish football expert Graham Hunter on David De Gea's national status:
There is no question that David De Gea has developed during his time at Manchester United.
For quite some time, whenever David has come back to Spain to represent the Under-21s, people within the Spanish Football Federation have been pretty stunned. I think they see all of the maturity that they expected him to get as a man, but also physical differences. They see a huge degree of extra confidence.
In Spain, the national team has a role in developing young players which doesn't exist in Britain. They spend time at the national training centre from the age of 15 and are trained there even when there aren't games. Therefore the Federation feels a great deal more involvement and pride in the players, and I can tell you that they are all immensely excited about the change in him - the football development and also the personal development.

I think David will know this already, but it will be difficult for him to be involved in next summer's World Cup. If Spain's three established, experienced goalkeepers - Iker Casillas, Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina - aren't injured and aren't in horrendous form, they're going to Brazil. If one drops outs, Diego Lopez - who is keeping Casillas out of the Real Madrid team - would probably then come in. So De Gea would need at least two players to move out of his way if he's going to be at the World Cup.

That said, it is explicit among football people in Spain that when the World Cup is over and there are significant changes - whoever decides to stay, whoever decides to go - there is a mood that Spain must not miss David De Gea's moment, that he must be promoted. There is a high enough regard for David that if Casillas says he's retiring, then it's not automatically the next man's turn. There's a lobby that says De Gea is then promoted and those who want to stay and fight him for the number one spot can do that. So he's well-placed.

Casillas and Valdez I can understand as they play for the 2 biggest spanish clubs, but Reina? take a hike...

The 3rd keeper never plays, so Reina is kept because he's a popular figure in the dressing room and is there more for morale than anything else.

Valdez is in brilliant form for Barca, and Reina is in great form for Napoli. The misfit there is Casillas.

Apparently Spain have a very hierarchical system in which older players will get valued well ahead of younger talents. While I'd be disappointed if De Gea didn't go to the World Cup, it'd be easy to see why they've done it. But with all of them in early 30's then they should be looking to give De Gea at least bench preparation in the next World Cup, in my opinion.

If every country's NT had as much scrutiny as La Roja who are currently enjoying a phenomenally successful era, football would be decidedly uninteresting due to the malignant stench of incessant criticism....La Roja have an excellent working system, get over your De Gea bias- his time will come

And its Valdés

Surprised at both numbers for two different reasons. A bit surprised that DDG is just getting to that and surprised that Smalling is actually near that

He played a lot of games in his first season here. After that, he was in and out with injury/rotation.

That is true, it's easy to forget. Still cannot believe it's a century!

With De Gea, I hope he is here to stay. He's easily my favourite player at the club right now, and he really does have everything. Above the outstanding athleticism & talent is a steely, unbreakable toughness that is the single reason he wasn't back on a flight to Spain in the summer of 2012. He's remarkably strong mentally, & he has the potential to be our greatest ever goalkeeper (steady on now, I know I know). It's a little ridiculous to some, considering Schmeichel is often considered the best keeper of all time (or at least, in England), but if anyone can do it, surely it is him. Here's hoping he never signs for Barca - he'd really be the biggest loss. It's still so easy to forget how panicked we were in 2011, expecting another decade of rubbish goalkeeping until we find ourselves a solution - he has made the transition so seamlessly.
