David de Gea | 2011-14 Performances

There's nothing slow about it. He waits at the near post in case of deflection from the two centre backs, shuffles over to the centre of the goal and had Bendnter made contact De Gea is travelling in the right direction and would be able to dive for the ball.

Really? He's definitely slow to react. I just thought it was funny.

I'd say in terms of performances, Neuer has been better in fairness over the past couple of years, in fact probably some of the best on average out of the top class keepers. But I would say that he has made more errors than de Gea has over the past year or so, be it a lapse of concentration or misjudging a shot. And that is a huge testament to de Gea's ability not to let his first season downfalls bring down his confidence, and he has now ironed out almost all weaknesses he had when he first came here: his long range shot stopping was quite shaky, his punches were quite poor due to his lanky, weak frame, susceptible to knocking easy balls back into the paths of nearby strikers, and his command of his area was extremely poor due to not speaking English well. Or perhaps being young and telling two of the best CBs of the EPL era what to do wasn't exactly the easiest of tasks, as well as being new to one of the biggest clubs in the world, I reckon that was an important factor too. Pretty much all of these weaknesses have been turned into strengths now. I mean, how many long range efforts has he let in now? They rarely try them anymore, and if they do he does extremely well to stop them, almost never fumbling them.

If we just had two firm starting CBs week in week out, who not only worked well together but had effective communications with de Gea, we would be racking up the clean sheets in the easy games. I still feel there can be slight issues with communications between our CBs and GK, as was shown on sunday when Evans left a ball for de Gea, when he thought he was going to be passed the ball, and in the end made an awkward kick out which resulted in Le Arse applying more unnecessary pressure. Get rid of these sort of mistakes and we could be witnessing something special at the back for the next 15 years, let alone the present.

I'm not entirely sure what your point is here; are you saying that because, as a team, we're not doing as well as we might hope, that we're not supposed to lay praise on individual players?

The fact is that there are plenty of people who think our keeper is the best in the league, and it's hardly unusual for conversations to take place as to where a player falls in the legion of players in the world in his position, so talk of him being 'top 3' or 'top 5' or whatever in the world isn't exactly strange or bad either.

What does RAWK have to do with anything? 'RAWKish' seems to have become almost a 'fits all situations' dig at fan behaviour someone doesn't like.

I don't think many, if any, people who are discussing how good DDG is are doing so to 'comfort' themselves because Liverpool are ahead of us in the league. I also don't think many, if any, expect that to be the case at the end of the season. They are simply enjoying the rise and fantastic form of a young United goalkeeper who took a lot of undeserved shit in his first few years with us.

I'm not saying that at all. I wrote it as it came to me, so it's a bit of a flood of thought.

The rawkish comparison is that Liverpool have been sinking for years and even in their seasons most shit, they still clung to 'best gk', 'best fans' etc. I don't know, maybe that's what fallen giants do. I've been a United fan for over 30 years and just lived in hope of winning the league throughout the 80s. I didn't examine the team and say, well that player is the best in the world, United have a great history etc, what I looked at, was the league table and how far Liverpool were ahead of us.

I am certainly putting him down and posters on Redcafe are not going to influence the mental fortitude of the United squad, but if you were to take a sample of Redcafe posters and extrapolate that to your average United fan and onto a group of players involved in the United set-up, would you be happy if they were focussed on who was #1 in which position?

I'm not explaining myself well and it feels like it's becoming more irrelevant as United appear to be turning a corner. I am not putting anyone down but the bigger picture must be kept in focus and that means the league.

Time to recognize his maturity and make him one of the best paid keepers in the world At his rate of development he could go down as one of the all time greats.

Would not swap him for any keeper in the world. He's only just turned 23, I cannot imagine what he's going to be like in about 5 years time.

I'd be delighted even if he just stays at the level he is now. What he needs to do is to keep performing like he is doing currently over a longer period of time and he will be counted as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, if he is not already.

You fecked up the chain of smileys mate but yea, that flying punch gives a hint that David's going to improve his punching during corners/crosses even more.

Luckily i did...it was getting out of hand

Agree, not just on last week's performance but i get the impression he is punching more but still think he needs to be a bit more decisive in similar situations.

Neuer is better than De Gea at the moment.

But De Gea will be the better than Neuer in next years.

I haven't see loads of Neuer, but he reminds me of Hart, everyone bangs on about him, yet every time I seem to watch him, he always has some amazing fecking brainfart.

Also, Jones

David De Gea believes that his shaky start to his Manchester United career has helped him become a better player.
The former Atletico Madrid man faced widespread criticism after a string of poor performances, but has since established himself as one of the Premier League's top goalkeepers.
De Gea is now confident he can challenge Alex Stepney's record of 433 appearances by a United keeper.
"They were difficult times. It was hard for me," he told The Sun.
"It wasn't easy hearing criticism but I tried to use it to motivate me and make stronger.
"I like to think that from bad things you can derive good results."
The Spanish U21 international has admitted that he found it difficult to move away from Madrid and that he felt the weight of expectation following his £17.8m move to the Red Devils.
"I was very young. I had arrived at a new club from another country, I was learning a whole new language, I was adapting to a new style of football and new team-mates," he said.
"That's a lot to take in and I think it's natural that it will take a little bit of time to settle."

Amazing player, someone else said this but basically he has redefined what I expect to be saved from a goalkeeper, I always think De Gea would have got that.

Jones

Only 433 appearances for a United goalkeeper? I expected more than that. De Gea is already on 97, so he could make that record I reckon by the time he reaches 30 should he stay on. We wouldn't even dream of buying a player to push him down the pecking order so he is more than capable of staying on and becoming a UNited goalkeeping legend. The only way for this boy is up, and is one of the most exciting players we have at our club in terms of promise.

I fecking love Dave.

If he finishes he's career here he will eclipse Schmikes, for me. He's that good.
