Might be too early to say, but he reminds me of Gordon Banks. Similar build, and similar presence in the box. He's made some saves too that the great man would have been proud of. That save at Sunderland was one of the best I've ever seen from a keeper for many a year.

He hasn't done much wrong this season, has he? Compared to pretty much everyone he has been absolutely brilliant, in fact. To borrow a phrase from a certain man, he has looked like a top, top player - unlike his largely under-performing team mates.

Still not quite there in the area - but that's nitpicking, really. He's the least of my worries, to put it like that.

Always been a big backer of De Gea but he is now really proving to be worth every penny. It was a lot of money but he is top, top class.

He's brilliant, played superbly all season and still only 22. Really hope he gets a new deal before the summer.

He kept us in the game. He's 22 and already one of the best in the world imo, the sky's the limit for him. He's become one of them players that you just don't worry about and at the age of 22 says a lot with him being a goalkeeper and all.

He has some super hero reflexes. He was brilliant today I don't blame him for that free kick because it was class also. With how weak our defense was he did good keeping it at only 2 goals.

By his own standards, he should be saving that free kick.

Saved our skin though, definitely one of our best players.

great freekick but de gea has set himself like he is pretty much unbeatable from distance these days that it was a surprise he fails to keep the ball out of the net on that occasion. like the poster above i tend to agree that de gea will be dissapointed with himself for not saving that freekick but that was a great hit. anyway he is turning out to be our best player so far this season and has been one of the best since last year. just hoping that vidic will retun soon and sort out the defense and de gea can started collecting his clean sheets again.

great save to deny the first shot in the lead up with the first goal. I'm a little disappointed that he couldn't keep out the free kick, it looked like he was going to get to it, but just couldn't. Though can't fault him for it as it was taken very well, and it is only my expectations and watching him get finger tip saves countless times in the pass that create that thought.

What a different a season makes this time last year the journalists on sunday supplement mocking us for having a dodgy GK compared to the worlds best in Joe Hart at city! Who's laughing now?

The free kick was a strange one.It was flat and pacey and never really dipped making a save possible.David is largely responsible for the three points against Sunderland and now Stoke and countless last season and we are very lucky to have him. That save before we equalized was like wtf!!

Don't agree with this at all. The ball hit the bar in a way that made it nearly impossible to save, even if he were to have positioned himself a yard or so to his right. Not De Gea's fault.

never said it was his fault.

just saying he is so good these days you never expect him to let in a goal from way out.

Camped so deep a lot of the time. It's pretty sad to see sometimes. I think 'you need to get out to that' or 'come for it!' but I know most of the time if he fecks up the response will be 'oh back to his old flappy self again'. He was desperately unlucky for the first goal because that was a fecking amazing save point blank.

Next summer's WC will probably be Casillas' last as an automatic starter for Spain. I fully expect De Gea to take over from him after that, if not before.

Aye - could be before if Ancelotti keeps benching Iker. Will be interesting to see who starts for Spain in Brazil.

Extremely unlikely

Casillas, until he announces his NT retirement, will continue to get called up. Valdés & Reina are still in the mix and highly improbable that Del Bosque will opt for a younger & more inexperienced option at such a vital position for La Roja. I think we'll finally see De Gea get call ups with the senior squad but he'll be low in the pecking order and it will take time to displace the others

You lot should be happy about that, at least in the shorter term, means less chance of injury or long periods away from club responsibilities

Do you think Valdés will be first choice in Brazil if Iker remains on the bench for Real? Bit of a conundrum for Del Bosque.

Right now, I think it's definitely Victor over Iker but Del Bosque has a lot of trust in Casillas. We'll see how RM's season progresses but I expect Iker to be back as the starter soon enough

I think Del Bosque values squad chemistry too highly to risk a change now. Valdes and Reina have been loyal and reliable when called on. Valdes, in particular, has always deferred to Casillas as the starter, even when the footballing case hasn't been there.

If he'd wanted De Gea as a replacement for Reina, getting used to the squad, he'd have already used him. Barring major surprises/injuries I don't see even that change happening in time for Brazil. Afterwards I reckon at least two of the current keepers will drop out of the squad.

I have to say that I agree. Spain NT looks from the outside to offer a lot of respect to their heirachy. Can't see them going with De Gea before Valdés or Reina.

It's a good thing he isn't involved at the moment, we don't have the barca boys planting ideas in his head about wanting to leave for them.

Love De Gea.. Best buy we have made in later years! We need to give him a lifetime contract right now.. Come on Ed get him signed up!..

I'd say on current form, de Gea is up there with the likes of Neuer, Courtois and Buffon (in no particular order). He has made no steps wrong this season, and the only debate people are making is that free kick, but like someone mentioned above it skimmed the post, an almost impossible save to make as it pretty much requires the keeper to run into the post to get!

Do people get the same feeling as me in that he makes little effort to make his saves? I mean that as in he makes his saves look so easy, taking a lot less effort than the average keeper to get to a ball? Incredible goalie, I've backed him ever since he arrived and stuck by him throughout every bad game he had, watching in disgust when posters like Kietotheworld (remember this tit?) couldn't see any future for this guy. Glad he shut everyone up

i really hope moyes didn't sack our scouting staff, as they have consistently identified future top players like De Gea, well before the likes of City, Chelsea, liverpool etc. Examples of our interest before others and kenyongate include: Chech, Drogba, Lampard, Silva, Rafael/Fabio, Pogba, Januzaj, Ravel Morrison, Evans, Essien, Ramsey, Hernandez, plus many more, we didn't get them all due to Kenyon's shenanigans and crazy bids from others,

Update: Moyes on the case to reform our scouting, hope he doesn't mess it up:

David Moyes set to shake up Manchester United scouting system after botched transfer window

9 Sep 2013 22:30

United boss plans to bring in new scouts after missing out on several targets during first summer in charge at Old Trafford

Manchester United boss David Moyes is ready to make a massive shake-up of his scouting system - after being stung by criticism. United chief Moyes has been carrying out a review of how United find stars after a faltering first window in charge at Old Trafford. And the new Reds chief plans to bring in his own men, tried and trusted talent-spotters, as he overhauls his team. United took ferocious stick for only landing Everton old boy Marouane Fellaini in the window, with poor intelligence on other targets. Moyes wants staff who do not just spot players but know exactly what their chances are of signing them.

The United boss was on the trail of Thiago Alcantara when he was leaving Barcelona but Mirror Sport can reveal the main snag was doubt about his transfer fee.
Midfielder Alcantara had a fixed price in his contract but United had conflicting reports on the cost.
United sent chief scout Jim Lawlor to Spain to meet the Alcantara family. The Irishman was also involved in the failed bid to sign Cesc Fabregas.
And Moyes was further embarrassed by the Ander Herrera fiasco and the failed late moves for Fabio Coentrao, Mezut Ozil and Sami Khedira.

New chief executive Ed Woodward infamously flew home from United's pre-season tour on transfer business but kept missing targets. Rather than bring in a director of football - a decision that would undermine Woodward - Moyes wants better and or effective scouts.

Lloris is impressing me that most in the league at the moment. But his defence aren't playing as bad as De Gea's.

The save before Stoke's first this Saturday was decent...absolutely no excuse for it ending up off Crouch's foot.

He's looking like a much bigger, imposing figure now. Week by week he's making more ridiculous saves and you can tell he's got some confidence in himself. His distribution is one of his best points for me though, very good with his feet.

He'll have many opportunities to play at a variety of clubs over the coming years and you hope that he's given the assurances and rewards to stay here as long as possible because in the long term, we couldn't have got a better replacement for VDS.

yes after the post Schmikes struggle, we seem to have well researched VDS replacement: DeGea, brilliant player almost always finds a team mate from his kicks

Morrison was with us from the age of about 9 so cant really be included and Evans was in our centre of excellence in Northern Ireland from a young age as well

but you get the drift, we have unearthed many gems

Am I allowed to say that his distribution(kicking) was bit poor today? Had a good game though, was very good on crosses.
