Another very composed and assured performance from him. Couple of great stops and thought his kicking in particular (bar one scuff) was very secure on our dodgy pitch as it has been in general recently. Long may the de Gea bandwagon roll on!

Is it just me or has he started holding on to more shots recently? He held a couple in Madrid and had one very good catch today as well.

Noticed this too and I think he's got specific instructions not to parry it into the path of strikers as far as possible because he's certainly cut down on that.

It's a pretty weird thing to have to instruct him to do though

I dont think so I think hes always been good at holding on to shots and especially shots that wouldn't be held by most keepers, it was one of the first things I noticed with him when he first joined. I just think people are paying more attention to that part of his game now cos he recently let in a couple with shots parried out into the paths of opposition players. But nothing new for me.

This had me in stitches. Messi vs. de Gea.

Is anyone else terrified of how real that looks when you just glance at it?

Just watching the season review for the 98/99 season and when we lost 3-0 at Highbury, all of the goals are arguably Schmeichel's fault. De Gea hasn't even made that many mistakes this season. I hope he keeps a clean sheet at QPR, if must be so frustrating for him conceding the odd goal every other game.

My hunch is that De Gea isn't bothered in the least, provided we win the game. The oddball goal is simply inevitable. Sometimes the ball bounces oh so perfectly and there's nothing you can do about it. At least that's my rationalization.

He actually made loads of mistakes in the first half of that season and people forget because of the way he finished it and think he was great, remember the howler at the end of Munich away in the last minutes to make it 2-2 in the CL group stage? if De Gea done that tonight the Caf would be in meltdown.

Most of the shots he's parried are shots he couldn't have held onto. The one against Chelsea or whoever was a fingertip parry. It's not like he just didn't feel like holding onto it.

Schmeichel was appalling the first half of the season (in which he announced his retirement) until he was ordered by Fergie to go for a 2-week break. He came back a changed man and the rest as they say is history.

No problem with his shot stopping. I just wish Vidic and co didn't have to make so many headers inside their own six yard box. Nerve racking for me

He had a couple of great catches. I remember a video from training when he came to us he made one superb save where he caught it. It's probably down to confidence, he's full of it right now.

If he practises on taking on hundreds of free kicks, in swinging and out swinging corners every week and gets the balance right between muscle and agility this kid can be the worlds best one day

I'd say Manuel Neuer is the benchmark these days

He's doing well, but I must say he should be going to more crosses, dead ball ones anyway. There were at least a couple of times in the first half that balls were crossed to the edge of the six yard box and because he's not going for them it puts huge pressure on the defence to get to it first, because if Reading do, it's almost certainly a goal.

Not only that but when he first signed for us he has weak as feck on crosses, I remember one game against Wimbledon where they did nothing but throw cross after cross at him and he looked dodgy as feck :lol:

This. Decent performance on the whole but there was 2 or 3 set pieces that came into the 6 yard box that he didn't deal with. 1 of which actually bounced inside the 6 yard box near the back post.

It'll come though as he matures physically. However, had Vidic not been playing we'd have been in trouble IMO.

Neuer looked incredibly dodgy a few years ago. It was clear he'd turn into a quality keeper, it just required patience.

For the next international break, Del Bosque will probably be able to call up De Gea without dropping anyone as Iker Casillas is likely to still be out or have just returned from injury.

At a commercial event in Spain this week, the national manager was asked about calling new players up and said "There's a Manchester United player we'll call soon."

Yeah, matter of time before he got into the squad to be honest. Insane to think it'll be a few more years before he's number one...
Wonder if there's much chance of Reina being completely dropped from the panel for him, Reina does seem a popular character.

He still looks dodgy on crosses. If he was playing in England, he'd be considered inferior to Reina, Begovic and Hart. Most probably

It's still Buffon, he's doing a Van Der Sar and quietly getting on with being absolutely fecking incredible without drawing any attention to himself because he's getting a bit older.

Yeah, I agree, Buffon is still the best out there for me. Then there's quite a few that can be considered in the top bracket, all having certain flaws and certain strengths.

Why does the Manchester Evening News bang on non-stop about United being interested in Begovic. It's like they are trying to destabilise DDG.
Is Begovic really someone to bring in?
I really hope that United continue to guide and mentor DDG (as SAF APPEARS to be doing) rather than adding doubt in his mind by buying in another goalkeeper.
Lindegaard is perfectly adequate as a backup. I just think the goalkeeper position is not really one where you play off one against another for the sake of competition.

I think SAF and Eric Steele are doing a great job with nurturing De Gea, I have no worries there. I think it was Steele who gave an interview after the Real away leg about how focused De Gea is, that he isn't annoyed by what's going on in the press, doesn't take notice of it... And he was glowing with compliments.

I hope so. When I read anything by Stuart Mathieson in the Manchester Evening News I always wonder why he bothers. He never writes anything that we as fans don't already know about, and his questions at press conferences are bland and lack any kind of incisiveness. Clearly, he isn'r particularly impressed by DDG.
