Loved when Peter Schmeichel, our greatest ever goalkeeper and one of the best of all time, said he admired David de Gea because he hasn't let all this unfair criticism affect him. Could tell he was being genuine as well.

Takes a lot of mental strength for a young man to deal with that level of scrutiny without being a complete jackass.

On that note, are there are caftards who saw Schmikes at 22? I wonder how the 22 year old De Gea compares to the 22 year old Schmeichel.

I think I read a article last season that said at the same age he was playing in the Danish second division and VDS was in the Ajax reserves. So pretty safe to say they was both behind where he is at now.

Would love to see a compilation of his best saves in his Utd career. I always remember a save from a Stoke full back (Wilkinson?) that was absolutely incredible.

One of the SpanishTV shows spoke to him as United left the hotel the morning after the match.

"Cristiano scored a golazo - there was nothing I could do about it."

"A draw in the Bernabeu is a good result."

Asked about interest from Barcelona.
"I'm in Manchester. I have a contract with them - it's my club."

Interesting how a player who pundits have been randomly criticizing would be the target of one of the greatest sides in the history of club football.

You've seen fantastic performances from both Foster and Howard. Foster specifically is a player that let pressure get to him. Can't handle being the England goalie either.

Still don't understand this criticism that he uses his feet too much :wenger: Why the feck would one care about the body part used to stop the ball ? Using your feet is hardly something a sign of luck, it's a great reflex

I don't get it either, especially when he has to use his feet or concede. Well, I know what I'd rather he do, just let it roll in, then shout a lot and run into people and knock them down at corners. Be the traditional English keeper.

Thing is, he never was made villain except by some idiot pundits (and some ignorant caftards). The majority always knew he was talented and pretty good already

I think the point about the one the other night is that he could just as easily have used his hand, the ball was quite high up. There's nothing wrong with using your feet when you have to, but obviously the hand is better if possible... I mean, that's why it's considered an advantage for goalies to be allowed to use their hands...

Over time, the more of those he does the more chance of it skewing off his shin into the net, compared to if he used his hands.

I think the fact that he was running across his goal and then had to anticipate the ball coming back the other way makes it less conclusive that using his hands would have been the better choice. It's also true that if he used his hands he might not have got the distance on the rebound which cleared the danger. All conjecture, to be fair.

It's almost annoying me that all the media are now showering him with praise when just a week ago the same ones were criticizing him  The only part that actually really bugs me is how they're all saying 'the media were harsh with him, but...' as if each one hadn't contributed in that criticism.

But anyway, despite the hypocrisy, it's nice to read good things about the kid that are a reflection of what most of us on here already knew anyway.

the age comparisons with Smikes and VDS says it all. We have almost 20 years more of this lad keeping goal for us. he has a lot of time to build his reputation.

Fergie got it right.

Nah, he'll leave for Barca at some point.

Do people think he saved that shot with his legs just for shits and giggles? Just because it's unconventional people assume it's bad, or that bad things will happen if he continues to use the same instincts, which is illogical.

Or he could deflect it unto the path's of a striker if he uses his hand instead of his feet in certain occasions, I'm being pedantic on purpose there.

My point is that it doesn't matter how he makes saves as long as he makes them purposely. The decision he has to make is in his a split second so personally I don't care about the style as long as it's effective. It's another thing used to harshly criticize him

The thing is that you think he could have used his hands, it's your opinion Plech and not necessarily the truth.I trust him with his decision more than you on this instance, if he went with his legs it means that for him it was the best way to save it.

Nah, it was a somewhat bizarre save. If you can use your hands you should, especially when the ball's at waist height. You just have more control that way.

That's just not always the case though. You don't always have more control when you use your hands, especially when you're as good at shifting your feet as De Gea is.

You have more control, but it's not as quick as sticking your leg out.

It is when it's at waist-height!

I think he anticipated the ball to bounce lower and had already made his mind up to clear with his feet. If he knew it'd go that high I doubt he would have made that decision but it was too late since he'd already committed to using his feet.

It's one of those where if he got it wrong everyone would justifiably ask what the feck was he doing, but he got it away so his instincts worked out in this case. I would like to see him go with his hands next time!

It was an instinctive save. It came from quite a close distance, and he probably didn't have time to think if he should go with his hands or feet. He just reacted. Maybe he couldn't position his body fast enough to save with his hands. Maybe he was wrong footed. Either way, he's saved it and that's that.

He could of used his hands and pushed it round the post for a corner, or kick it 20 yards up the field like he did.

Personally think he chose the right choice.

Maybe someone should ask him to explain why he used his feet, I mean it's not like he's a Manchester United goaly or anything. He obviously knows why he done it and felt more comfortable doing so in that situation. Good on him too.

It's pretty evident that Spanish keepers use their feet to good effect, so I think there'll be a lot of people like Plech who will chalk saves like that up to fortune or something. It's just not as simple as Plech makes out ("It's at hand heigh = he should use his hands!!")

That's just the stupid critics who are trying to find a reason to put him down. They are running out of bad things to say about him and quickly. I love the way the management has dealt with this issue by protecting De Gea and he is quickly proving his worth too.

It's not just fortune, he saved it. It's just not the best technique for saving shots at that height and position, obviously - that's why you don't see keepers doing it very often. It's a low-percentage save, if he did that often then from time to time it would skid off into the goal. Much more often than if he used his hands.

there would be zero dispute about this if Hart or Reina had done it, everyone would just go "Well that was a bit weird" and that would be that.
