Fergie on @tSKeysandGray's comments re Neville/De Gea: "I am not getting into that at all. You have to listen to some idiots in the game."

Fergie's right - I think the pundits and all the Sports journo in Britain sat down and collectively decided to be harsh on De Gea. Paul Merson wants him ditched for Shay Given.....Jamie Redknapp compared him to Van Der Sar as if VDS never made costly mistakes when he was with us.

Statistics have showed De Gea is actually the 4th best performing goalie in Europe this season which makes him the best goalkeeper in the Premier League as of yet. It's even more painful when some of our fans join this criticism bandwagon......

A lot of sense from SAF on De Gea.

Sir Alex Ferguson has thrown his weight behind David De Gea and told the Manchester United goalkeeper to ignore any detractors in the press.

The Spaniard pulled off a string of superb saves during last weekend's 1-1 draw with Tottenham but was criticised following Clint Dempsey’s late equaliser at White Hart Lane, having only half-cleared Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s initial cross.

Since then, the media have had a field day, condemning the 22-year-old's burgeoning Old Trafford career while also linking him with transfers to Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Speaking to MUTV on Friday, Sir Alex dismissed such wild speculation and backed the youngster to handle the situation: "It has been over the top. It's always over the top when it comes to criticism here.

"The boy has got to brush it aside. Thirty seconds from time, he was a revelation according to most people. He was fantastic and made some fantastic saves. I'm not interested in discussing the criticism now because it's unfounded.

The boss also addressed the situation during his weekly press conference at Carrington, outlining his plan to support De Gea whilst lamenting the pitfalls of being a goalkeeper.

“It is better we deal with David De Gea rather than the press deal with him. I think we are quite good at that. He had a fantastic game and was 30 seconds away from that. I remember talking about how well he played and then 30 seconds from time the ball park changes.

“It is unfortunate for the lad but he has to deal with it. We will help him. Outfield players maybe make 20 mistakes in a game. But they are in a crucial position. We are okay with him."

Fantastic words from the boss. Even better that it's the truth.

But back to the stats above. Stats can lie, but they can also reveal the truth. The truth is that De Gea and Cech have been the two best keepers in the English prem this season and there's not much between the two of them. I couldn't really argue with anyone who'd give Cech the edge overall, but at the same time Cech just isn't in the same league as De Gea as a shot stopper.

We'd be crazy to swap De Gea for any other keeper on the planet today, which is not to say that De Gea is the top keeper on the planet. But he's our keeper, he's done far more than what was expected of him so far and he's got a brilliant career ahead of him. He's only going to improve overall, though I imagine at some point over the next 4-5 seasons his cat-like reflexes will start to decline. Call me crazy, but we could be looking now at a keeper who will be even better the Schmikes, maybe even better than Zoff.

To be fair, Fergie wasn't shy of criticising him on a couple of occasions when (I suppose) he felt he really had made a mistake. He also clearly dropped him on a couple of occasions, right after some of these mistakes. So if he's coming out in the press refuting all the criticism this time, it must genuinely mean Fergie reckons he had a good performance, as opposed to the typical manager protecting player stuff. If that's the case, I'm glad — De Gea does seem to be improving, even when it comes to things like corners and crosses, and it'd be crazy if our staff and players were blaming him for the dropped points vs Spurs.

if there is anyone to blame for the goal, then it is the whole team. we allowed spurs loads of opportunities throughout the game and prior to that late goal de gea already made 4 or 5 fantastic/vital saves that kept us in the lead.

even my dad who is quite critical of de gea at times didn't criticize him that day because he knew it was the whole team that let down the goalie on that occasion.

nice words from sir alex btw.

Brilliant from Fergie. We never know what has been said to the team and De Gea in person of course, but backing him all the way in Press and public is outstanding and will give De Gea plenty of motivation.

What's the odds on Neville receiving/received a personal rollicking from Fergie?
Neville was only doing his job, but that hasn't Fergie in the past giving it to few folks

He's being defended on Sky Sports now. SAF's comments have done wonders, it seems.

I was gonna post in here a few weeks back that I thought it was odd SAF hadn't said anything.

The media is so shite all it needs is one person to buck the trend e.g. Neville with Carrick who now is getting praise from everyone that I would have thought Ferguson coming up and telling everyone to shut up would have done the trick months ago.

From BBC Sport

Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson calls David de Gea critics 'idiots'

Manchester united manager Sir Alex Ferguson has called critics of his goalkeeper David de Gea 'idiots'.

The Spaniard, 22, was criticised in the media for failing to clear the ball in the lead-up to Tottenham's equalising goal in Sunday's 1-1 draw with United.

"It's been over the top. It is always over the top when it comes to criticism here," said Ferguson. "You have to listen to some idiots in the game.

"I am not interested in discussing it because we know it is unfounded."
“We are high profile and the FA naturally panic as soon as the press criticise them.”

The United boss believed the blame should lie with assistant referee Simon Beck, who allowed, what he believed was a foul in the build-up.

Ferguson has been asked to explain his criticism by the Football Association and has to wait until Tuesday to find out if he will be charged.

"We are high profile and the profile of me is such that the FA naturally panic as soon as the press criticise them.

"Whether I think it is unfair or not doesn't matter to them really at this point.

"I just think it is more about me than what I have said."
Not sure about blaming the linesman like, but I think it'll do DDG the world of good receiving backing from Fergie and Schmikes.

Totally agree but then when Joe Hart makes a far worse error against Sunderland he obviously didn't give Hart the same level of criticism. Think this is where he has a conflict of interest with his coaching role in England.

Sczeczny (or however it's spelled) just botched a parry for a goal v Brighton, though the goal was disallowed for offside. I await worldwide condemnation of Sczeczny.

Just a moment later, he botched it again on a cross and the goal stands. We'll see if the British media crap all over him.

Starts again today. So much so he'll be dropped by Fergie

I'd have had no problem if Lindegaard played today, like he did against West Ham, but you know that the media would twist it that de Gea was dropped rather than Lindegaard playing because he could do with another game.

The Brighton keeper just punched the ball straight to Walcott, who replied with the cool finish. Wailing and moaning about the keeper to ensue...unlikely.

Christ!

Suddenly G.Neville is a cnut and not that good?

Have respect you cnuts. He can't be right every fecking single time. He cannot have the same opinion like you'll every single time.

Although I'm on the pro-De Gea side, that also shows that Swansea's number two is the 3rd best in Europe and the best in England, not De Gea. Think these don't tell the full story.

Should've come out and punched it. The stares he was getting from the players said it all really. The quicker we sell him and sign Shay Given, the better.

Kie will have a field day with this goal, won't he?

You could tell from the way that the crowd were looking at him that it's his fault

He was just making sure, every goal we concede needs to go through the "was it a keeper mistake" test first.
