"He's just stood up as a man," said Ferguson.

"The area where he's been criticised was the aerial ability in the box.

"He should have dealt with the last corner against Blackburn better. He knew that.

"He has addressed that section and it's a great improvement."

That does not mean De Gea is suddenly dominating his penalty area in the way legendary United keepers Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar used to.

However, he is starting to understand the need to impose his presence in penalty box situations and, at just 21, he has plenty of time to learn.

"It took him time to adapt to the different ways of the English game and he is showing that now," said Ferguson.

"The other night (against Fulham) he made two or three really terrific punches and blocks in the first and second half when they started to propel the ball into the box.

"He has shown fantastic improvement. We expected his ability to show and we are seeing that now."

Indeed, Ferguson believes De Gea is showing the same character traits exhibited by Blackburn manager Steve Kean, who has earned widespread praise for the dignified manner in which he has carried out his duties in the face of severe pressure from his own supporters.

"It's similar to what we were saying about Steve Kean," said Ferguson.

"He got a grip of it and stood up to the challenge.

"He didn't let it get to him and now the boy is playing with confidence. And confidence is a great factor in football."

ddg is playing out of his skin, those 3 saves in a row was world class

fantastic today...always had faith the lad would turn into a world class keeper for us.

Equal to the task. End.

"routine saves the lot of them, oh but his punch wasn't great, gordon would have caught that with his weak arm..."

Something like that

Honestly expected him to need a season or two to get used to the Premier League, but his class was always there

Best shotstopper in the league?

A statistical bulletin from @OptaJoe: "Of 'keepers with 10+ PL apps this season, David De Gea has the best saves-to-shots rate (79%), Paul Robinson the worst (55%).

edit - maybe we should be taking more shots tonight...

Been the best goalkeeper in the league this year hands down and I've seen a lot of Hart and Vorm.

funny thing is even when De Gea was struggling a bit, Reina's look none better yet DDG is the dodgy keeper.

Nobody is calling him dodgy anymore as far as I can tell. When he was dodgy it was pointed out.

Nothing wrong with that

Another very good performance from him.

He was brilliant tonight. Looks like he's enjoying his football a lot more now, which is always important.

To be fair he had a poor clearance where he needlessly gave away a throw in. So all in all an average performance.

He has responded just the way Fergie hoped for after being dropped a while in January.

I said 7 months ago, that come end of the season, we wont be discussing anything bad about him and he will have saved our asses way more times than he cost us

Valencia will go down as the match winner tonight, but de gea was sensational and kept us in it. He really has grown in just a few months.

He has suvived his rookie blip and it only gets better from here. We have one hell of a GK for close to two decades, which is very reassuring.

A so-called expert said during halftime that that save was a sign of De Gea's weakness as he claimed that Dave was out of position in the first place. Some people..

DDG was absolutely brilliant tonight. We could have been well behind but he kept us a clean sheet...Superb performance in a Very important game. Well Happy.

Its strange, but everytime an opposition player smashes one towards goal, I now kind of just expect De Gea to pull of a wonder save. Its becoming the norm.

I'm prepared to give him plenty of room to make mistakes and learn from them. But at the moment he's looking like a veteran keeper. You can see he's taken all the advice, and criticism, then put it into practice. It's very reassuring to imagine how much better he can be.

El mejor portero en la liga Premier. Verdad, no?

Loved his celebration when Young and Valencia scored, went absolutely mad.
