Indeed. He had to compete with another young goalkeeper as well, Sergio Asenjo. Won the position off of him the season he was bought for about 5m. Not bad.

Current world class players in our squad - Vidic & Rooney

Potential to be world class - Smalling & DDG.

all 4 bought :D

World class is a very loose term but if you're referring to top players in their position, Nani would definitely make my first list. So would Carrick arguably considering the season he's having.

In the 2nd list, i'd surely have Rafael and Welbeck too.

I was unsure re Nani as he does blow hot and cold at times but there is a strong argument for his inclusion in the first list. As to Carrick as much as I like him I don't think he is.

Rafael - hmm I think he has too often a mistake in him with his over aggressive play at times.

David de Gea definitely has the potential to be the best keeper in the world, there's no denying that.

For me, Vidic, Rooney and Nani are the only players who fit as 'world class' at the moment. Valencia's not too far off.

Other players who have potential at this stage in their career, in a similar vein: Jones, Evans, Anderson, Smalling, Hernandez, Welbeck, Fabio, Rafael, Cleverley. I predict maybe Jones, Smalling, Hernandez, Rafael and Cleverley have the best shot at ironing those words into their legacies.

Our players who have dipped in or around this bracket in their careers: Evra, Ferdinand, Giggs, Carrick, Scholes, Fletcher, Valencia.

Giggs and Scholes haven't half dipped. Lazy bastards.

DDG says that the boys needs to listen to more Metallica. He's sick of hearing only Kanye West and Jay-Z before games and when he decides the music he puts on Metallica and that the boys will learn to love that kind of music.

I like him more now.

Great taste !

Whatever happens this year, one of the positives has to be De Gea starting to establish himself as a Manchester United keeper

Absolutely flawless today, and he made a couple of top stops when called upon. Loved the catch off the corner and the quick counter near the end, if only we scored off it...

Solid yet again.. Making the saves he made today is sometimes more difficult than being in net when you're being dominated.. Hardly touched the ball for ten minutes at times before having to make a good save.. Very promising, he's going to be fecking ace, and he's going to be in the Spanish Euro 2012 squad for sure.

I hope all the critics are eating their words now. They couldn't wait to slaughter him at every opportunity. But he's looking like the real deal at the moment. So confident, so sharp and unfazed by anything.

Brilliant signing. Never doubted him.

That late save at the near post was very pleasing to see. We've seen better saves recently in matches where he's had to be top class to keep us in it, but that one demonstrated something new... concentration.

It's always been said that this is what a United goalie needs most of all... the ability to have nothing to do for 80 minutes, and then make that one crucial save when the time comes.

 Are you in Andy Gray mode SirA1ex :smirk:

Really impressive stuff recently from him today.

His main attribute is shot stopping and distribution of the ball, but he's not too far away when it comes to handling, so bodes well for the future.

Didn't put a foot wrong today.

Really liked it when one west brom player unleashed a driver towards goal and de gea catches it like its nothing.

Excellent today, again. I hope he is the permanent number one and Ferguson does not start rotating the keepers again.

A clean sheet today will have done him the world of good.

A few games ago, he started to look less fretful. It seems that he knew that we we're starting to see the player that Fergie knew he could be. If he continues this arc, he'll be world class.

Are we going to bump this thread with praise even if he has a quiet game? It was a normal day at the office for him. Made saves you would expect of your GK.

Well the Rooney thread gets bumped everytime he scores, Welbeck gets bumped every game he plays, as does Hernandez' so I don't see what the problem is?

If someone wants to talk about De Gea, this is the thread to do it. Are you mad if a thread you are not super interested in has some new posts?

Its not the bumping, more the over the top praise. People calling his performance flawless, brilliant, excellent etc. Just seemed like the sort of performance you'd expect from your GK. Didn't have much to do, when he was called upon, he made a few standard saves.

I don't think it's his performance today, it's the fact he managed to keep a clean sheet. Even in his good form lately, he has been struggling to keep clean sheets, and one will only continue to boost his confidence even further.

Unless I missed something he was flawless. He didn't have a lot to do but when he was called on he did exactly what was required. If people being happy about that offends you then don't click the thread.
