He has been amazing recently, will be a top, top keeper for us. I wasn't convinced a couple of months back...
I still maintain his distribution is over-rated, hit another one straight into touch, but I suspect those who have always backed him aren't banging on about that aspect so much anymore...

One great clearance to Evra on the touchline cancels out the overhit pass you picked up on

His distribution is excellent

De Gea is one of those rare keepers, like Schmeichel who not only pulls off great saves, but who is totally entertaining to watch when he is at the top of his game. I feel sorry that he has to play behind the slodge of shit that was playing tonight.

Holy shit, just finished watching the match. Fantastic stuff from de Gea. Get him some fecking help.

It doesn't make sense to big up a keeper after you concede 3 on the night...but he is the only thing, that prevented us from being humiliated. Not at fault for any of the goals, and overall had a very good game.

World class Performance, hope he gets to go euros, but very unlikely, reina has the 3rd slot.

Yeah, there's no rush for the lad...The NT knows his potential and have tabbed him as the heir apparent for the #1 keeper spot...I imagine he'll be going along to Brasil

He'll play the Olympics this summer. He's so fecking good, fantastic that he's got his confidence back.

I really hope people dont go back to panicking next time he makes a mistake (and he will, he's still yung n' lernin).....

Also worth pointing out that Hart, who many were pointing to being light years ahead of DDG and some sort of goalkeeping prodigy, was at fault for Sporting's goal last night... young players form goes up and down, who'd have thunk it!

Our only player with the right attitude and an excellent performance! Some brilliant saves. His reaction is really fantastic and I'm just happy that he has his confidence back.

Another thing i noticed is that his reading of the game has improved immensely. Due to that, his positioning has improved and he collects more and more balls

Thank goodness for De Gea last night. It could have been another huge humiliation for us. Amazing saves from him. He seems so much more assured. His communication will improve and the back four need to back him up. We're onto a special kid here.

Don't kid yourself, of course they will. When he's at fault for the goal sometime in the next three years there'll be at least 50 posts in this thread claiming he's shit and it was an unnecessary gamble to play such a young keeper. The fact that he's been fecking solid for a good while, and that he has potential to become one of the best goalkeepers ever, doesn't matter to some people if he makes a single mistake. Apparently people keep forgetting that keepers like Schmeichel and VDS made mistakes now and then as well, even in their prime.

Just to say people blaimg him for the third goal are insane. It was a bloody awesome shot which the striker took early. Most GK would have not got a hand on it.

Many time you have time to adjust and tip the shot around the post by altering your arm hand and body position. But in this case he did brilliant just to get a hand on it - he had to be at his maximum to stop the shot. What he needed was his defenders to be awake.

Consider the last game his amazing stop from Livermore deflected shot - Evans was awake and on hand to clear the ball. Rafael was at error. He could do no more than stop the third shot - he was let down by Rafael badly.

Give him another year or so in goal. Same with Jones Smalling the twins and evans and we'll be looking at a solid defence. Possibly one that can win the CL.

It's not even debatable, that shouldn't have been a goal. feck knows what Rafael was thinking, that wasn't even League 1 level defending.

To an extent I am encouraged by that comment

Already this good at such young age. Once he hits his prime he will be invaluable to us

If there are midfield reinforcements in the mean time

I wouldn't hold my breath over it, in 2015 SAF might still be saying Scholes & Giggs could go on for another year (like he does every year) and completely ignore the need to reinforce. I wouldn't be surprised.

So you should be encouraged. We've not been at our best defensively due to no Vidic and Rio. Evra has taken some dip in form over the last year or 2 and we've not got a permanent RB. DDG has taken a lot of stick but he's playing almost every week in a different defensive combo and most of them are newbies hence the optimism.

Just to support what I said before give all those players a couple more years and we'll have a defence that will be confident in itself. I've already seen a lot of improvement in DDG especially his command in his own area, he's become a lot more vocal and it's as if he knows he has to just do what he's doing and not doubt himself.

If there are midfield reinforcements in the mean time

I was going to mention the midfield but seeing as it was based around DDG I didn't. We are ok in the wingers department for the next 5 years. I'd say Cleverly will take over as our player maker in the next couple years and we'll probably fill in that last spot with someone else.

The muppet critique of keepers is getting out of hand - particularly the 'beaten on the near post' when the ball is hit at full power from inside 12 yards. De Gea did very well to stop that shot, it's unreasonable to have expected him to do more.

Great game from him. Evans too.

I'd like to see DDG and the back four use the short clearance more in order to keep possession. Valdes is great at it. Barca's defenders seem to make themselves more available for the short pass than the United back 4.

Smalling usually does an excellent job of opening himself up for a pass, but other then him, de Gea usually doesn't have many other options besides the traditional hoof up the pitch.

He doesn't hoof it up the pitch though. He goes for the flanks. That's a smart move because with Javier's and Nani's jumping power they often out jump the full backs. I believe Nani has the best ratio of headers won near the sidelines in the league. You need to be very careful then not to overhit the ball so it goes out for a throw in and so far his hit and miss ratio has been very good.

Agree. I'm not criticising De Gea's long kicks which are quite accurate, but rather questioning why the team is not emphasising short clearances, like most of the Spanish teams use. De Gea is very good with his feet and the short game would suit him.

DDG has been really fantastic for us in the last few games, but 1 thing i would like to highlight is that recently he has shown tendency to kick the ball outfield whenever the ball was passed back to him even under no pressure.

I'm not sure is this a sign that he is not comfortable with the ball being play to him or am i just thinking too much. I recall VDS was very comfortable and composed with the ball at his feet.

I for one would like to see him play the ball to the defenders more often instead of just hoofing the ball outfield.

Passing the ball out seemed to be one of his best assets during his early days here, and when I watched him at his previously for club and country. However, since Vidic got injured, and Rio in and out of the team, I assume the coaches may have restricted him to kicking the ball forward rather than pass to a team mate.
