De Gea keeping his beard until either United win the league or Spain win the Olympics:

DAVID DE GEA is in danger of ending up looking like a reject member of rock band ZZ Top.

Manchester United's keeper has vowed to keep his blossoming beard until at least May — but it could be a lot longer than that.

He said: "The beard pleases both me and my girlfriend. I want to keep it until United win the Premier League or Spain's team wins the Olympics."

But if both teams fail to Legs it to glory, the Spaniard is hardly going to be looking like a Sharp Dressed Man by the time next season starts.

De Gea, 21, gave some hair-raising performances early in the current campaign, though he has been razor-sharp of late.

Now he just needs to finish a cut above ...

I'm another fan of it. Don't see the rush to get rid. Don't need many guesses to work out where it's from with all of the puns in: I won’t shave until we finish ZZ top! | The Sun |Sport|Football

De Gea has also criticised the defence:

'For the third Athletic goal, the one Muniain scored, the defence was asleep,' said De Gea, who has faced his fair share of criticism this season.

'Rafael had fallen asleep. Some of my team-mates were a bit sleepy at Old Trafford. We played really badly and Athletic will beat you if you make it easy for them.

'But we'll go to the San Mames Stadium to give it another go.' De Gea's comments are particularly damning considering the fact that Ferguson urged his players to 'wake up' on the eve of the game.

David de Gea slams Manchester United defenders | Mail Online

Which is good to see in a way but not sure whether it was the best thing to do given our players have defended him quite a lot this season too when he was criticised for his performances earlier in the season.

Slams the defense

Told it like it is, like how everyone saw it. Thinking that someone is offside or stuff like that is never an excuse.

I also don't mind the beard. If him and the girlfriend like it it's all that matters. I have quite the beard myself. Barely shaved for half a year now and it's not a good one if I say so myself. Similar standard of DDG's I reckon but doesn't look as bad because it's darker.

I am sure that your beard is lovely, just like David's.

Nice video. He's quite clearly an excellent goalkeeper. 21 years old.

It's hilarious to see people writing him off as being shite.

if the ten in front of him don't make him hang himself first.

If Vidic doesn't play all of next season I can definitely see his temper going the way of Schmeichel, hopefully he can keep Rafael on his toes.

I very much doubt any keeper in the premiership has made as many spectacular saves as De Gea has. He is absolutely brilliant and in my mind, a lot better than I expected he would be. Absolutely chuffed that we signed him. Of course he has areas of weakness but he is 21 and miles ahead of almost any other keeper at his age both technically and in terms of the huge experience he had at the highest level.

That save from Mata... it's out of this world.

It really has turned is whole season around... and so it should. It doesn't get any less astonishing on repeat viewings.

Also, long live the David De Beard!

Not really! As you can see in the video, he was making some excellent saves long before that. Only change was media perception improved.

He was, but 1) that save was something else entirely, and 2) his whole demeanor is completely different now then it was a few months ago... you can tell just how much more confidence he has in himself, and it's showing in his performances. That save was surely the starting point.

Sure he was doing well before the save, but it didn't come without a few hair-raising moments.

Personally I think the long run of games has helped and not having the possibility of losing his place to Anders has taken some of the pressure off.

I don't think he has made that many major mistakes. You could easily go back to the Peter Schmeichel or an der Sar days and find a string of mistakes that were ignored by the media. Maybe Ferguson should have signed him a year ago and sent him on loan in the Premier League to gain some experience without the added pressure, just like City did with Hart at Birmingham. De Gea has actually kept us in the title race in recent weeks and think he could have a big future at Man Utd.

There's no doubt in my mind that the Mata save was a turning point in his season.

He had been better than the media claimed before that, and had made some good saves, but there's no doubt that he was looking shaky at times and wasn't playing overly well. The fact that Fergie dropped him from the first team showed that he thought De Gea wasn't playing overly well.

He was already making plenty of good saves before the turning point, however the key since then has been that he's been able to find a new level of consistency, looks a lot more confident, and isn't making silly errors at all anymore.

The thing that's most striking about that video is his handling is really brilliant. You'll see keepers like Jaaskeleinen get praised for fantastic reflex saves even if they end up palming it back out into the danger area but DDG so rarely does that, he's got fantastic grip. Easy to overlook when he's making a couple of saves a game but when you see it all in a row it's really impressive. I do love him a little. He's going to be outrageously good.

I still expect him to parry it back out every time I see it, honestly! He makes most of it look so casual and all, such a clean grab.

Am I the only one who is unable to spot these apparently incredibly obvious rises and falls in De Gea's on-pitch confidence levels? He looks pretty much exactly the same to me everytime I see him.

Yeah, although I've noticed he's getting more and more vocal. On a completely unrelated note, you should post here far more.

I feel that he's looked a lot more confident lately. He is becoming more vocal, and the little errors that were in his game earlier in the season are disappearing.

I agree, he's always looked confident to me, and he's always looked a good keeper to me too. I never understood the stick he was getting early days, was very unjust to me. He may be slightly more vocal, but that's about the only change I've noticed, and even at that I'm not sure it's been much of a change.

DDG will be absolutely immense!!!!

Was a bit wrong to think he needs a lot more time.

The rise DDG has had really is quite unbelieveable when you think about it.

3 Years ago he wasnt even 2nd choice for atletico madrid, and after 2 bad injuries to there main goalkeepers he gets a chance and takes it admirably.

Since then he has not looked back, and ends up winning the Europa league, then getting a move to 1 of the biggest clubs in the world.

Quite insane when you think about it!
