DDG was always a long term signing. Fergie would have expected some pain along the way.

I've always thought right from the start of the season that if we win the league with a goalkeeper in transition it would be a miracle.

You wouldn't rule it out with SAF though.

With Vidic also missing virtually the entire season I don't think ''miracle'' would do it justice.

Shouldn't have to sacrifice the league for a rookie keeper though. He's not prepared to risk the young Pogba/Morrison, but is for De Gea. Oh well no harm done...

De Gea is young but he's not in the same bracket as Morrison or Pogba.

He has over 100 senior appearances in one of the top leagues in the world.

Are you seriously comparing De Gea to "barely kicked a ball for the first team" Pogba and Morrison?

He obviously is. De Gea has a long way to go, but he was part a UEFA cup winning team, has played in some of the biggest stadiums in the world, and won an underage tournament with his country. Those two haven't.

It's absolutely laughable for people to try and cover up De Gea's fundamental GK weaknesses by putting it down to him being rotated for the odd league and cup game.

it's also laughable for people to not see that the boy has virtually zero confidence because of SAF's rotation policy. What does it say when he's dropped after having 3 put past him, and then Linders has 5 put past him in the next two games and continues to get picked. He is not a seasoned keeper so yes rotation is probably harder for him to get use too then older keepers.

Especially a club the size of United.

Okay class ... if you haven't been following along, and I know you have young shoots as you know I've taken a bit of stick for being somewhat smug wrt to a few posters on here (and pretty much all usual suspects ... you know who you are) ... have all 'raised their heads to have another go' again. Usual playground gang mentality.

LanceUppercut ... take it (back) on the chin ???? No ? No ?

D- ... must try harder.

When Schemeichel was De Gea's age he was in the World Wildlife fund, and was playing amateur football, when Van Der Sar was De Gea's age he just started at Ajax, let's not forget VDS was terrible at Juventus, years later. Goalkeepers don't just suddenly become world beaters. Hart was on loan at fecking blackpool at age 21.

No it's not the same in that respect no. He does look like a rookie in the first team though, out of his depth.

Again, what the hell is this fruitcake babbling about?

I dont think he looks out of his depth at all, doesn't he have more saves made than any other keeper in the league?

I think he suffers a bit from nerves, particularly when he doesn't have Rio or Vidic in front of him to take control in the area.

All quite understandable for a 21 year old, but I still think he'll be a top keeper.

Okay ... you coming across as being somewhat dim. Comprendez ? I tried other means which are far more interesting for me but in hindsight I should have just used the shovel and called it as it was ... plainly simple.

I apologise for being curt. Clearly English is not your first language.

I've come to accept that he wasn't ready for this season. The things he's doing wrong can and will be ironed out.

I do wonder how much this affects him?

Manchester United's error-prone David de Gea may need eye surgery
• Goalkeeper is long-sighted and plays in contact lenses
• Spaniard has lost first-team place after string of mistakes

David de Gea's erratic first season at Manchester United has taken place with the talented but error-prone goalkeeper suffering from an eyesight problem that may necessitate laser surgery at the end of the season.

De Gea, dropped from United's past three matches after making a succession of mistakes, is long-sighted and plays in contact lenses. United employ a full-time optometrist, based at their training ground, and the Spaniard has been recommended for treatment to restore his sight to normal as he tries to cut out the mistakes that have cost him his place as Sir Alex Ferguson's first-choice goalkeeper.

Having worn glasses for most of his life, De Gea was going to have laser surgery last March when he was at Atlético Madrid. At the time, however, the Atlético medical staff told him to wait at least another year because he needed a stable prescription.

United were aware of the issue when they signed him for £18.3m in the summer. De Gea has had regular check-ups since replacing Edwin van der Sar and held off the challenge of Anders Lindegaard until one mistake too many in the 3-2 home defeat against Blackburn Rovers on New Year's Eve.

De Gea has been at fault, to different degrees, for as many as six to nine goals in his first five months in the team and, though there have been times when his goalkeeping has been exceptional, his first season in England has been a difficult one. Whether there is any link to his vision is not clear, but wearers of contact lenses often find their eyesight is strained when watching football under artificial light, and the priority at Old Trafford is to make sure it is not even potentially a factor.

United still have high aspirations that De Gea, at 21, can demonstrate he was worth the money and become a great goalkeeper for the club.

The hope is that he can be booked in for laser treatment in June, when he could take advantage of the summer break to have the four-day period of rest that is advised. He is then expected to be selected for Spain's Olympics squad if, as expected, he misses out on Euro 2012 behind Iker Casillas, José Reina and Victor Valdés.

Just as a few (based on this site) don't think DDG is the right choice just now. Did I actually say Berbatov was a fail failure ? NOPE. As I said ... go back ad re-read ... you're blinded by your own opinion. I said that I thought Berbatov was a mistake for the way United played the game. Go back and check it out, you'll see I'm right.

Right... so that is not saying in-turn that he's a failure as a signing?? He was a mistake, but a good buy. Right... glad you've cleared that up.

Here's what you said I wrote: 'saying you've got some pleasure out of us losing to fecking liverpool because you've been proven right',

What I actually wrote:'You just hate it because I, and a few have been right all along ... I take a bit of pleasure in that, if only because it partly justifies my eye for the game but not because I want DDG to fail ... from day one he didn't look ready, and I'm still not convinced he does actually have all the qualities to be a top class keeper.'

Your subsequent reply above is some serious 'turning shit around'. You can't be taken seriously.

Again, what the hell... you've directly avoided the accusation by talking nonsensical bollocks. I'll say it again, you take a bit of pleasure in getting it "right" that DDG would be a "failure" is, in-turn, taking pleasure out of losing todays game of football. You can't have one without the other. That point still stands, no matter how you want to avoid it.

Funnier by the moment if it wasn't so pathetic.

Hilarious indeed... the original point still stands though. You didn't original read my post as you asked why I hadn't formed my own opinion on Gordon, when I clearly said that I had. Again, good way of avoiding the issue though, kudos to you.

The rest of your post was, by a clear distance, the most sensible/well-reasoned thing you've said all day... as it lacked any form of wummery.

The thing is if you were glasses it makes your sight as good as if you don't need glasses. But in football, among plenty activities, you can't wear glasses. That's wear contacts come in (and I'm not talking about your phone book on your mobile). They work the same way as glasses but you wear them on your eyes and you wouldn't notice a person wearing them at all.

It's not that simple, I wear both and despite being of relative strength would say I can see better with glasses, however being a vein (if not ugly) bastard I don't wear glasses often. That said I am Myopic, rather than Hyperopic.

Thanks for that.

Complete twat however is undeniable!

I think he was better and performed better than today during the early part of the season when he played a lot...
Since Lindergraad has been given the number 1 spot, he doesnt look that confident. esp today..

Well, we're not talking about reading fine print or billboards whilst driving. Between 1/5 and 1/10 (I'm assuming it's that many) of people need glasses somewhat. Tim Howard has tourettes. I think contacts do the trick fine.

I know that. And no doubt all of those keepers at the time had areas of their game where they needed to make serious improvements. What's wrong with pointing out the areas of De Gea's game which he needs to improve on as opposed to pretending there's nothing wrong and it's all been caused by some very modest rotation of the GK position?

Boom.

And that's why you should post more.

I've got no idea WTF you're on about now ... in fact I don't think you do either. I'm not going to even try to unravel your ball of confusion, so that's it for me ... can't be arsed with this anymore. Lets just leave it at that. Good night ... gonna have a few and watch the All Stars skills competition.:D

These two situations are completely different. Morrison and Pogba have barely made any first team appearances, while De Gea was already a regular in La Liga beofre he came here.

Don't think anyone else is struggling to grab it... it not exactly rocket science. But then you do love your aversion tactics when you're been called upon the bollocks that you spout. So let's just leave it at that aye.

If by "not in the same bracket" you mean they haven't had as much experience, well hello, but you can't gain experience by not being picked or sitting on the bench. We have a steadier option than DDG in what is a critical area yet we persevere with a nervy keeper. We could've easily, gradually blended Morrison or Pogba in at given times and this, in an area we are crying out for new blood and have had a deluge of injuries. If they can't get a game under recent circumstances, when will they ever get a game?......and in Fergie's own words he says if we don't give Pogba a chance, we'll lose him. I think his own prophecy might come to pass and we'll all wonder why.

Buying a keeper this young and highly rated means we have to play him and he's going to cost us goals. Goalkeeping is much more about experience than anything else, the learning curve will take a few years and we shouldn't be shocked when we lose or draw a few games because of it.

I'm really impressed with De Gea so far this year, I thought at first that Lindegaard would beat him out for the position because he's so solid. But De Gea has shown he can make goal-saving stops that Lindegaard can't get to, so there's benefits to each.

There's certainly no need to overreact, let's just hope he has the mental strength to fight for the starting job and eventually win it back.
