Good luck to him, he potentially gets to play regular football and play in the Champions League again. However, I don't think he truly lived up to the hype we gave him.

His work rate was fantastic but he lacked composure in front of goal, wasn't clinical enough and I always felt we never knew what his best position was. He was a jack of all trades but a master of none. I hope he does well but LVG didn't see a place for him in his starting 11 and he lacked the quality to start every game so maybe he's made the right decision to move on.

I don't think he will. Giroud, when fit, will start. He's a donkey but he's a donkey that scores. Welbeck is a faster, silkier donkey that doesn't score.

What you are saying is certainly up within the range of what is possible with him and I know I'm being optimistic. However, I still think he could easily do very well at Arsenal and he should finally get a good run as the main striker while Giroud is injured. If he hasn't taken the starting place by he time Giroud is fit then he probably won't be on target for 20 anyway.

Edit: not sure if I should say "optimistic" since he will be an Arsenal player! Will be strange seeing him put on an Arsenal shirt.

If our only striker was injured till Christmas and we just signed Danny Welbeck... Would we be happy?

As much as we like the guy, I honestly think we wouldn't. It's a gamble from Arsenal.

He's done it the only time he had a chance.
Alright. I'm sick of this. In many ways I'm looking forward to seeing him at Arsenal. It might prove me right or leave me with egg on my face but at least it's at an end.

Disappointing. I thought he's the exact type of player LVG would relish developing into a good player. Young, quick, skillful, the kind of player that fitted into his young Ajax squad of the mid 90s. Selling to Arsenal is just kinda disgusting but at least it doesn't feel as bad as them selling RVP to us.

I'd take Falcao any day over Welbeck. 16m is good piece of business. We are better with Falcao and Hernandez and Welbeck off so I think his departure was imminent(LvG doesn't seem to rate him that highly).

I hope we get it to the point where all they need is us to fax through one last thing and all we send is a scan of Woody's arse with "AS IF feckHEADS" tattooed across it.

Not really a useful statistic when he's played so little.

If he'd played two games and scored one goal then I could maybe see your point, but he scored as many goals as Negredo in the league last year in considerably less games up front. This idea that he can't score for toffee is absurd. His goalscoring last season was a significant step up and better than Giroud (193 minutes) or Negredo (192 minutes) and yet it was forgotten about almost instantly. He misses plenty (as does Giroud, as does Sturridge) but he can score all kinds of goals and creates chances for himself with his pace, intelligence and combination play in and around the box.

He's not that young, nearly 24. And it's quite telling if a manager so good as spotting and developing talent doesn't actually want him.

I have no doubt that Welbeck will have the sort of impact Sturridge had at Liverpool. Welbeck was never given the chance to play through the middle, only when others were injured then he played a game or two in the middle.

He has all the qualities: Tall, strong, holds up the ball, very good in build up play, can keep the ball on his feet (suit's Arsenal playing style), has very good movement off the ball. Arsenal will create many chances for him, he will score goals-just needs a run of games. Strikers need to build on their confidence.

He is also only 23 years old! He has plenty of years to get his finishing sorted out, we have a three 28-30 year olds as our strikers!

Very sad to hear about this.

Could bite United in the arse this one.

Don't see the sense in selling him, a loan maybe but not a permanent move.

Strangely not too fussed about this. I know he's a local product and losing him will be a shame no doubt. But it just might open up a far bigger opportunity for Wilson, who also an academy graduate and more talented IMO. Plus he'll get to learn from Rooney + Robin + Falcao. Dunno we'll see.

The transfer fee could've been higher TBH but then Chelsea sold Sturridge for about £12 million. Anyway goodbye and goodluck Danny. :)

I will be fussed about this if Falcao is unable to play with some of our other zombie strikers. Welbeck at least could play alongside Rooney and Mata. But nevertheless, we have Wilson and hopefully he will live up to his potential and gets the opportunity to play for us. So, Welbeck leaving will probably have as much impact to us as Sturridge leaving Chelsea had. He will strengthen the team he went to, but with our resources, we will continue to challenge and maybe win the title again.

On the bolded part, that also strengthen my argument towards lynk. Chelsea selling Sturridge for only £12m showed how much he was overlooked.

Its a great move for Welbeck. I can see why he went. First choice for a top four team. He has the chance to prove his worth as a striker.

To be fair we all complain that the squad is full of players not good enough. He is a better than some of the dross who will get to stay. He is a bit unlucky to be moved on but when a player like Falaco come along what do you do? Welbeck is nearly 24 and has yet to consistently deliver the end product. We can't hand around and wait for it. We need proven talent to get us back in the top 4.

If you were Welbeck would you want to stay?

LVG has a job to do - get the team into the top 4 and then win trophies. Buying the best players will help him achieve this. If that means replacing players with better ones so be it.

Obviously the romantic inside is all would like the local lad to succeed and become a top draw player but we live in times where other well funded clubs don't make that option viable any more.

I feel sorry for the lad but it's best for all parties imo.

What made Sturridge so good was that Sturridge is much better at beating his man than Welbeck is. This makes Sturridge more dangerous than Welbeck, and this is what makes Sturridge better than Welbeck. This is why Sturridge perfomed/performs better than Welbeck out wide. This was why Sturridge instantly looked good in Bolton whilst Welbeck took a while to impress people during his loan spell at Sunderland. Plus, Coyle played him as more of a wide forward whilst Welbeck played more as a winger.

Given how often Giroud scored goals for Arsenal last season, I believe Welbeck can do as well if not better. I struggle to think how Welbeck will perform worse than Giroud.

I'm glad he is off simply because I won't have to keep reading how good he is going to be.

At some point.

Soon.

Because reasons.

I don't doubt he can score goals, given trust and time, and support from Ramsey, Özil and the rest he will blossom.

I have my doubts over his ability to play as a lone striker though, he normally comes too deep to get the ball.

...and going into next season our strikeforce will consist of 30 year old Rooney, possibly permanently crocked 32 year old RvP, and maybe Wilson. Apart from anything else, we should have the good sense to avoid strengthening one of the 2 sides (along with Liverpool) we'll likely be in closest competition with for a top 4 place this season. It all seems pretty short-sighted to me.

Agreed. Terrible bit of business which I 100% guarantee will bite us on the arse. Not only will we have to endure Arsenal doing better than they would have done, we'll have to watch a player who should be still at our club winning them the points they need to keep us at bay. So angry about this. One more reason to add to the long list of things which have made last couple of years an absolute ball ache. Ruined what should have been a really enjoyable transfer window.

Feel free to point out any other extended run of games he's had playing as a striker and not produced. You won't do it, because you can't. He's been wasted wide the majority of his career.

This is Moyes' fault, could have fecked off Rooney and done us all a favour FFS.

Exactly. The average age of our best three strikers is pretty close to 30 years old. That'll end well...

The more I read this thread, the more I can only think that a lot of the posters on here have simply never seen Falcao play. We have replaced Danny Welbeck with Falcao, and people are complaining.

Good God.

I'm truly expecting a thread to pop up in the general discussion called "No really, the world is flat" and 50 pages of people agreeing.

It's just embarassing and they are reminding me of some RAWK posts.

He did not take the bull by the horns, He was not good enough. I have no doubt that he gave his best and it was almost good enough. But something was always missing. he always seemed to be nearly the finished article. But he never quiet reached the level needed. Falcao should be a higher level now than Wellbeck. We want to get back on top,in Europe and to be honest we were never gonna get there with Wellbeck , Cleverley, and co. We need to use our financial power and we are doing that right now.
