Good luck Danny. will still be happy to see him score, just hopefully not against us.

Disappointed it's to a rival but good luck to him.

If he was that good he'd have played as a striker more. He wasn't because Rooney is on another planet in terms of goalscoring and overall ability, hence why he always plays up top.

SAF wanted to sell Rooney because he realised he's done. Last season Moyes couldn't be seen to lose face when he didn't get any of his main targets and would have been crucified in the press had he sold Rooney to a rival, we kept Rooney and his "partnership" with RVP was a disaster. Welbeck will prove plenty of people wrong at Arsenal.

What manager would tell a player they would be a main striker with RVP and Rooney at the club already though? Only a player like Falcao could be told that.

Which is my exactly my point. Welbeck wasn't good enough to be our main striker, and wanted first team football as a main striker, so was always going to go. He isn't guaranteed that at Arsenal once Giroud returns, but he'll have a better chance there than here.

But if he'd told Welbeck that he was going to be our main striker then Welbeck would've probably stayed. He obviously didn't, because he doesn't feel he's good enough for that, and that he won't be.

Let's face it, Welbeck is the most instinctive player ever – totally unpredictable – the exact opposite of what LVG likes his players to be.

Such a stupid decision. It's not as if he would have been able to leave on a free to arsenal soon either. Arsenal, of all bloody teams. If it clicks for him there, we've just made 4th harder for ourselves.

This is a massive downer on this window for me. Big fan of Danny, proper local lad.

He was adamant that he wanted a permanent move to Arsenal only.

Option was to keep a sulking 4th striker running down contract taking time away from Januzaj and Wilson as well.

And tbf he won't improve till he plays regularly.

I also think this deal makes sense for all involved parties, if you're willing to overlook the fact that we're selling to a rival. Welbeck obviously won't get the opportunities he wants here, because we have other options ahead of him. Arsenal don't, to the same extent at least.

Anyways, c'est la vie, and congrats to Arsenal for bagging a quality striker. He'll get around 20 goals in the league for you guys, and will help you in Europe as well. His big game mentality is fantastic.
No way is he getting 20 goals at Arsenal. You can quote me on that. His finishing is fecking awful, no matter how much game time he gets, it's still shit, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if by the end of the season Giroud and Walcott end up scoring more goals than Welbeck.

10-15 is more likely.

Deal agreed. What the feck are we doing?

I dunno, it's a worry, especially after the way Arsenal mucked us about over Vermaelen (which seems like an eternity ago).

I presume we don't think he's capable of scoring a last minute winner to secure 4th place for Arsenal at our expense. That's worth far more than whatever fee we're getting.

Also, he's the last manc in our squad (who's actually going to get a game).

Selling a decent squad player who wants to leave for a respectable fee since he'll be 4th choice here.
To a rival fighting for (most likely) 1 really important spot in the league. Don't forget that bit.

I'd have just told him he's not going to arsenal and he's not playing ahead of those players. He'd have moved elsewhere.

It's not awful as such, but it's very inconsistent and this notion that Welbeck is suddenly going to become a prolific goalscorer at Arsenal is way off the mark. So we can agree on things to an extent.

It looks like he wanted first team football and i image that LVG said to him you can be a sub or go on loan develop a bit and get a chance next year in the first team.

He instead went to our rival for top 4. He forced it simple as that and noone wanted him gone.

Even though I don't rate Welbeck as highly as most of you lot on this forum do, this is a ridiculously stupid move. Utterly baffling to hand Arsenal a life line like this when Giroud's injury has made them look the most fragile of the teams you're chasing for the top 4. It doesn't matter whether you think him a 20 goal a season player potentially, the fact is with Sanogo up front they're struggling, with a semi-competent striker they'll score goals as they create enough opportunities not to.

I know, Falcao is class in comparison, and maybe that justifies looking after your own before being concerned with your rivals. However, maybe I'm old fashioned, but imo selling to your rivals willingly is beyond comprehension.

This hurts. The good people at Arsenal have gotten themselves a very classy, very talented player.
It feels very strange, having to convince Arsenal mates they've actually signed a very good player for a good fee. "He's not Loic Remy though is he!"

That's the key bit. It's their main weakness ffs. They have sanogo upfront when Sanchez plays in his favorite position. That's brilliant for us.

You said
But if LVG had really, really valued him then he'd have kept him and played him.

Maybe he does rate Welbeck, but just rates RVP and Rooney higher? I'm done with this anyway, I don't even know what we're debating about now tbh

He'll be the next Daniel Sturridge.

Maybe! but he won't be the next Sturridge if he stays at United, that's for sure.

A change might be just what he needs, because he is nowhere near good enough to lead the line at any big club at the moment. So he needs to take on a huge metamorphosis to become the 30 goal a season man, which is what is required at the top level.

Backup is his current level, and backup is what Arsenal are buying him for.

Only United could buy Shaw for £30m and sell Welbeck for £16m. Simply incredible. Not surprised he wanted to leave given the disgraceful way he's been treated. In two or three years' time we will be regretting our stupidity.

Good player, but ultimately he does not score enough goals to regularly play centre-forward for Manchester United. I actually think he'll eventually find himself a squad player at Arsenal too.
