He caused more havoc in those 20 minutes than our all players did in last 180. But that pass was so wrong, he should opt for pass back to our defenders there, like our any other player would do.
i know right... Even Manone recognized the danger in that pass....

dont know why you replied to him

Interesting take on it. Way I saw it, Young was completely free in that area of the pitch, and made up 15 yards or so (can't be exact on that obviously) after Welbeck played the ball. So, there's a lot of grass there, for a start. Then, he's managed to play the pass to an area where, one of our fastest players, at full tilt, is not favourite to win it (as evidenced by the fact that their keeper actually won it) - that in my view is indicative of a bad pass. Young had acres of space, Welbeck essentially managed to put it where Young was the less likely of the 2 to win it. If a pass like that is played in midfield, it's a bad pass. Why any different when it's a forward pass to a teammate in acres of space?
thats why it is not a great pass. where would you have liked him to play the ball, considering the space Young was in. should he have played it a little behind where he actually passed. maybe, i thnk he should have a put a little more weight on the ball, and passed it a little behind where he actually did, but no way is it an awful ball

He and I think I might be starting to prefer him partnering Rooney up front as opposed to Van Persie, but I still think our best option would be a 4-3-3 with Di Maria and Januzaj on the wings and Rooney lone striker in front of Mata. Which still doesn't solve his problem of wanting to be a starter, and we'd also have Van Persie as a sub. If he was 2 years younger it would be perfect but he isn't. Maybe a loan would be best because I definitely wouldn't want to sell him.

He seemed a little sluggish, but still made a decent impact.

He is really important to the quality of our pressing. Both he and Herrera were missed in the first half, as Sunderland controlled the game.

Maybe I'm mis remembering it. I'll have to watch the replay again but I remember thinking the minute he hit it that he should have used inside of rather than outside for two pretty obvious reasons. 1,more control playing a pass that way. 2, ball moves towards forward instead of keeper / any defender coming out. Simple, basic error in my opinion, making it a bad ball. But maybe I'm wrong, will have to check out a replay.

you do know Manone had to leave the box to intercept the ball right??

i am making the case for it not being an awful, but rather a good pass, but it isn't essentially great one because it didn't come off.

i think if you read the conversation we were having you will get where i am coming from

oh ok. because dirkey is not making any sense. Passing with his outside foot actually put the desired curve on the ball.

No surprise they dropped much deeper once Welbeck was brought on. It's crazy we're letting our only attacker with pace leave.

We looked far, far better with him on the pitch. I don't think that playing a formation just to fit in Rooney, RVP and Mata is the best way forward.
I agree. We had them pegged back to a certain extent when Welbeck came on. Rooney, Mata and RvP are all excellent players but they don't give the team the best balance. Something's got to give.

I mentioned this yesterday and people were on me for liking a player who only 'runs around a lot.' Well, apparently that running around stretches the opposition and makes it harder for them to clear the defending third, which is more than we can say for a lot of our other players.

Dickey. Nice. As I said, maybe I'm wrong and will have to watch it again but the right curve, as you claim, moved the ball to where the keeper could get it.

Yep, he offers that run behind the defence that forces them back. Van Persie makes the same run, but he doesn't have the raw athleticism to get away from the defenders.

In today's match, Rooney must have touched the ball about 5 or 6 times within the first 25 minutes. Every attack was predictable, and it was only Welbeck and Adnan's introduction that made any real change.

I have no idea why I did it either, but comments on Welbeck never fail to amaze me.

The only thing he did wrong was that he didn't lash the ball across the 6 yard box when he got the better of the defenders, instead he turned back inside and lost the ball. He provides a completely different attacking option to RVP and Rooney because he has pace, get him running at and off the shoulder of the defenders and he'd be great. Shouldn't be selling him, rather Hernandez, Kagawa and Young went first.

No rumours again, either because the priority is Di Maria and other potential signings right now or it was all his agent's doing and he is staying! Pls pls pls stay!!!!!!

I agree. Keep him, he has potential.

He's integral if we are to persist with the 3-5-2 in particular, but someone we simply cannot afford to lose whether we play with one up top or two anyway. Aside from di Maria, he is the one player who successfully combines athleticism and pace with technique and flair. His ability to stretch and penetrate defences while increasing the tempo with his sharp, link-up play offers a different dimension to the team.

Personally, I will be devastated if he leaves. He obviously has his weaknesses with his finishing and output, but even those are aspects of his game I am confident he will vastly improve in. I don't blame him if he wants to leave especially after today though when LVG opts for van Persie who is really off the pace at the expense of Welbeck purely down to his name.

If we play 4-3-3 he could be easily our first choice as a wide left striker, giving him more freedom and attacking duties than in Moyes season would give us edge. Januzaj could play from the right, They all could rotate.. and dimaria could also bench mata to play as CAM so we could give both our players minutes on the wings... I think there is a better chance for danny if we switch to 4-3-3 than if we stay wit 3-5-2..Yes he would be a good striking partner to any of our strikers but geez rooney has an armband and RVP is van Gaals buddy.. He had to see this desparation today.. Welbeck is as important to our team as Degea. We must not let him go and play him. Our play is much better with him than without.. we havent created a chance IRC today with trio of our "best" players. When van Gaal talks about balance in midfield he must see clear imbalance upfront, lack of movement and ability with the ball in tight spaces in pace.. If anything Welbeck is a great player for balancing the team due to his versatility.

You're right. This thread is priceless. All I've said is that he messed up one ball, and people are finding it appalling. Some people refuse to see any criticism of Danny for some reason.

He's not talking about the thread. But your comment on Welbeck never fail to amaze him.
Criticism of Danny for a good pass? Jeezz. May be our players should learn how to pass like Welbeck. Try to play forward as much as they can because it's better than being scared to use your inside and outside your foot to make forward passes.

His pace is vital. Rvp, Rooney, and Mata are all too slow. Their movement isn't too bad but it still seems static when they play. I know RvP isn't matchfit but Welbeck offers us something completely different. It'd be insane if he left.

A pass that doesn't make it to a teammate is a good pass now?

It's about recognising the intent and the difficulty of executing that pass. Manone did extremely well for a GK to sniff out the danger and intercept that pass. Even then, it's very much 50/50.

Cleverly had tons of passes that made it to a team mate but you won't call any of it a good pass.

What about give credit to the goalkeeper instead criticism a good pass. That was a clever pass and was the right decision to do it with outside his boot given the current situation. Just unlucky that Mannone made a brave decision came out from the box and made a very good slide tackle.

You need to look at the situation first before judging the pass based on successfully or no. It made to his own teammate. Young was on the situation where he could get the ball first. He was closer with the ball. And Mannone knew this, so he made a brave sliding tackle to beat Young for it.

It was the right decision to do it with outside. There was a player in front. So he couldn't make it with inside of his right unless if he can "bend it like Beckham". If he used his inside left foot, it will slow down a few second the tempo since Young made such a quick run already in a free space. So it was the right decision to do it with outside of his right.

that what i was trying to tell them earlier. Making the pass with the outside of his foot gave the ball the proper bend. Manone rightly deserves credit for recognizing the danger and leaving his box to intercept it because the pass had beaten the CBs.

I actually watched it again and I both agree and disagree. Ha. He had to go with outside but that was because of his initial mistake of taking a touch. Had he hit the ball first time, inside of foot, behind the covering defender, the bend would have been perfect into young stride and away from keeper.

Unbelievable!! You are just trying to cover your mistake. It's not like he needs to be a maestro like Scholes or Alonso.
Welbeck did it really well. And it was a smart ball. Even though he's a striker, that pass was better than any of our centre midfield passes today. If you have time to complain on Welbeck decision making a pass. Just go to Cleverley or Fletcher thread. Why can't they do that, the result won't be 1-1 if they managed to do that. I rather see players taking a touch and then made a good pass rather than hit it first time but went out way too far from the target. You need to be a great quality passer to hit it first time by switching it from right to left. With our current team we only have Rooney and Carrick or may be Mata who can switch the ball really quick like that consistently.
He took his space and time to do the pass and he did it really well (not too long and not too early), and it was a good decision for him.

Not in the slightest am I trying to cover my mistake. I think he messed up there and I've watched replays to confirm my own opinion. You and others disagree which is your right. I feel no need to prove myself right, nor cover my tracks as you seem to think as I'm simply stating my opinion as others do. With regard Fletcher and cleverley, they are just not good enough. At least welbeck shows flashes, hence I don't frequent their threads. Also, this thread is topical after the transfer rumours.

So you called it a bad pass just because his mistake was not to hit it first time? Everyone was just disagree with you which makes sense. Welbeck isn't Scholes or those world class midfielders and he's not even a midfielder. You need to have such a great pass and world class vision to hit it successfully first time to be able to see Young run in Welbeck situation and spot.
Actually Mata did it once yesterday, and he missed Ashley Young, and the ball went out. It's not easy. If Welbeck hit it first time and missed it like what Mata did, what are you going to do? Abuse him even worst?

And also what Welbeck did was a through pass. If Welbeck hit it first time, it will just be a switch play since Young didn't make any run before Welbeck first touch, and who knows what Young did after that, pass it backward again may be.
Welbeck did well for creating space for Young to run free. And launched the ball with outside of his boot when he saw Young's run. I can't see any mistakes for that.

Improved us as a team when he came on. I'd be tempted to play him in place of one of RVP and Rooney, as that partnership is to static alot of the time, where welbeck can pick up and carry the ball. Not to mention his pressing is great as well. While the overall quality may dip up front, it will be far more balanced team wise

Sky Sports news hearing Everton are looking at the possibility of a transfer for Welbeck but it's more likely to be on a loan deal rather than on a permanent basis.

I'm glad it looks like a loan. Welbeck and Lukaku up front :nervous:, that's a very formidable partnership. If it's just a loan, I'm still not happy about the deal, but at least he'll be back next season. Selling him would be insane imo. He'll definitely improve with regular game time.

That wouldn't be the worst thing. He gets some valuable experience in his main position in a team that plays good football. Januzaj and hypothetically Di maria could fill his role in the meantime. We could be aiding a potential rival though.

Not sure what we're doing strengthening Everton though.
