Danny Welbeck | Manchester United: 2001-2014

I believe Welbeck is a great talent, but it's a talent that needed to be honed, partly though games. When we signed RVP we put a stop to that, after a good season Welbeck had for us. Since then he's been partly on the bench, partly on the wing, and not that much upfront. When he sees how his career stalled, nearly at 24, while Sturridge went to a club which believed in him and prospered, I can see why he won't accept a bit part role any more. And he's probably right. For his own good, maybe he should get out, unless we're willing to make a big step and really push him through - which isn't happening.

I agree.
With him gone we'll have even less pace than before which is awful. That is if we dont sign Di Maria and I doubt we will tbh.

He's basically the only player we have who combines genuine pace, and technical ability. The last thing we need to do is lose even more pace from the team.

This is the first time my confidence in LVG has wavered.

I expect Danny has been allowed to leave if he wants as he won't be first choice, but doubt very much he is being ushered out. Why would he? Good team player, not astronomical wages, English...expect he wants guaranteed first team football though.

I'm late to the party, but I'd be gutted if Welbeck were to leave. It isn't just sentimentality either why people like myself don't want him to go. It isn't about him being English or a Manc. I'm genuinely of the opinion that we are a better team with Welbeck on the pitch. I thought LvG would love him, and not just for his pace either, he is very tactically astute and his link-up play in and around the box with his little flicks and quick passes makes us less predictable, less ponderous and helps us to break teams down easier. I'm hoping he stays.

If he did, he'd be going against the wishes of Van Gaal.

There's no way in the world Van Gaal would ask a player to not speak with his agent about what happened in a meeting that was regarding his future at the club. He's far too experienced a manager to ask something so ridiculous.

What Van Gaal said in the press conference was just shit to avoid answering a question.

He could do both. Keep Welbeck. Give minutes to Wilson.
Sell Hernandez.

I don't know, Hernandez got no more than scraps last season and if we move to a 4-3-3, a 3rd striker might be a luxury in itself. I have a feeling Giggs is a big believer in Wilson and wants to see him get as much development time as possible.

Well, people just keep speculating. It's kind of annoying me, to be honest. Who's to say Van Gaal didn't say to Welbeck he'll start ahead of Rooney or Van Persie (not realistic, but just making a point).

Maybe Van Gaal didn't give a definate answer as to what was said in the conversation to prove that the media chat shite (like we didn't know that already anyway). If they are indeed right about the situation, then I wish Wlebeck the best of luck if he's to move on.

VG basically said exactly that "the media chat shite" and he's spot on, what is clear though is that he didn't deny it.
Of course it wouldn't be a huge surprise should Welbz move on. It might be the best scenario for all, he's going to be mainly used as a wide man but in this new system they need to be experienced at fullback, even should we switch to a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or similar (depending on incoming transfers) I can't see how Wellbeck could be used effectively.

Yeah selling Welbeck and keeping Cleverley makes perfect sense..

They don't play in the same position and the situation is most likely different to one another. Cleverley is probably happy being a back up. Welbeck most likely wants to play every week.

We're going to have the slowest team in the league at this rate (the rate of selling our few fast players and buying... well, no one)

A homegrown player with bags of talent, and we cant fit him in.. But Ando,Clevz,Fellaini,Younger and Valencia get to stað this makes no sense what so ever.. RVP is always injured and we need pace up front. He would be a starter if was a manager..

Even if RVP were injured he would have to compete with Januzaj and Wilson in a 352. There are less matches this season without Europe. It might not be enough for him.

Would you not say Welbeck is ahead of Januzaj and Wilson?

He's ahead of Wilson. Not sure about Januzaj. It depends on how LVG sees it. If he sees potential in Januzaj and Wilson he might want to give them more playing time even if Welbeck is better right now.

Everton and Spurs? They're the two teams we'll be competing against this season. We should tell them to feck right off. Plus they both rinse us whenever we want to buy their players.

We have to sell with the players best interest, though. We're not going to sell Danny to like Hull, if there's interest from Everton, Spurs, etc, especially if those clubs are offering first team opportunities. He'll want to go to an ambitious club and rightly so.

All the media outlets reporting it means they have been briefed by someone. Probably from Welbeck's camp.

He is a good player to have in the squad and it's nice to have a local lad but I've never been convinced he would remain here, he isn't good enough to be a starter for United and how long will he want to be on the bench.

Yes. That is one of the concerns of selling Welbeck. All our attackers are technically very good but lack that burst of pace and acceleration. Makes us easy to defend against.

Just arrived back in, not overly surprised by this. I think Welbeck is a fine squad player, but have never thought he should be promoted to being a starter in the way some people have. If we can get 20 million for him, I think it's a very good deal. I'd have to hope that we'd go ahead and try to sign a few more players ourselves however, but if Welbeck has asked for a guarantee of first team football (who knows if he has or hasn't), then I can see that selling him is an option. If we do sell him, hope he goes on to have a good career, won't be massively upset, unless we sell him for pittance.

Wouldn't mind a straight swap for McCarthy there. Would benefit all parties if he has to leave. Similar age and potential.

Selling Welbeck would be beyond stupid. We'd be a much better attacking unit if Welbeck was played up top for us IMO. Even if you disagree, on an expedient level, RvP has a history of muscle injuries and was back to his perma-crock ways last season. Chica tbf can barely control the football and Wilson is fecking 18. He should be getting plenty of games up front anyway.

Tough one this one. I'd rather him not go. He offers pace up there which we all know we lack. Similarly, there's an awful lot of deadwood I'd like to see go before him. Plus, I enjoy seeing the local lads who've come through the ranks in the first team providing they're good enough.

If (and it's a massive 'if' for me) we get Di Maria that'll change things as he'll provide the pace up there and we can get a fair amount of games in there for Wilson and Januzaj, assuming Welbeck and Hernandez go which might be the best thing long term as we all have high hopes for those first two.

I'm not convinced Danny is, or ever will be, absolute top class which is what we now need to be striving for more than ever. I'd like to keep him as a squad player, but it looks like he might well go to play first team games elsewhere. As things stand we will be weaker if we let him go this window, so we need to be careful.

The only competition that matters is for fourth place, and I doubt either Everton or Spurs will be getting that. Does it really matter if one of them pips us to 5th or 6th?

I tend to agree with ya on pretty much everything there. I'd take Welbs over Hernandez every day of the week as he offer more to the temas play in terms of build up, speed and winning the ball back for us whereas Hernandez is super off the bench but shite when he starts.

The only little quibble I would have is that I've always felt welbeck just lacked composure in front of goal which essentially would come from playing regularly in his favoured position, that being striker. If long term were gonna play 433 then his chances will be limited as only 2 strikers would be sufficient enough for a season. It's a toughie really id like to see em stay but if he's gotta go for the greater good then so be it because we actually can't afford to be sentimental in the slightest anymore if we intend to challenge at the highest level.

True. Hopefully that will be reversed if someone wants Welbeck. We are terrible at selling, but with Welbeck ticking the boxes of being a young, developing English international, surely he should be costing silly money?

Then again, I'd rather see Hernandez go than Welbeck. He has so much more about him, and I still think he's far from being the finished article.

Well said.

With one or two obvious exceptions, Welbeck is close to being the last player I want us to let go right now.

It's partly due to him being home-grown, but not in a sentimental way (well, not just that anyway). We've spent years developing him, which means playing him ahead of potentially better ready-made options... if we do that only to let him go when he's right about there, what the feck was the point? We have just weakened ourselves in past matches for no long term gain.

Sounds like Welbeck's people briefing the press, again. Let him go, he's not good enough to even be having an argument over.

do you guys think LVG is looked at Welbeck's injury history before making this decision? He's had a lot of knee injuries.

To me it makes no sense to get rid of him. He is something very different to our other strikers. He's quicker, happy to get in oppositions faces and is generally good at the build up play. I know he doesn't score anywhere near enough but play him up top more often and we may see a difference. But anytime I've seen him he causes the defence worries, he's pretty direct and we lack that in our squad. It's not a real argument to keep him but I like that a player with good potential and ability is a local lad and supports the club. He'd do his damn best every time he steps out on the pitch and all he needs is consistency and a run of games.

Be a huge shame to lose him. The fact that he's very different to the strikers and other options we have in that position make him an asset in my opinion. In the pre season we looked good when he played, so I'd like to think LVG saw that and the papers are making shit up.
