Danny Welbeck | Manchester United: 2001-2014

Danny Welbeck has been told by Louis van Gaal he can leave Manchester United, with the decision up to the 23-year-old striker who has two years remaining on his contract.

Van Gaal’s decision may cause some surprise because the manager wants to play a 3-5-2 formation that would seem to require four forwards in his squad to provide competition and to mitigate against injury. With Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie the first choice pairing, Welbeck was thought to be ahead of Javier Hernández as the third striker.

“I know what I said to Danny and Danny knows exactly what I said to him,” Van Gaal said, when asked about the decision. “I assume that Danny Welbeck is not saying anything about our conversation and also in that conversation was [the assistant manager] Ryan Giggs and he doesn’t say [anything] either, and that is the way it should be.”

Van Gaal may have decided to look at promoting James Wilson, the 18-year-old who scored twice on debut in last season’s 3-1 win over Hull City at Old Trafford.

There has been speculation that Welbeck may move to Hull, with the forward thought to be priced around £20m, but it is understood that the Humberside club are not high on the player’s list of destinations.

Not sure if posted already but Jamie Jackson saying that LvG might be interested in opening up minutes for Wilson.

What's the situation with Danny then? Be such a crap decision if we were to let him go. That said, if he feels he needs to leave to play regular football, then fair play to him.

We should not be letting Welbeck leave. He is going to be some player.

I think it would be an awful decision if we sell Welbeck, he will develop in to a fantastic player in a few years. That said I wouldn't mind it if we sent him out on loan - Southampton for instance - because it's now past the stage in his development where he needs to be playing regularly.

It's crazy to think about selling him, I'm shocked we'd even be considering this. We played so much better with him on the pitch during pre season. We have RVP who is injury prone and probably has two seasons left. Rooney who is due to hand in another transfer request at the end of the season, Hernandez who isn't good enough to be first choice and Wilson who has played one game for the first team. I get that we have Januzaj to play upfront possibly as well.
A lot of people having been saying 'if Welbeck wasn't Mancunian' ect ect, but he is, and we need players like him or we are no different to Chelsea or City.

I believe that Welbeck has been told that Wilson is going to be promoted. Wilson has proven himself to be a precocious talent. Scored two good, important goals on his debut as well. Considering that we'll be playing considerably lesser games this season, Welbeck's chances at CF will be limited. Yes, he's got a lot of potential bit so does Wilson, and the latter has proven himself to be a deadly striker in the RVP mould. As LVG has repeated several times he favours brain over brawn and sadly Danny has more brawn being the athletic player he is.

I'm sad to see Danny go, but more excited for Wilson.

I'm not gonna pretend to be outraged to see him go although I'd rather keep him than see him leave. He's a great striker but I really doubt he'll ever be world class and he's absolute shite at finishing. If him leaving means we get a good fee and Wilson is promoted, then you won't hear me having any arguments.

Welbeck isn't all that, and that'll be shown if/when he moves

Pretty much sums up my opinion too.

Really hope we don't sell him! One of the few who can stretch and put pressure on the defence on his own. He's also homegrown and home schooled by Ruud and the others. He'll be a link from the last generation to the new guys.
If you look at his abilities on the pitch alone I reckon they're good enough to warrant a place in the squad for long as he wants too, but if the manager has no intention of using him, then of course he should be free to leave if that's what he wants.

We cant sell him but not Hernandez, Ando, Cleverly or Fellaini. That would be just wrong.

I expect there's not the slightest chance of him leaving unless we sign really fast attacking players. His pace will help out Rooney and RVP over the season and while we do have Wilson coming through, he's unlikely to be be played a large amount whether Welbeck stays or leaves.

Would be mortified if he did leave as he's my favourite thats come through in years. You would imagine that his energy and ability to create pressing suits LVG and his philosophy but he does have a wasteful tendency.
A move away might prove good for him though and with regular game time could iron out the inconsistencies in his game, shame he's too old and too good for a loan move.

Don't know why everyone's guessing what Van Gaal said to Welbeck. No one, except Van Gaal, Giggs and Welbeck knows what was said in that private conversation, including the media!

If he's unwilling, or unable to be converted into a winger, or midfielder (maybe), then it's fair enough, although he offers something he's not a top striker, and fair bet to say he never will be.

We don't know the background or if he asked to leave, but to sell Welbz and keep Cleverley, Fellaini, Anderson, Hernandez etc. just doesn't make sense

You think that all 3 of them haven't told anyone else at all? Indirect leaks happen all the time and this seems like another one of them

Spoken exactly like a Van Gaal press conference ;)

Well, people just keep speculating. It's kind of annoying me, to be honest. Who's to say Van Gaal didn't say to Welbeck he'll start ahead of Rooney or Van Persie (not realistic, but just making a point).

Maybe Van Gaal didn't give a definate answer as to what was said in the conversation to prove that the media chat shite (like we didn't know that already anyway). If they are indeed right about the situation, then I wish Wlebeck the best of luck if he's to move on.

Well Van Gaal said that he assumes Danny didn't tell anyone about it because it's private, so I doubt his assistant manager be mouthing off about it either.

Yeah, I hope he won't leave, but if he does I'll be expecting the opposite to you. Won't be exactly a Pogba level mistake, but quite a big one. And I'll be cheering him on too (depending on who he signs for)

Absolutely disgusted if this is true.

Welbeck was one of our best players in pre-season, and one of the main reasons we were playing great, one touch, football. Its absolutely no surprise that our football has gone back to being crap ever since he got injured. If LVG doesn't want him, then I would have serious reservations about the vision he has for the club.

We'd be daft to get rid. We play better as a team when Danny is playing. Ok, he seems to lose all feeling in his legs whenever he gets anywhere near the 6 yard box, but in terms of what he adds to our attack, he's very valuable to us. Plus, in all honesty, I'd be sad to see yet another local lad/academy product out of the door.

Agree I will be gutted to see him leave, and with the other players like Kagawa Anderson Cleverley Hernandez to let him leave and them stay before him is sad. We must be signing Di Maria for this to happen and LVG saying Danny won't get the game time he deserves. This boy has the ability to really come back and haunt us.

Welbeck leaving while the likes of Young, Fellaini, Valencia, Hernandez, Cleverley and Anderson are still in the squad would be an absolute disgrace.

He's probably the only player we can get some cash for who is on the edge of lvgs first 11. Looks like we need to sell before we can buy again.

I think and I may be wrong of course that Welbeck wanted assurances of playing regulary and LVG coulndt give it to him, and Welbeck wants to go somewhere where he will play regulary and not wait for RVP, Rooney or even Chicharito to get injured or carded.

He should be playing regularly. We're a much better team when he plays, as displayed in pre-season.

I agree. Painful watching slow lethargic zombie football with all these numbers 10's when we lack pace all over the team. I'd rather sell Rooney or Mata quite frankly.

I agree.
With him gone we'll have even less pace than before which is awful. That is if we dont sign Di Maria and I doubt we will tbh.
