Right, as compared to your all-knowing judgement.

The flack Hernandez gets on here is ridiculous. I recall him being an integral part of the 2010-11 team, being a thorn in Chelsea's flesh, being an excellent foil for Rooney and Valencia. He's not in great form at the moment but that's what benching does to you. Dismissing his assists as just stats is myopic.

He was great that season. It's his inability to even get close to that level in every season since which is why he is so poorly rated on here these days. Loads of examples of average strikers who have one great season where everything comes off but never hit the heights again.

In fairness, it doesn't matter what he did back in 2010-11. He's never going to have the same impact on the team as he did back then. And I agree that him being benched a lot is probably why his form is terrible at the moment. But do you really see him getting any more game than he did last season? He'll still be a bit part player, and more than likely his form won't improve because of it.

As much as I love Hernandez, keeping him at the expense of Welbeck is crazy to me.

He was really good in 2012-13 as well. Maybe even better that season than his first. He just didn't get as many starts as in 2011.

Not sure it makes sense to get rid of Welbeck. In fact I'm very unhappy.

I am with you

Our only striker with genuine pace and ability to get involved in build up play ?

Think I'd rather hang onto the Manchester boy and sacrifice Hernandez if someone is leaving

He's pretty versatile too. I know folk on here will have a fit, but yeah the Manchester connection means a lot to me, it's such a shame he's not staying on.

I'm not to bothered by this news. Welbeck will never be a regular at United, not if we have ambitions.

Wilson would be able to fill that gap in the squad.

I still remain a bit "meh" when it comes to Welbeck. On one hand, we could hardly ask for a better third/fourth choice striker. On the other hand, I highly doubt he'll ever be good enough to start regularly for us. I'd gladly keep him around, but I wouldn't really be upset if he left.

Also, why does the general notion seem to be that Van Gaal wants to get rid of Welbeck? If anything, I think it's Welbeck himself who wants to leave, and I don't blame him. You need to play week-in-week-out in order to develop as a player, especially when you're soon in you're mid-twenties. He wont get that luxury here, so he might as well go to a midtable PL club and tear it apart there.

He's not played enough upfront to know if he can reach the levels he was at in then 2011/12 season

Most likely scenario seems to be that he is the one edging for a move, as LVG has told him he doesn't see him as a first choice centre forward. Not the end of the world if it is the case, but a bit of a shame, I'd rather he stayed.

I would like to see him at Arsenal than Spurs if it comes to it. Would be perfect for them.

Yea same. I already enjoy watching Arsenal play week in week out, with Welbeck they will be even more fun to watch. Although, I think he should stay here and fight for a spot. When Van Gaal realizes the trio of Mata, van Persie and Rooney has no pace or dynamic movement, he will look at Welbeck to change that. But, if arsenal comes knocking on the door, it will be hard for him to resist them.

Yes, this x100. Knock United out of the equation and it'll be fine. Heck they're main colours are similar to ours, so wouldn't look that weird. Also, if he does leave it'll be a huge mistake, something which those who love both Welbs and LvG will have to deal with.

I've always been one who thought the caf very much overhyped Welbeck but even I can see how stupid it would be to let him go, he's the only striker with pace ffs and is perfect for our system.

I've given up on Hernandez so I'm not including him in that statement

People constantly doubt his top quality due to his goals, which I can fully understand, but there is more to it than that in a poor English team, he has a great strike rate at NT level, that speaks volumes.

Welbeck is a squad player and his career progression has stalled because of it, I'd love to see him loaned to get a full season up top under his belt at a good level, then he'd displace our XI, Robin a year older, question marks over Rooney, he should have gone 2 years ago for personal reasons, since he's still here, he needs to wait until next year as I feel he will really come to the fore.

So are we giving up on this 3-5-2 then? He's been much better than Hernandez in that formation and would've got plenty of games in his favoured position with Rooney and Van Persie's injury records.

Van Gaal talked again about philosophy and how Rojo can play LB or LWB

I still think we will see the 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 or whatever

I thought he'd squash the rumour if there was nothing in it, all LvG's comments have done is feed the belief that it's true.

He was never going to overtake RvP or Rooney in the pecking order as he simply isn't near as good as either of them. I'd have been happy to keep him as our third choice striker but if he wants to be a fixture in the first team then he's gonna have to leave I guess.

From his point of view it would definitely be the best move for his career

From our point of view it would be a bit of a shame but not major loss in the grand scheme of things. Never looked like being more than a squad player for us, despite being a player I liked.

Guess we'll finally see if he really is Sturridge without games. I doubt it but I might be wrong...

Plus, it was always likely that some of the players LvG got rid of would be fan favourites. I'm a bit surprised but not massively.

Maybe he wants more games guaranteed almost like Lukaku? he was making noises last year under Moyes that he wasn't getting enough games upfront and by the end of the year had asked to leave, so if he asked LvG for the same he couldn't guarantee him the gametime he desires either?
Perhaps thats why the guardian newspaper may be correct in that we'd rather loan him than outright sell him.

I would be surprised if Welbeck wasn't pushing for more game time as a striker, he desperately needs it at this stage of his career. Problem is we probably can't guarantee him enough.

I have no clue why we would get rid of him before Hernandez. I can only assume it's because Danny wants more playing time up top than LvG Hans indicated that he will be given.

It will be a sad day if he leaves, but it would probably be the best thing for him, seeing as both Rooney and RvP will be ahead of him in the pecking order for the foreseeable future, pretty much no matter what he does.

Not sure he'll end up leaving though, if we won't sell him to a top six club.

We can guarantee it a lot more than we could this time last year or the season before. It makes no sense to me, unless this is just some powerplay for a new contract.

If we are playing 2 up top then he should get plenty game time either way.

And what's with keeping Hernandez instead ?

One thing is for sure, sell him to Spurs or whoever and he scores on his return to OT.

2 up top means he's competing with Januzaj and Wilson as well. He probably just wants more minutes up front.

Can we? We have fewer games and both RvP and Rooney are favourites of the new manager. We also have a load of #10's still lurking around the club competing for forward spots.

Plus as Welbeck gets older the amount of first team action he wants is likely to be increasing. The best thing for his career right now is to be a first choice player and he's never gonna have that status here.

I think it does make sense, unfortunately.

How can we? Van Persie and Rooney are both still here and the difference this season is there is no european football for rotation. So when would he start, realistically? In the cups? I'm sure he'd be delighted with that.

Maybe van Gaal won't put up with players threatening to leave so they can get a pay-rise so he's going to call his bluff. It's early in his career here & if he buckles then it sets a precedent for everyone else.
I think it would be a mistake for him & the club if he leaves but we all know what agents are like so it might end up happening if nobody blinks.

Januzaj can also play WB when are desperate and is probably a good backup as #10 as well. He'd get plenty game time either way unless we buy someone else.

As for Wilson Welbeck can hardly be afraid of him yet. I mean as good as talent Wilson is he still has to make a breakthrough at that level.

The minute we sell him you know RVP and Rooney will get injured. Just the way United works.

I'm a bit surprised to be honest. If ever a player should be 'happy' with being third choice it should be a local lad at a massive club. Maybe he just wants a raise.

Would be brilliant for Spurs, but if I were United I'd never, ever speak to Daniel f*cking Levy again. Just send him a Fryers kit every time he rings.

I don't know why people are criticising the club and the manager. He wanted to leave last season and most likely again this season. What should we do? Keep an unhappy player?

He's hired a crap agent.

Based on what?
