Just re-read the first few pages. I don't think the tears from some of those posts have dried up yet!

Am I the only one who thinks his overall play and touch are overrated?
The way people talk about it you'd think it was genuinely top-notch link up play, but it's not. And he hasn't got a great touch (as many people used to claim), he's just capable of some great touches.

For me, it's his energy and ability to win the ball that makes up most of his worth. His actual ball skills are nothing special at all. Still expected him to have more goals by now. He might still have a season or two where he hits great form and gets a good return.

Seeing as many of them were annoyed by the fact that RvP seemed to be in a decline and there were big doubts over Falcao, I'm not sure you can even mock them with the benefit of hindsight. For all that he hasn't progressed exactly as we'd hoped, I reckon our CL qualification more secure right now if he'd taken the place in our squad of one or other of our "star" strikers.

It's terribly overrated. Great overall play was what Henry had. Welbeck has good overall play for an out and out striker. He's nothing special when asked to play in the hole or out wide.

Poor man's Muller? Piss poor man's Muller more like. I'd file under "aspiring Kuyt". Maybe one day, he'll find a home on the wing after all and make good on all that overall play of his like Kuyt did.

On what evidence? He's had better service at Arsenal than he would have had here and he's not got more league goals than any of our strikers bar Wilson. Don't give it the "he has been playing outwide" line either, considering he was played through the middle for the first two months and did basically nothing.

On the evidence he's not utterly reliant on the service of others to contribute to his teams attacking football.

Yes, he can mishit a shot while falling over all on his own.
He's not a striker judging by his performances up front and has no place out wide at Utd with our possession based build up play ( if it's to everyones tastes or not )

Welbeck would be absolutely horrendous in our side. We aim to keep possession patiently which inevitably keeps sides in their half for most of the game. That limits space in behind, which pretty much renders Welbeck obsolete because unless he has space to use his pace and power he has no idea how to lose his man the vast majority of the time.

He was one of our most accurate, consistent and involved strikers when it comes to passing the football so would suit our slow build-up play perfectly (in as much as anyone can, with the ponderous way we usually play it)

That's without even getting into the refreshing fecking change it would make to have someone up top who can threaten in behind, win a few headers and generally put a shift in.

Welbeck at least looks like he can play football unlike those two geriatric frauds you've had up front.

No doubt in my mind that we'd be better off if we still had him. LVG's whole reason for getting rid was that he wasn't a 20 a season striker, and well neither is RVP and Falcao on this seasons evidence, but you'd have to think Welbeck would offer us more overall than either of them.

I think we would be better off if we had him but largely because we have no one to play out wide and it would be nice for Ashley Young to have a bit of competition. It would be pointless to have him as a striker as he isn't better than Rooney and despite the dreadful form of Van Persie and Falcao they have scored as many goals as Welbeck and therein lies the crux of the issue with Danny.

And Welbeck will never make it past being a good squad option at a club hoping to compete.
He's made a pretty good contribution to us finishing top 4, particularly when Giroud was out. You can assess the past-it boys at the end of the season.

His best position is still wide left, for me. The sooner he accepts this, the sooner he can become a very good player.

What forward doesn't grow up aspiring to be Giroud's deputy right?
But he's not - he just did a good job filling in. Since you haven't been paying attention, I'll say again he's a good example of the modern flexible forward who can assume a number of roles for the team, think Thomas Muller.

Agree with the first part but a weird example, Welbeck's output doesn't come close to Muller. His best comparison to me is Dirk Kuyt from Benitez's Liverpool teams, a multifunctional player who can play as a forward and have some good games there but usually has a precise tactical responsibility to carry out in most games.

He's not as a good as Muller but he's not a bad buy at 24 for £16m. Arse fans are very happy with him although of course we'd like to see him bury some of those chances v Monaco (should have put us 1-0 after 5min and should have made it 2-2).

Muller isn't a bad comparison, although obviously he's not nearly as good. He'll never be a goalscorer, but he is very sure he's a striker, which is frustrating. As I said above, if he accepts his best position is not as a centre-forward he can become a very good player and will start most games for Arsenal.

He scored 1 goal in 27 league appearances when played from wide rather than through the middle in sir Alex last year, he was actually better going back and doing his job defensively than he was going forward.
Arsenal are lucky in a sense, when he realises he's again fallen behind others for a place up top he's less likely to have a temper tantrum and ask for a move again, as he did here, he'll no doubt realise playing left side for Arsenal is a better option than being the #1 striker for Steve Bruces Hull side or similar.

His movement is horrible, if he could create chances for himself like Muller does his dreadful finishing wouldn't be so much of a problem. He hasn't learned yet how to make himself effective in matches, and I'm not convinced he ever will.

Pah, Wenger's only just started sprinkling the oofle dust... patience my son. (I'm biased because I saw Dannyboy play in the youth cup at Arsenal when he was 16 and he shone among the overhyped dross like Fabian Brandy. Gibbo won it with a fantastic lash from 20 yds).

Perhaps. I'm sure he'll be a better player after a couple of years under Wenger, I just don't see the (much needed) strikers instinct there to take him to the top. Next season's a big one for him, the summer break/ pre-season should do him a lot of good.

He's already made a big contribution as cf when Giroud was out, we'd not be where we are without it.

In the summer when Jordan Rhodes and Shane Long went for 12m and Lukakua was sold for 28, you guys got an absolute bargain at 16m. A home grown player for only 16m to one of our direct rivals who desperately needed a reinforcement in the position? What were we thinking?

Or may be it was a note of gratitude for not allowing Vermaelen to come to us.

Danny is kind of a 'jack of all master of none' kind of footballer. Hardly ever gives a bad performance, also hardly ever Wows you. The comparison to Muller is apt only in terms of his ability to play across the front line, his productivity will never ever come close to the German. A destitutes Mueller, if you like.

If his best asset is that he can contribute to his team's attacking play I dont know what to say. So he can pass and run.

And Muller comparisons..

Welbeck is a good player, but his main problem for me is he has no composure, im never convinced he will bury chances.

He isn't a ruthless finisher, Muller is incredible in that sense. Harry Kane this season is closer to Muller than Welbeck ever will be.

:lol::lol: Welbeck gets so over rated by fans, why can't they accept he's just an average/good premier league player.

Well the Henry comparisons didn't quite work out, so why not try the Muller comparisons :wenger:
