Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

He was crap against Spurs apart from the assist - pretty baffled by that opinion.
By all accounts Walcott was atrocious last night. Welbeck can expect to start the next league game. His 16th of the season. I'd say the move is working out very well for him.
Theo was poor last night, but he's scored in every game he's started this season (three). Our first choice front three is Ozil, Giroud and Sanchez, and I'll be amazed if Welbeck ever gets ahead of any of them. He'll play plenty of games, but his chance to win Giroud's place is gone, and we've got much better players on the wings.

As an Arsenal fan, how would you rate Welbeck so far? The opinions on here from a select few are so skewed as they are serious Welbeck fans and love to berate LvG for selling him. I honestly don't think he's been all that good and his displays have reminded me of his time with us; can look promising one game, only to go back to having a poor first touch and no end-product the next. You would swear we would be topping the league if he had stayed.

Against Spurs, I thought he looked clumsy in possession at times and it was a typical workmanlike performance - bar his good play for the assist. Yet some on here - despite what all the ratings say - have blown his performance way out of proportion. The views and revisionism on here are becoming more baffling by the week. I also find this whole 'he brings Sanchez into the game so well and creates space etc', completely exaggerated.

As you would watch him more regularly than me these days, what's your take and the general consensus amoungst Arsenal fans?

Who's certainly not there on merit.

So, Welbeck wanted away because he was tired of always being benched and being shunted to the wing.

Now, he's shunted to the wing and even benched so that wingers can start in his preferred position.

I could see him just dropping off the radar in a year or two. I'd prefer Walcott up front over Welbeck too.

He'll get more games at Arsenal, as they have a smaller and more injury prone squad. However I don't think there'd be a single Gooner who would have him in their best XI. He's behind Sanchez, Walcott, Cazorla, Ozil in the positions behind the striker and behind Giroud up front. He'll still get plenty of games when others are injured though as we've seen this season.

He should be more worried about next season though. If Arsenal go in for a centre forward (which I assume they will) and he moves to 4th choice in the wide positions and 3rd choice up front the bench will become far more of a home. My prediction is he stays at Arsenal for 3-4 seasons where he slowly drops down the pecking order as they sign more prolific player's. Then around 2018 he moves to a club like Everton or Newcastle where he performs acceptably until his early thirties.

As I thought.

The same Ozil who was better than Welbeck against Spurs and scored a higher rating on any site that I've looked at? The same Ozil who has impressed since his return from injury? Okey dokey.

Ozil was garbage vs Spurs tbh, although played well last night.

Well he scored a higher rating on any sites I have checked. He wasn't immense but he looked more composed on the ball than Welbeck. I guess if you think Ozil was garbage, it says how biased a select few are towards Welbeck on here. I don't think either played particularly well but my god, some on here have been lavishing praise on Welbeck over his mediocre performance. Ozil was class last night in the first half but faded in the second.

I think Welbeck will be resigned to a place on the bench if / when Arsenal have all their front players fit. I guess 'if' is the operative word there.

I tend to base my opinions on watching the game rather than rating sites. I thought Wellbeck did ok in that game but wasn't great, but I thought Ozil was generally poor. The fact he scored a goal would probably skew the numbers on most ratings sites who probably include goals and assists in their ratings formulas.

EDIT: I do agree though that Wellbeck will find himself on the bench once everyone is fit.

I completely agree with watching the game makes better reading than ratings. I very rarely, if ever, base anything on ratings. Unfortunately, when it comes to Welbeck, I have to base it on more than my own opinion, as it's the only way of making a point. From my personal standpoint, I thought Welbeck looked clumsy on Saturday but from reading some of the comments on here, you would swear he ran the show. He wasn't awful and his assist was nice, but I mean, it was an average performance.

You can see why they would go with Ozil ahead of Welbeck. The former has the ability to win games on his own and be an inspirational figure which is what Arsenal need to compete with Chelsea, I suspect Wenger is just hoping and holding for that to happen.

Wonder what the likelihood of Arsenal getting another striker in the summer is? At this moment they probably could do with some who is a bit better than Giroud

Giroud is generally under-rated and we will probably wait for Akpom to be the super-striker.

Yeah, I've found on here in particular a lot of people assumed Welbeck would be the main man when he was sold, and that he'd automatically get his place ahead of Giroud, which was baffling, since Giroud is a far better player. I think it tends to happen though, English players get over-rated compared to their non English counterparts.

I think it depends who Real Madrid sign. The chances are they'll be looking at a £50m+ signing and will dump one of their current squad to accommodate. I think that player will probably be Pogba (with them dumping Illarramendi & Khedira), but if they go all out for someone like Aguero then I can see Arsenal (or City) signing Benzema.

Arsenal are only really desperate for a holding midfielder, after that centre forward is probably a priority (along with possibly goalkeeper/CB).

City have Aguero and a few other strikers, so I'd be surprised if they went for Benzema. He'd be perfect for Arsenal, though.

It's a ridiculous opinion - he nearly lost us the game by HT by failing to track 5 runs by Rose (who luckily was too shite to convert any of his chances into an assist).

I meant if Real went in hard for Aguero, City would probably be looking at Benzema.

So Smalling now has a much better goal to minutes ratio than Danny Welbeck. #bite

Which Ozil have you been watching?

He had one a half a decent involvement, in the build up to the first goal, and a decent finish in the start of the second half.

No idea how anyone can say he was one of your better players on the day. Can only assume they didn't watch the game.

Looking like a bad bit of business to let Welbeck go and bring in Falcao. It's not like Welbeck is setting the place on fire, but he was generally a 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 striker when playing upfront for us, which is no worse than Falcao atm. Plus he actually stretches teams with his pace and is on about 1/4 the wages.

Aye, keeping Welbeck over Falcao might have been a good idea. That doesn't mean Welbeck was good enough either, mind.

Signing Falcao was a gamble which didn't pay off, so in that aspect, it was a bad decision to sign him. Selling Welbeck was the right decision though, and he has proven that he's just an average player (by standards of top clubs). If Falcao wasn't here, Welbeck wouldn't get games too. More likely Rooney would have played upfront.

People need to stop crying. If he was doing a Pogba at Arsenal then alright, but so far he has proven that the decision to sell him was spot on.

I don't think Rooney isn't playing upfront because of Falcao, LvG clearly wants him in midfield. When we're crying out for pace so much that we're heavily reliant on Wilson, who isn't yet ready to start games in the PL, and have even played Di Maria upfront who looked very uncomfortable, I'm not sure how you can argue that Welbeck wouldn't get games in this team.

Yeah, him. Who the hell relies on rating sites for opinions anyway? He was piss poor against Spurs.
Except he wasn't. He was coming back from injury and every footballer knows it really takes some time to find your legs, but he made a great job for the first goal - typical welbeck - doesn't really have goals or assist but did the big part of the goal..

Struggled with tempo little bit and wasn't anything special but made it up with his really immense defensive work rate. He didn't really profited from the defensive approach Wenger chose for the game for the first time in zillion years. I would't say he was piss poor though. Piss poor was Sanchez against Leicester after coming back from injury.

On the other hand I expected a little bit more from him but he's got still time and I am sure he would add to the team much more than Falcao/Persie if he was here and granted to start like RVP or Rooney is..

I was talking about Ozil.

Not really.

It's not like we actually signed Falcao permanently. It hasn't paid off and we'd have £40m hopefully to spend on a world class or someone who has the potential to be. Which Welbeck will never be. He'd always be a decent player.

Falcao certainly isn't the answer and just as much, Welbeck certainly isn't the answer. We need a new striker.

He seemed ideal for the 352, letting him go after seeing him do well in that system still surprises me.
We had abandoned the 352 when we sold him. It only came back a bit later. In any case, IMO Welbeck is best suited to a wing forward role in a 433.

I was talking about Ozil.
sorry then, I thought we are in Welbeck thread and didn't catch the start of the conversation. I don't really remember much of Ozil that game but he scored one great goal and same like with Welbeck, didn't really profited from the passive approach Wenger chose. Whole Arsenal team was poor. He is quite good after the injury and one of their better players tbf..

Do people actually know that a striker can work hard, run the channels, hold the ball up well and still manage to put the ball in the back of the net? This constant complaining about selling one of the most ineffective strikers currently at a big club is nothing short of ridiculous.

It's depressing seeing how good Sturridge is becoming, and when everyone thought Welbeck was just as good as few seasons back.
