Depends what you expect from your front men. For example if Falcao/RvP/Rooney had a game like he did today you would be gutted. With Welbeck because hes not at their level (and i dont think he ever will) this kind of performance is expected against top opposition.

I liked the kid, thought he had good spirit. Unfortunately, in my opinion, he has feet of stone and no real creative skill on the ball. Was not improving either, it seems to me he had reached his limits professionally. Hope he does well and wish him nothing but luck.

I have seen RVP and Rooney have performances like that for United, it happens

He was pretty anonymous. Nothing more than a couple of runs in the channels and a bad tackle at the end. The players behind him created nothing and he ended up doing dog work in midfield. Chelsea are superb at the back

The Welbeck boom and bust cycle begins afresh. Nutmegs himself against Spurs and he's rubbish, then scores a hat trick and he's a god, awol against Chelsea and we're back to square one.

The truth is Welbeck is a good young player in development and will have good days and bad days. However, that doesn't suit the media who want to use him as a weapon against Van Gaal. Press hyperbole trickles down to the fans and you end up with those who want to make out selling him was the worst decision ever, and those who feel the best way to defend Van Gaal is to trash Welbeck.

I'd almost guarantee that he'll net a brace in couple games' time and he'll be getting Thierry Henry comparisons again. If anything, the polarizing opinions about Welbeck seems to have gotten even worse with his move to Arsenal.

I'm a big fan of his, but today was the perfect demonstration of his struggles against a solid, defensively compact side where he struggles to get into goal-scoring positions and his movement is very lacking. Afford him space in behind and he can excel, but I just think there will plenty more anonymous performances from Welbeck against this type of opposition, although there are admittedly none better than Chelsea at executing this style.

The criticism of Welbeck is a bit over the top. He used the ball well when he received it but but he never got the ball in areas where he could have caused Chelsea's defence problems.

The fact is Mourinho out-manuevered Wenger yet again! Arsenal could barely get their passing game going much less create goalscoring chances for Welbeck!
