Danny Welbeck 2015/16

I never thought he'd be anything close to world class when he was here, but someone that would spend most of his career at United providing useful squad cover. In fact most opposition fans constantly said that too, and he was one who was berated for being in the England team simply because he played for United. It all changed when he left us and now suddenly everyone rated him as the next big thing.

However that didnt happen and he left. He's a useful outlet for Arsenal and is one of those players that is a useful(but replaceable) part of the machinery.

He's not good enough to hate imo, unlike say someone like RVP.

This is a guy that scored as many league goals as Fellaini and Smalling last season.

He's a decent squad option at a team competing for the top four. That's why in hindsight he would have been good to fill the role Lingard has played this season (injury aside).

However it was right to get rid of him, he wasn't a youngster anymore and hasn't markedly improved since his loan spell at Sunderland. In his position we need to be looking for young players with potential like Martial/Kane, not players like Lingard/Welbeck (unless they're happy in a backup role).

No, not really.

"We shouldn't have sold him...he's a great squad player". He didn't want to be a squad player and wanted to play up top. There were rumours he wanted to leave even under Moyes.

You sound like Donald Trump. No insight, childish and your only rebuttal is insulting a player. As such, it will be a road to nowhere if I entertain you.
Show me what's wrong in what I have said. Did Danny Welbeck really develop in the past 2-3 years? Is he a good striker?

What's the point of writing an essay trying to explain a simple fact: that Welbeck has been a terrible striker and showed no real development in years (including before the recent injury)? I don't see the point of doing that, especially given how much this very topic has been discussed here.

Not sure anyone really believes Danny Welbeck is anything close to the player at aged 25 that we thought he'd be when he first broke through.

Read the comments from the time when the England NT squad for the WC was announced(your choice of online paper)

And then from when he signed for Arsenal, and the narrative after that.

I agree. He was generally a laughing stock (to non United fans) when he was here but once he left, it seems the media and pundits really started rating him.

Ok Donald Trump. You lost my interest with your initial post.

Nobody is arguing about being good to have in the squad. The questions is is he a top player? The only answer is no. Kane despite being a few years younger is already ahead of Danny on the road to being a top player.

The goal against Leicester isn't a moment of magic ffs.
Yep, the first bit seems to be going over the head of most Welbeck fans. I doubt there's many (if any!) who would say no to have him as part of the squad. No one is denying that.

Iirc, the problem was that he wanted some kind of guaranteed role, up front. So the question is simple really - those who are pining for his return - should we have kept him as our #1 CF to lead the line? No. He's not good enough.

In some people's mind's Welbeck is still 19 and 'promising', not 25 and in his 5th full season as a regular for a CL-level club. He'll get to 26, 27, 28 and there'll still be a constituent of United fans who'll insist we should look upon him as someone who only just graduated from the youth team yesterday.

He's a decent player at squad level for the top sides, not sure he'll ever be more than that.

Its amazimg how quickly people forget. He got the same kind of treatment as Cleverely and was generally derided. He wasnt as bad as they proclaimed him to be tbf.

But then it all changed, with a mere change of club emblem on his red shirt.

What Danny has never been, or was likely ever to be was world class. There isnt nothing wrong with that. But the only way he would have stayed here was as a bit time player, and he would need to constantly look over his shoulder as I believe that the intention at United is to get better quality than anything Danny could ever provide.

best player on the pitch against Everton, joy to watch.

It's lucky for Danny Welbeck his fans have the memory of a goldfish

Yep, looks like what we are missing for sure.

A 180 degree spin and shot is not an easy technique when you're being closed down by 2 or 3 players. Not a terrible miss by any means. Try to do it yourself in the split second he had.

dont bother mate, there is no point....

Future intention? Well, so far he's another example of a United player who left, only to be replaced by worse.

I like Welbeck but Martial at 20 is twice the player. Welbeck doesn't have the composure to be a great striker. With Martial a one on one or a half chance will end up in the back of the net 80% of the time whereas with Welbeck it's probably less than 20%. Remember his glorious attempt at chipping Neuer?

Moral of the story is, if you let players go without getting suitable replacements, it's fair for people to deduce that you probably shouldn't have let them go.

Agree Martial is a better finisher, but you're overdoing it a little!

In PL this season

Welbeck 3 goals from 9 attempts (33.3%)
Martial 7 goals from 43 attempts (16.3%)

Welbeck is on a purple patch, for him anyway, over the course of a 40 game season I am sure his conversion rate would be greatly reduced.
