I don't think there's any other striker better than him at this. Alright, it's a small part of a striker's skill-set, and we need him to get a bit more consistent at the actual scoring part, which he will if he gets the game time.

But it's a nice bonus that every game he wins the ball back a couple of times, often in dangerous positions.

His work rate and pressing ability is up there with the very best. He has the wonderful ability of pressurising keepers and defenders into making costly errors high up the pitch. Its a nice mixture when he's on the pitch alongside Rooney and RVP. The goals will come in time.

Still can't get my head round why people don't particularly rate him here. He has a quality touch, pace and intelligence. He'll go miles further in the game than Balotelli ever will and it won't all be down to work rate, it's because he has genuine quality

Another bit of shit I keep reading is that we're shoehorning him into the team to give him games, as if his versatility is somehow a negative aspect.

I'd say he is very highly rated by most on here. Its only now that he is playing out of position that a few people have come out and said he won't make it. Though they are still in the minority from what I can tell.

For me its a case of he has all the tools except the composure//finishing in front of goals right now. Given time that should come though.

I think he's got a very good chance of winning that; he's been exceptional for England the past twelve months. Here's the full shortlist:

ASHLEY COLE
Chelsea
Defender
2012 Caps 6 Goals 0
Total Caps 99 Goals 0

STEVEN GERRARD
Liverpool
Midfielder
2012 Caps 11 Goals 0
Total Caps 100 Goals19

JOE HART
Manchester City
Goalkeeper
2012 Caps 11 Goals 0
Total Caps 27 Goals 0

GLEN JOHNSON
Liverpool
Defender
2012 Caps 9 Goals 0
Total Caps 44 Goals 1

DANNYWELBECK
Manchester United
Forward
2012 Caps 11 Goals 5
Total Caps 14 Goals 5

I think his only competition is perhaps Steven Gerrard who was the best player at the Euros in my opinion.

I was there at his debut against Ghana. He's really come along for England.

He's not strictly English but nevertheless I think Balotelli would be a good shout for the award. You can guarantee that had he played for England in the last twelve months he'd have caused untold disruption in the dressing room and stormed off the pitch in a sulk after a series of lacklustre performances, and at the end of the day, what more could you ask of a footballer?

I like Welbeck - works hard, gets in good positions and is always a willing runner. But can't agree with that 100% of the time. Still looks a little awkward at times.

I do fear for him to be honest - as I've said before. He won't get in regularly instead of RVP or Rooney who are two of the best forwards in the world and Hernandez seems to have the knack of scoring goals - as a result its going to be tough for him.

He'll always get games, that's a given - but it depends whether he's happy not neccessarily starting in the "big" games over the next few seasons.

I think the fact that he's an England regular know could have an effect - very hard for a manager to pick him if he's not playing regularly for his club - especially as a forward when if you're not scoring, someone else inevitably is.

I don't get this. He rarely looks awkward at all, he's got great control of the ball and has bags of skill.

Those gifs are only glimpses. Overall he still is gangly and awkward at times.

He's got top class technique but he does look a bit clumsy at times, mainly due to his abnormally long legs. That obviously doesn't matter anyway.

I'm pretty sure thats due to the well known fact that he's still growing. He'll grow into his legs soon enough.

Absolute nonsense. He's tall, but he's by no means awkward; he may appear as being awkward due to his long legs, he's gangly, granted, but if you've seen him play and you had an ounce of intelligence about you you'd know that he isn't awkward at all. He has excellent control of the ball, great technique, pace and intelligence, how can you call such a player awkward?!

You're right, it doesn't matter. What difference does it make that he looks clumsy when anyone with a bit of sense knows full well that he's not?

"If he was to try it 10 more times, he wouldn't even connect with the ball. It was a fluke."

Zlatan on Danny's back-heel against the Swedes.

Basically, that's Zlatanese for I've tried to copy it in training but I can't get the hang of it.

And no, Lynk, he's not right. Welbeck scored a very similar one for the reserves.

Ridiculous from Zlatan. I've seen him score at least three like that (it's now known as 'the Welbeck' in our house) and Rooney said after the England one that he's seen him do it a few times in training.

That would be his over hyped overhead kick.

And this is coming from the guy who overhead kicked a ball from 30 yards out against England, could he ever do that again? I doubt it. Anyway, Welbeck hits lots of backheels I could see him scoring a similar goal in a couple of years.

Where is that quote taken from?

Did Danny not score an almost identical backheel goal vs San Marino?

It's ironic that he's come out and said something like that, given the goal that he scored against England. Pathetic that it's also aimed at a 21 year old, learning the game!

Zero respect for this guy after that.

An odd axe to grind from Ibra considering Danny has scored two goals exactly the same as one another using the technique he's making reference to.

Welbeck is up there with any player in the world when it come to flicks and back heals. He can seemingly pass better with his heal than his instep.

Three. Scored one like it for the reserves, too. And judging by comments from other players (and the fact that he keeps trying it), those are only the ones we know about.

Zlatan, u mad bro?

Training with Berbatov can't have hurt. Berba was definitely the world's best back-heeler when he was with us.

Berbatov did love a backheel or two didn't he, that said Welbeck has an extreme love for them. Does anyone remember his backheel assist for Anderson's goal last season? He scored in that match as well, but it wasn't a backheel, shame.

It's depressing seeing him watching every game from the bench considering how shit our other players can play and still continue to start games regulary. I feel really really sorry for him.

Giggs and Scholes have been trying/scoring that kind of goals for decades. I'm sure in training grounds it would have been a lot more of a common occurrence.

Is it really? All three of our forwards have been far better than him this season. Rooney had generally been in decent form lately so of course he was going to start ahead of Welbeck on a day like today.

He has been poor all season himself, unless you count his defensive work on the wing. He does not offer more from outwide than even a poor Valencia.

I think that he will get some game next time round. You have to remember that there has been no midweek games for two weeks so we are not going to rest RVP or Rooney. Today we brought on Hernandez who is one of the best players from the bench that there is and Giggs, who offers more creativity from the wings than Welbeck. We are not going to take RVP off so I really can't see how he would have fitted in.
