Hmmm I stand corrected. In fact Nani was more tucked in than Danny on average.

I agree. Valencia benefitted from playing right back - means he can be used there if need be but improves his defensive work when on the wing massively so him and rafael work we'll together.

Playing Welbeck on the wing gets him in the team on a hard European away and was a learning experience. Him playing some games on the wing will improve him as a player.

I'm not saying we should play everyone out of position and feck about - but it's for the greater good. It didn't work for Welbeck tonight. Even so he probably leant more from that than most other games he's played.

He was poor tonight, but I'm not that worried.
We won the game, he got more experience, and Fergie has mentioned the benefit of playing younger players in multiple positions several times.
I'll just atribute this to growing pains.

1 goal so far this season. He'll be frustrated that he's not getting more chances to score goals, but he's gotta start scoring when he does get games (he's had more than enough clear chances this season) otherwise he'll be bottom of our pecking order.

Dont think there is any need to worry. Look at Chicharito last year. Players dont develop in straight lines, consistency comes with experience and progress can be faltering. Last year it seemed like Chicharito was a one season wonder, he didnt seem to be anywhere near SAF's first team plans, now he is back in the mix. I am sure the same will happen with Welbeck, it might take him a while, he might be back soon, the main thing is that in the meantime we have plenty of other options.

nobody questions his ability and talent, it's the trend that worries me.

Is there a young player coming through who hasn't had a rough run like this?

Evans/Rafael/Nani/Anderson/Ronaldo have all suffered this in recent years.

Remember when Mame Biram Diouf was shunted on the wing and looked shit, well he's banging them in playing up front for Hannover now, so yeah.

You are right, he was playing on the left, and had excellent season.

I could have sworn he played mainly through the middle or on the right.

Could well be wrong mind you.

EDIT: Just looking through the old "Welbeck on loan at Sunderland" thread, and it seems he did play a fair bit out wide left, and was pretty poor out there and got a bit of stick, at least in the early part of the season. It was only when he went upfront partnering Bent or Gyan that he really shined.

Its not really in Welbecks favor to be compared with someone we sold after, yea, looking shite on the wing though is it?

I dont think he will end up like Diouf, for that SAF is investing way too much in giving him game time, but its not good to see him play poorly week in week out. I think he might be starting to feel complacent. He should be benched for some games and work hard in training. He might be tired as well, hes a young player whos played very much this season.

I think given how much he started for us last year people forget he is still young and developing, plus last year he started mostly as Rooney's central strike partner where as this year he's being played wider more often than not.

It's not so much a comparison but a pointer as to how playing in the correct position can make a huge difference.

Been saying it for a while now..Hernandez is the better striker out of the two.

Chicharito has only had less than 2 years to develop with us, Welbeck has been here all his life and Hernandez is still better than him. It'll be interesting to see how much Javier develops with us.

Ferguson obviously feels gametime out of position is better than none at all and fair enough.

The gauntlet has been thrown down by Hernandez who is not going to play on the Wing and is in better form up front so it's really up to Welbeck.

Welbeck and Chicha are 2 different type of strikers. Welbeck right now isn't getting a chance in his natural position.

Chicha is very good at what he does but, you can see that he is never played in any other position that the front striker unlike Welbeck. From that you can see that Welbeck is seen to have a lot more all around ability than Chicha.

Am glad to have both of them - just hope Welbeck keeps his head in the game much as Chicha had to do over the last season. He'll get his chances sure enough.

I think his form is poor for same reason as Nani's, playing excellent in one game, and being benched(or not even on the bench) for the next two or three isn't doing him any good.

I don't know, Fergie knows best about developing young players, but I don't think that things like playing Young after long injury against Arsenal and Chelsea in front of of him are good for Welbeck, especially since he was excellent in game before(vs stoke).

I don't understand people saying Chicharito should be above him in pecking order, since it's obvious him and Chicharito aren't even competition this year because Welbeck mostly plays on the wing, or as a second striker.

I called it before we even signed RvP. I felt this year Welbeck would be getting his game time from the left because of his pace and athleticism.

Even Wayne Rooney used to be played wide left while he was learning the game at United.

Sir Alex seems to like playing energetic defensively sound forwards there while they develop because they can play their game, get involved with play but don't have the greatest responsibility and pressure of needing to be the one to finish the chances.

He's not playing well in an attacking sense so far this season, but he'll come good.

He's not scoring lots and sometimes looks a little lost on the wing but Welbeck's workrate is absolutely ridiculous. It's not just running around either.

He wins lots of tackles and really is a nuisance all game and helps out his fullback.

I'd like to see him start as striker in the remaining CL games and some FA Cup games.

feel sorry for our Danny atm, with Rooney, RVP and Chico all on form he's not getting much game time for us, showed he can still score goals though tonight for England, wonder if he might get a run in the team again soon, though who would we drop atm?

He should definitely start the CL games and will probably come on against Norwich if things are going our way...

Why would you feel sorry for him? He's the youngest of our strikers, he has plenty of time to develop. Did you feel sorry for Hernandez last season?
