He was pretty good, I still think he's totally wasted out wide though, just doesn't suit the position and he was far better when he moved more central in the second half.

Could see him doing well in the front 3, RVP and Rooney dropping deep and wide with Welbeck going central.

Personally I don't see the point in all 3 being on the pitch at once.

They'd all be on the pitch in a diamond which for me is our best formation right now because it provides stability defensively as well as an attacking threat.

I thought Welbeck was poor enough today TBH. He could have easily had a hat trick but was too often late or pushed off the ball. Great header for the goal, but needs to find the scoring boots pronto.

Played excellent today, and that was nice header too.

Disagree, his passing and movement were excellent today. He could have had another goal for sure.

Out of all the attacking talent on the pitch today it was Danny Welbeck who got himself the most number of chances today! If only he could finish a few more.

People seem to have missed that he made an unselfish run away from goal for Van Persie's goal. He dragged a defender that could have picked up RvP when Shawcross fell asleep away.

He was very good today, but people are only fixated on poor finishes.. look at his overall game ffs.

not in the form of his life right now but the movement and the thought is spot on and the goals will come. His work ethic is invaluable to us, especially if we have a midfield of Scholes/Carrick

Stobz, if he didn't score today then he shouldn't be playing the game. He had a lot of chances today to score and as usual with Welback he scores the classy one but not the tap in.

The tap-ins will come.

Every manager has always said that it is more worrying when strikers aren't getting the chances, he works himself into so many good positions that you know he is good for a goal at some point during the 90 minutes.

Contrast this to other strikers who if they aren't scoring might as well not be there. Welbeck does so much good that I will forgive inconsistency in his finishing for now whilst he is still a youngster finding himself.

Overall play is very good, just a little hit and miss with his finishing but even so he keeps knocking them in. He's still only young and will continue to improve as he continues to play, I'm very happy with him.

Welbeck's an interesting one. That curler from outside the 18 was a beauty. He didn't seem to think too much about that type of finish. Seems like he has a bit of the Nani syndrome. Overthinking the simple things at times. For him, it's his finishing.

He gives us so much fluidity up front...players like Danny, Nani, Cleverley are wonderful to watch.

His finishing is really erratic atm, and unacceptably so...needs to continue to work hard on it, otherwise he'll end up costing us in a big match and find himself dropped from the lineup.

Really promising player and already shown so much of his class, hopefully he'll go from strength to strength.

All he needs is practice really. He does a lot of good work on and off the ball. But when his pace or trickery get's him into those positions, he's got to be more ruthless. The least we ask for is that his finishing works the keeper. That's how strikers like Defoe get so many goals.

He was pretty good today. It's irritating that people wrote him off without even watching the match when the lineups were announced.

This.

Can barely even bear to read this thread anymore. It's amazing young players make it here at all to be honest, given the level of criticism directed their way at the beginning of their careers. It's been done to the best of them.

Love Welbeck.

Hopefully he doesn't become like Defoe though and shoot every time he's near goal.

From I've read people were questioning playing him on the left, rather than actually criticising him.

It's a fair view IMO, I wouldn't like Rooney on the left or Van Persie, same goes with Danny. Doesn't change my view on him as a player or the fact he's an amazing prospect, just that he's undoubtedly better through the middle.

Van Persie and Rooney are better than him though and will play up front when fit barring the times when either of them is rested, so Welbeck will have to do with any opportunity that he can get. He's an amazing prospect though and only 21, by the time he's 25-26 he should be a regular.

Nobody in here was critcising him as a player, it's the fact that he is being played on the left whilst we have an actual winger (who is a better player at this moment in time) sitting on the bench. It makes no sense.

Thought he played well today. The movement between RVP, Rooney and Welbeck was great at times and they interchanged and looked very dangerous going forward.

His shooting is frustrating as hell though. We see great shots like the one that hits the cross bar, yet then you have plenty of easy chances that he fluffs and misses or the ball dribbles towards the keeper. Hopefully now that he has picked up the goal his own confident will grow and his shooting will improve as a result.

I don't mind him on the left, he plays well there. I love his bursts of acceleration to run into space. If he can improve his finishing he'll be immense, as his movement is outstanding.

To be fair, he hardly does play on the left exclusively. For the past three four matches he has been interchanging positions with Rooney and RVP.

His movement and overall play has been pretty good, plus he'll always put in a shift.

If only he can shoot better. But he seems to get into scoring position every game. I just hope in a few years time, he will put those away easily.

Definitely good enough to compete with Young, Nani, Valencia, Kagawa and Chicharito for a place in the side. From his point of view, the plus is that he fits in well with Rooney and RVP, who are clearly first choice.

I thought Welbeck was one of our best player in the game. On a couple of occasions in the first half he beat a few players and ran the ball in the opposition box from deep in our half. There was one instance when he made a weak shot from his left foot, which he should have done better with but otherwise there weren't too many clear cut chances for him to score. His overall movement and understanding with our two other forwards was awesome IMO. He was responsible for creating some good chances in the half. Also, the left starting position was only on paper, all our forwards interchanged and confused the Stoke defenders.

I like the fluidity of the front three when Roon, RVP and Welbeck are playing. They cover for each other. One drops deep, while the other goes forward. They help each other out and it's a massive advantage that all three are very unselfish players. They like to contribute as much with assists as with goals. They all defend from the front, which is an awesome attribute for a team to posses. Add Kagawa to the mix and we would have an amazing front four.

Out of curiosity did no-one else think we were denied a clearcut penalty when he had a late tackle arrive on him after he snapped of a shot in the box that went miles off target.

The bad shot has to be expected that the huge lunge from the defender would put him off his shot thus affecting play and which actually was enough contact to completely upend him to practically turn him upside down has to count as a late tackle which in the box must be a penalty?

I had to ask some non united supporting friends of mine on this one was there something I missed as it seemed so obvious yet got no reaction from replays, commentators or pundits at half time

I thought it could've been a penalty at the time but no one made anything of it so I didn't think about it any further. The shot was already away so it would've been soft, but any other area of the pitch a foul would probably be given.

same as my thought. It could have been given as the player took him after the ball was gone. But it would have been a rather harsh call. If it wasn't in the box I'd expect play to be brought back if the ball was lost.

If you're going to say that was a penalty for Welbeck then the one at the very start where RVP got mullered by their keeper after RVP won the header but it was wide was a peno too.

Neither were IMO but I know what you mean.

For reasons that have never really been clear to me referees never call for penalties after the shot is gone, even if the defender nearly slices the attacker in two (see Ashley Cole on Hernandez at OT last season). Anywhere else on the pitch or if the player attempts a pass it's a foul, but in the box after a shot, never. It's an inconsistency in the rules, but it's so ingrained as a convention referees follow that it might as well be a rule in its own right, no point complaining about it.
