Didn't think he was that bad. Had a few half chances thanks to the good runs he made. I guess we're going to see him wide left more often now.

Should have stayed on and Rooney or Nani should have gone instead. Looked far better than either of them tonight.

Tonight he displayed all the criticisms that I got slated for raising earlier in the summer: he doesn't get on the ball enough (23 touches), his first touch is lacking (especially comparing him to someone like Kagawa), he isn't decisive and he just isn't a quick player; pertaining to pace or speed of thought. Apart from that though - he is better than Henry.

He is a good player and has age on his side, but I just don't see the upside that so many on here claim to do.

I don't know how anyone can say he's not quick or doesn't have a good first touch. As for getting on the ball, being decisive and making quick decisions...that's something that he'll develop hugely with first-team football at the top level, surely? His only problem at the moment for me is he's just too tentative in front of goal but that confidence and composure will come.

His first touch is more raw than anything else, still a little bit inconsistent with it. Sometimes it'll be that of a brilliant player, while sometimes he'll be doing his best Heskey comparison. It's something that will continue to naturally improve over time and it'll be good.

He was okay tonight. Didn't make much of an impact but worked hard which is more than can be said for some.

You need to pay more attention.

I thought of all the forwards we played tonight he looked the most likely to do something right. It was a shame he was caught when put through by Kagawa. Honestly speaking he should've had the pace to get to that ball first but he was the only threatening forward we had. Nani, Rooney and Van Persie can't in any way shape or form be said to have contributed more or had a more visible impact tonight. When Welbeck was actually getting a chance to get involved he looked dangerous it was just that the rest of the attack functioned so badly his opportunities to make a mark were very limited. One of the few however who seems to 'get' Shinji's thought process and is able to anticipate what's coming and make the right runs. Unlike some of the others attackers was never caught flat footed when released by Kagawa...

His first touch is like Rooney's; totally inconsistent, and that to me equals a poor first touch. He can run fast when there is open space for him to kick the ball into, but when he has the ball or play is developing all around him, to me, he is close to being slow. At this point he doesn't do anywhere near enough on the pitch for me. I don't feel that we should have started with him out wide either, I am never a fan of a striker playing as a winger, put a freaking winger out there and a full back in the full back position.

tough game for him tonight ... playing on the wing on the counter attack with team mates who were off par. Likewise, an amazing talent he maybe, but alot of his game is still developing, he needs to do alot more work on his 1st touch.

Still will have a great season and come on leaps and bounds this years as he learns from world class players around him.

He was alright, nothing more. I don't think his game tonight really warrants criticism or attention.

Don't agree with anything you've said about the technical attributes, but think he does need to do a little bit more in games and get on the ball more. But, that's not remotely surprising for a young player. He'll grow in stature and confidence in the months and years to come. Maybe he's not quite... nasty enough?

He was okay, in the first half particularly he was pretty much our only threat at getting in behind the defence and on another day might have scored.

a couple of excellent trough balls from kagawa and welbeck reacted very slow to even get away from jagielka, even though he got a few yard headstart. it happen a lot last season as well.

Just seen it on United official page. Great news, a little surprised its only 4 years, but good news all the same

Welbeck pens new deal

Danny Welbeck has signed a new four-year contract at Manchester United which keeps him at the club until at least June 2016.

The Longsight-born striker, 21, has made 64 appearances for United, scoring 17 goals since his debut against Middlesbrough in the League Cup in September 2008.

Sir Alex Ferguson is delighted to have secured the striker's services for another four years.

"Danny has been with the club since he was eight years old and has made fantastic progress in the last couple of years – first out on loan and last year as a regular in the first team," the manager told ManUtd.com. "He has become an important player at international level as well, as the maturity of his performances at the European Championships showed. This year is another important one for him. He has a bright future ahead of him.”

Welbeck himself added: “Playing for United is all I’ve ever wanted to do – it’s the club I’ve supported all my life. I can’t wait for the challenge of the new season to play my part in helping the team compete for trophies. I’m learning all the time from the best manager in the game and I’m keen for that to continue alongside the world class players in the squad.”

Good news. I like Welbeck but you have people like this...

Best piece of striker business this summer.

and I find myself being more critical of him than positive.

You've been that way about him long before you ever read that post...

Ehh...I think he's a raw talent who might one day become very good player. Same with Rafael. It doesn't help when you have people gushing about him, saying he was sensational last season.
