Danny Welbeck | 2011-14 Performances

Somebody really, really needs to make a highlights video from the last match Danny Welbeck started for Manchester United. It was one of the standout performances in recent years, and would have won us the title but for, y'know...

Was that the Everton game? Rooney, Nani and Welbeck were all amazing in that game - it was a sight to behold.

will be an interesting season for him. I am looking forward to seeing him again in an United shirt (as opposed to England), I have a feeling he is going to surprise many again with his progress this year

"In 1999 I had Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the four best strikers in Europe. We are going towards that now with Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney, Robin, Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa.

Should have that contract signed fairly soon...

From David McDonnell on twitter (mirror journo):
Welbeck on RVP: "He's a world class player & it will be a massive boost to the club if he joins. I look forward to playing with him."

I'm confused, hasn't it already been signed?

The papers claim something has been signed or will be soon but there's still nothing on the official site yet.

As for the quote Wowi posted, I saw the interview on SSN and he looked happy. I suppose he could hardly say there that he wasn't happy and wanted out of United but still it's positive.

Good to see him mentioning Will Keane as a first team striker when Stelling asked him about United's options now that we have Van Persie, Rooney, Chicharito and Welbeck Im sure things like this will be a boost for Keane in his return from injury

He's dropped down the pecking order so much he isn't even a Human anymore.

I was talking about his contract extension

So basicaly we've got:
1) Rooney
2) Van Persie
3) Welbeck
4) Hernandez
5) Kagawa (takes up 1 striker slot when played in his preffered position)
6) Keane (injured)
7) Henriquez (probably going on loan)
8) Macheda (probably going on loan, or getting sold somewhere in the near future)
9) Berbatov (probably getting sold)
10) Bebe ( )

We're not exactly short on numbers (or quality) are we, without even adding Giggs, Young and Nani who could all play behind the striker if push comes to shove, and I doubt Anderson and Cleverley would be strangers in that position either.

You're kidding about Anderson right?
am I mistaken in the assumption that he played further forward (behind the striker) before coming to United where he got "transformed" into a CM?
Not that I'm saying we should play him there (especially now with the amount of options at our disposal), just putting it out there.

Playing him, RVP, and Rooney up top together in a constantly changing trio of attackers could be nice...

Sir Alex boosts Welbeck

Sir Alex Ferguson insists the arrival of Robin van Persie will aid – and not prohibit – Danny Welbeck’s development at United.

Van Persie brings to Old Trafford a wealth of experience and success gained at the highest level with both Arsenal and the Netherlands.

And Sir Alex believes the 29-year-old can pass on some knowledge of his craft to Welbeck, just as Eric Cantona nurtured 'Fergie’s Fledglings' 20 years ago.

"You can always learn from great players," the Reds boss said. "Remember what Cantona did for all the young players when he arrived? He was a tremendous teacher for them.

"Danny will learn from playing with Robin, [Wayne] Rooney and Chicharito. I think we have a great combination of strikers now and that's encouraged me."

Welbeck has already welcomed van Persie’s arrival and while the Manchester-born youngster may not feature in every game this season, he’s certain to benefit in the long term by working alongside such a varied array of forwards.

Sir Alex added: "I saw his interview and it was very refreshing. He started talking about scoring more goals – I hope he's right!

"At 21 he's a young boy. He's still growing and has niggles, but he’s going to be a big boy. He won't play every week but when he's 23 or 24 he’ll be a fantastic player."

“I remember it well,” said Welbeck, recalling the aftermath of seeing City wrench the title from United’s grasp.

“We were travelling home from Sunderland on the coach and the manager went around all the young players.

“He said to us, ‘Never forget this – because this will win you titles’.

“He said, ‘This will make some of you into men and be the best you can be’.

“When the manager says things like that to you, you really want to take note of it.

“It’s a good motivation to have. Obviously it was an epic finish to last season.

“Not good for us, but good for the other side of Manchester.”

..

Seems like Welbeck is also maturing nicely as an individual. When he first broke through he always had a tons of confidence but I thought at times it almost bordered on cocky.

He's got his head down nicely last season and had a good Euros and it paid dividends. If only we still had Ole around to coach him personally on finishing.

Welbeck should be the prototype united/ferguson player. hugely talented, given a chance to show his ability then taken away from the limelight to protect him, overhyped initially then slightly under rated afterwards, always rated very highly by fergie/ the club but always seemed to have the self confidence/ ability/not intimidated by playing at first team level. As far as Ive seen in recent years these seem to be the things United want to test in a young player and the way we are developing players now the players coming in seem to be ready for 1st team football and not overrawed by it e.g.Lingard and Januzaj albeit in friendlies always looking for the ball and looking confident on it

And you'll keep hearing fans worrying about this or that player's playing time.I've never understood the skepticism of signing RVP which made/makes some fans about wonder about Welbeck and Chicharito.

Anyone other than Welbeck or Chicharito? Yeah I can understand for sure. This day and age where paid-for strikers are at most clubs.

We're lucky in the fact that we have Rooney who bleeds United, Welbeck who's grown up with United and is loyal and wouldn't dream of disappointing. Chicharito who's dream was to play for us and was blessed with a good season and then a less than great season in which to teach him a lesson to get his head down and work hard.

Berbatov is almost the same as he hasn't moaned about playing time he is just getting on with it.

I think people get carried away with the whole 'disrupting the forward line' argument, however we're blessed with 4 guys who all have the attitude and the scope of just what playing for the club means on the whole in their veins. Bringing in another one who also has a hint of that? I think he's been played well by SAF.

Brilliant. Can't wait till kickoff. I have a really good feeling about this season. The Van Persie signing seems to have given the team a much needed lift and brought back that buzz factor, something we haven't had since Ronaldo left.

The young players like Welbeck and Cleverley will only be better than last season and im quite certain those two will become regulars for us sooner or later. This year, all they need to do is just perform when called upon and we will be fine. Would love to see Danny bang in a few more goals because so many are due to him not finishing very well. He gets into so many good positions all the time.

As long as we can avoid the injury bug (thats already decimated our backline!) then we will be in a good position to get back our title.

Is that a serious comment?? he has been a great player for us and hope that continues for a lot of years yet but he most certainly does not bleed Man United

:lol::lol:

Anyone who can still say this after the debacle must love Rooney. His kid wears an Everton kit, and he goes to Everton games. He definitely doesn't "bleed Untied".

He pledged his future to us, we've known he was an Everton fan since day one, what's wrong with you? You don't have to be a United fan to play for United, nor do you have to be one to actually care for the club, which he does.

He pledged his future to the club after trying to move, and calling us unambitious. Allegedly, he tried to move to City. He/agent doesn't matter, but if that happens, there is no way he can "bleed United".

Essentially - it was "here's all this money" and he signed. If no money, he wouldn't sign. He doesn't bleed United. I never said you had to be a fan to play for the club, so I don't know what the rest of your point was about. So.. you ask what's wrong with me, while ignoring my point, and making another one that I didn't even mention. :wenger:

You're making it out like he'd spit on the club given half the chance. That's what the "What the hell's wrong with you?" was about.

The allegedly moving to City is a non-point, why did you even add that? It doesn't make sense to bring up speculation.

Again with the last point, all fecking speculation. If you know him personally then by all means tell me what motivates the man and I'll listen, but you know about as much as him as I do, and that's feck all. So you have to go on facts.

The fact of the matter is, he's at United right now, and his statement wasn't "Unambitious", it was "Our ambitions don't seem to match", there's a difference in that one is an insult. He seems to love it here, he's good with the staff, the other players and the fans and grafts like a motherfecker for us. How is that not bleeding United?

pretty sure he's got both.
and I don't find anything particularly wrong with keeping a good relationship with the club that brought you up, but maybe it's just me that doesn't see this as having "less love" for United, but rather as showing respect and having a good relationship with the team that "made" him.

Well you know as little about it as I do, so we have different opinions. For me, any player that "bleeds United" - which is the exact phrase used, does not act the way Rooney did. Simple as that.

I actually like the fact that he is an Everton fan - my point is it has been stated many times that he is an Everton fan by other players/media. I don't see how you can "bleed" (exact words used) before anyone jumps on me - two different clubs.

fair enough, you may be right, but I still think he loves United and he's said it himself over a dozen times he wants to stay here for a long time.
ALTHOUGH for instance RvP did state just 1 year ago that he wants to win trophies at Arsenal, not anywhere else, as it wouldn't feel as special, it wouldn't be "his" trophy or something along those lines, Wilshere even said he'll always be a Gunner, let's wait and see how long it takes for him to change his mind :) (honestly though unless it'd be to United I wouldn't want him to move, and even then it'd feel a bit like robbing Arsenal)

And I've just realized I've gone completely off topic

Our Danny has so much talent, but does he have the right mentality to fulfill that talent? I think he needs to be more aggressive, and sharp. There were a few times where I felt he looked surprised when he got the ball. I think if he can be more decisive especially when going for the ball, he'd be really surprised at how many more balls he can win, and turn it into a goal scoring chance.

I thought Welbeck looked our most dangerous attacker and looked most likely to score while he was on, so I'm not sure why he's getting so much stick in other threads. But he seriously needs to start hitting the gym. He goes down after minimal contact, not because he's looking for a penalty, but because that minimal contact is enough to take him down. If he were physically stronger he'd probably score alot more goals.
