He tries backheels and flicks pretty often. They've come off to good effect on a number of occasions. I'm sure he didn't particularly pick out that spot with his flick, but it's pretty clear his intention was to flick it towards goal. It was a superb piece of invention.

How much did we pay for this kid?

Huge potential and a brilliant future ahead.

The knock is that he doesn't finish chances as clinically as he might, but then neither did Andy Cole and his career didn't turn out too badly. Like Andy Cole he gets those chances by his intelligent movement and good build up play. Not everyone can finish as clinically as Ole or RVN.

And what teachers this boy has had from RVN guiding him as a boy, to Ole's training young strikers at the club, to learning from Michael Owen and Rooney and Berbatov in practice. That's about as good a collection of striking talent to learn from as could be hoped for. Sometimes I think you can learn more from a player like Michael Owen who has lost his pace, but can still find ways to poach goals through movement and technique, than you do from players still at their prime.

Oh, and the back heel was clearly intended. As Olly's gif shows he plants his feet to execute the back heel before the ball reaches him.

I cannot think of a past player like him. Shades of Berbatov but they are not that similar. He's so unique.

Has has probably lost the ball 3 times in the Euros. Ridiculous player.

His loan to Sunderland never turned anything round to be fair. He's looked absolute class since he appeared in the youth team, and just got held back a bit by his physical development. By the time he went to Sunderland it was fairly clear he was going to be a very good player at some point.

I've either had or witnessed several arguments on here with people who thought he was shite or wanted us to swap him for inferior transfer targets as if he's some kind of panini sticker. You lot worry me sometimes. A lot.

If not for the Sunderland loan he would not have been given the same chance early on in this season. It helped a hell of a lot.

I think he's trying to say that, for those who paid attention, Welbeck's success at Sunderland was not a surprise nor was did he make as big a leap in his game while there as some suggest, it was simply the fact he was scoring in the EPL that gave him the extra attention.

It was a bit of a surprise considering his spell at Preston. And it certainly gave Fergie a decision to make at the start of the season.

If not for Sunderland he would not be playing for England right now IMO

I completely agree with Noods. I always knew Macheda was slow but Danny looked a little lightweight and the sporadic showings of brilliance (i.e. The Stoke goal) weren't enough to make a definitive decision.

Flip a coin on them prior to the Sunderland move.

Then when I watched him at Sunderland it was so obvious to see his talent. His smarts, his ability and his developing skill. That's a perfect example of a young player having a loan move pay off.

He did fill out a bit by the time he was at Sunderland, I think that allowed him to improve his game. He was always a bit lanky and was prone to the odd awkward movement.

Personally im a bit disappointed but this outlook from Roy. The time is right to be building a new, young England team to lead the charge in 2014 and beyond, and Danny is one of those just coming into his prime years, who should be a regular in the first XI as a result of that, along with Hart, Wilshere, Smalling, Jones, AOC etc.

Im all for not building them up to knock them down, but Danny and co. are the players who will be representing England for the next decade, they should be getting as many international games under their belt as they can at this age to grow and gel the team together.

The future for England in an attacking sense seems to be secure. With Wilshire, Cleverley, The Ox, Welbeck and Rooney all got years in front of them and exciting talents. I think Roy is right not to heap pressure on the lad, and should talk him down. I still think he'll play a major part in all of Englands games.

It's good he plays it down. Your press had the tendency to mercilessly over-hype players after just one good performance for your national team.

Taking pressure away from him is the right thing to do
.

with the caveat that he still gives him game time.

Correct.

What Roy said was (along the lines of) "I will use him as Sir Alex does, sparingly."

That is what doesnt fill me with confidence. As far as im concerned, the likes of Defoe and Crouch should never get a game unless Welbeck, Rooney, Carroll, Sturridge and Walcott are unavailable.

Well but was SAF really using the lad sparingly this season? Imo he almost always got the starting spot next to Rooney when he was fit.

I can only remember a few occasions last season where he was dropped due to very bad form or because we changed our tactics.

So far Woy has also done the same. If he is fit and in form there is no way to see past him unless he really is idiotic enough to let Carroll play next to Rooney next game but even Woy must be smart enough to know it's an advantage to play two strikers who already play together for the same club.

Danny has played 2 (almost) full games. Carroll only one. I think Hodson will therefore "rest" Danny in the next game. Does not mean he would not play in the QF if England progress.

It's obvious to Kenny, so there can be no doubt.

Even Kenny Dalglish acknowledged that Welbeck’s finish was intentional.

“It’s sad that some people are questioning whether Danny Welbeck’s flick for the winning goal against Sweden was deliberate or accidental,” he said. “It was obvious to me and I would have thought most people that it was quite simply a wonderful piece of skill.”

Hadn't seen this photo before.

Flicking the ball in with your instep/heel when the pass goes behind you isn't the most difficult of skills (I've done it myself and I'm shit) but look how high the ball is when he makes contact

That makes it a much more difficult and impressive goal than I first thought.

He's trying to stop and turn around, he had a very good angle on Welbeck really, can't blame him for not using the pirouette backheel clearance, though I don't think he could have reached it anyway.

Not that he doesn't look silly in the pictures!

Mellberg probably got his mind on how many trees he's going to have to cut down in some swedish forest to make the new IKEA Jängötten furniture. Scruffy man.

In Mellberg's defence, it would've been mental not to attempt to block the shot across Welbeck's front. Not surprised he looked like he didn't know what day it was after that sort of finish.

In a way it made the cross even better the fact that it went behind Melbergs advance. Even though there is no way it was intentional.

At that pace theres not much more Melberg could have done. I don't think anyone really expected a finish from Danny there. Stunning stuff.

The more I watch it the more I can see a little swerve before it reaches his heel?? Probably trick of the gif.

Be great to see an animation of Danny's goal the other day along side one of Nani's against Bayern in the CL a couple of years back.
