Danny Welbeck | 2011-14 Performances

This is the thing when playing him wide. He needs to be given more free role and more instructions to run behind the defence, like in the first half. In the second half he wasn't half as good as in the first because again he was obviously asked to stay more to help Evra defensively first.
Anyway, excellent performance.

Not been the biggest admirer of him but tonight he brought a different edge to Uniteds game that we had been seriously lacking.

Good performance from Welb$. Probably a bit of a waste for him personally playing that role at this stage of his career. I don't think that Sturridge has any more in his locker than Welbeck but Danny is unlikely to get the chance to prove that at United.

He's exactly what we need in the team - Gaz was spot on there tonight.

I want a Gif of that moment when he used a bit of skill to dribble past 2 players. I think he would make a decent midfielder in the right setup. Much like Di Maria is now at Real

To be fair, anyone with any semblance of football knowledge should have realised he should have started on Sunday.

I'm not on about Sunday, just in general we need his pace.

Not everyone recognises it either, if you look at the match thread from the Liverpool game everyone thought the line up was perfect.

On paper the Januzaj/Rooney/Mata trio behind RVP is our best line up, but as Neville says it isn't about just sticking your 11 best players on the pitch. You need a balance and Welbeck gives us that.

With Rooney, Mata, RvP and Januzaj, we don't really have anyone stretching defences and providing a threat in behind, which is exactly what Danny provides.

One of those four will have to leave or accept being on the bench for us to put out a balanced XI more often.

He may not be technically gifted as RvP, Mata, Rooney and Adnan. Most importantly Welbeck gives us pace and movement. He also makes space for other players with his movement.

The Liverpool game was when this really became blindly obvious. The contrast between Pool's attacks when they just constantly had Sturridge running in behind, turning our centre backs and making them shit themselves, and ours where it was all balls being played into feet in front of Agger and Skrtel who just stood their ground and let our attacks fizzle out.

We need that mix, that threat in behind the way Pool had Sturridge, Suarez and Sterling.

Did a very good job with his runs and dribbling. Worked back well too. Another good performance in the face of those who say he cant play from wide.

His pace and ability to stretch defences give us a different option. He commits defenders with his quick feet and direct running, surely he does a run in the team now. I would definitely start him against City and in Europe, been a big plus point for us this season.

Where's Lynk?
Here.

Positives:
Streched the opposition defense
Worked hard all night
Showed great feet in one run in particular

Negatives:
Should've scored with that through ball, but RVP scored that free kick, so oh well.
Thought his general play went down a level in the second half.

7/10
One of our top 5 players on the night, although I'd put RVP, DDG, Giggs and Rooney ahead of him.

To think that he was so criticised even though he is definitely one of our best players this season. In our top3 performers this season IMO.

Out of context but..

England should line up with Welbeck - Rooney - Sturridge in the world cup. I think it will cause a lot of teams huge problems.

Sterling - Suarez - Sturridge combination.. essentially.

Moyes learnt tonight what a big game player Danny is. He'll be playing next time we face up against Liverpool, no doubt about that.

Mick or Rene could have told him that, mind you.

Great game from Danny tonight. Work his socks off as usual. Was a constant threat in behind too.

As a team, we weren't even at our best tonight, but it just goes to show how important it is to have speed in your side. This is what Liverpool killed us with last week, and how they've been punishing teams this season.

Tonight, although I've seen better games from Danny, he was able to stretch Olympiakos's back four.

We need to try and find the right balance in the Premier League. Maybe Mata and Welbz on the wings? We do need someone who will go in behind, though.

Good game Danny.

Needs to start more games. He's our best wide option on the left, with Januzaj offering impact from the bench.

Some big performances in the CL knock-out now with this and Madrid, that's a good sign.

That offside "miss" was on target and was only stopped by an Olympiakos defender handling it on the line. Had the play not been called back, we would have got a penalty and a red card for one of their players.
