Did great when he came on. Finally starting to score some goals consistently, but he'll go right back on the left or on the bench when RVP gets fit enough to start. Been great this month though. He's a bit useless on the left which led to everyone criticizing him and his lack of form or confidence, but up front he's much better. The chance he scored today, he would have made a mess of a few weeks ago probably. Shows what a bit of confidence can do.

Improved us so much when he came in. Took responsibility, kept hold of the ball and ran at their defence. Single-handedly won us the match today.

Like others have said, he contributed not only the goal but the lift our attack needed in the second half. Played with so much fluid and confidence it's great to see.

Is he going to fill out more like a Drogba, or he's gonna be a lanky stick figure ala Kanu?

He's a Liverpool fan I think. Best ignored

If he impressed me i would say, i'm not delusional enough to disregard talent even if its on a rival team, just didn't think he did much. United sat back for the most part after the goal, so i'm not saying its his fault, but i don't think anybody apart from the defence were anything above decent.

No, people being clueless twats is why they were criticising him.

No, he was shite most of the season up until he started playing up front. He was lacking confidence, not even looking like he'll make or get in a chance, and generally falling over whenever he got in the box. He was rightly criticized, just like Cleverley was, and Young has been. Just because he's playing brilliantly now doesn't make people clueless twats for criticizing him when he was in a terrible patch of form.

♫Oh Danny boyyyyyy
Actually I don't know the resttttttttt♫

Yes it fecking does. You were all saying he isn't good enough for the club and never will be, that is nothing to do with form.

He was solid but unspectacular on the left earlier in the season after scoring two when playing as a striker, his primary position where he has a decent record playing for England, and came back very rusty after a month long lay off and people like you used the opportunity to vent like a bunch of whining children.

He plays as a striker, he holds the ball up and chips in with goals. Exactly how his 'supporters' said it would be. You lot embarrassed yourselves writing him off. Young players go through lulls, it's a fact of life.

excellent today. was different class to others going forward. an element of luck that led to his chance but that was a good finish.

He's clearly more confident now which is great to see. So hopefully when he goes back on the left he can play with more attacking intent and do well with the chances that come his way. It good to be reminded of what he is capable of when played upfront though.

I always said I'm not sure if he has it in him to become a starter for United long term, because of his lack of a killer instinct. I'm still not sure, he needs to show this form for a lot longer then a few weeks to get to that stage. That's not a slight on him, because if you look back at our strikers over the years, you have to become a world class player to start for United consistently up front. Cantona, Cole, Yorke, Rooney, Van Nistelrooy, Van Persie, etc.
Can Welbeck get to that level of play over the course of a whole season? That's what I was always arguing at least. He shouldn't play on the wing, because despite Sir Alex playing him there often, he can't really do a job there, as most of the time it's nothing more then work rate from him out wide. Also with RVP coming back soon, it wouldn't surprise me to see Moyes put him back on the bench or on the wing after one ineffective game and then Van Persie make that spot his own, because he's just a better player. That's the problem. He can't get consistent games up front to develop properly unless Rooney/RVP are out.

He's got a pretty good physique as it is??

Yeah, he's a big strong lad, he just needs to learn how to use it fully to outmuscle opponents and shield the ball. He can be a hell of a player if he learns to use his body properly, because he's really quick and seems strong. Just needs to stop falling over so much.

Monstrous. The guy is huge. So good at holding the ball up, and has deceptive bursts of acceleration.

He's the best at high pressing. How many times does he win the ball in the opponents half? No need to answer. The answer is feckloads.

Btw, has anyone else noticed that his passing has improved a lot lately? I am not talking about his usual one touch passing, but longer passes to the wings, and behind the defence.

It's really a crime playing him out on the wing, he's looked class any time he's played up front.

Only one way to find out... He isn't the first young player to have a rough patch, but I remember how promising the Rooney/ Welbeck partnership was when Welbeck was only 21 and he's getting to the point where he's reaching physical maturity now. People needed to be patient.

There is value to playing him on the wing, he's getting game experience and playing facing the goal. His problems are that he likes to play with his back to goal (and we're seeing that he's getting comfortable running with the ball facing goal now and playing more passes forward) and he lacks composure around the box for United- which can be improved by practice in training and more big game experience.

The attributes were all there for people who were willing to look to the medium-long term to see, it's just that people are too knee-jerk and short sighted.

Agree with you, I think he should have had a loan last season when Rvp came though. Would have helped him more to have a lukaku like loan, even half a season, rather then play once every few games on the wing and be in poor form most of the year. Hopefully he keeps getting games up front to develop properly as he's improved massively this month alone.

A Liverpool supporting friend of mine used to always hum the fresh Prince theme song every time welbeck touched the ball. I can't get that Damn tune out my head now every time he is on the ball

No surprise that he is scoring goals now that he is playing his preferred position upfront. A shame we need to stick him on the wings sometimes but he is a top lad and always does a job for us.

♫Oh Danny boyyyyyy
Actually I don't know the resttttttttt♫

Oh Danny boy, the cnuts, the cnuts were calling
Aye, for your head, it really was a farce
Now summer’s gone and RVP is dying
‘Tis you, ‘tis you who now must save our arse.

I agree. A lot were writing him off and not criticising his form. There's a difference there.

Yup - MOTM without a doubt. I actually though Smalling did well today as well - today it was Evans struggling defensively.

But - how many times has Rooney been involved in our goals against ? Is it 4-5 this season ? He has been brilliant offensively, but he has been a nice combination of unlucky and poor in our goals against

If you failed to see that Vidic was man of the match today, then you don't understand the game. Good sub though, felt like we would be far better with Welbeck on for Giggs.

I searched back through the thread, it was some clown called FergusSon or something like that. He was an arrogant twat and was beyond adamant he would score 20+, using some bollox logic.

I said I think he could score 15-20 you child.

Looks on course for it too.

fecking love this guy!!!!

I've always rated him and stood by him and defended him...Although, understandable the frustration people had with him as he's a great talent who sometimes never showed it with his end product!

Would love him to develop into the main man here

Where do you guys see Welbecks long term position being for us?

Right up top, think he can offer us something very similar to what saha did for us in 2006/07. Got a feeling RVP will have a huge battle towards the end of this season to keep his place if i'm honest.

Thank god for the fresh prince today. He was a breath of fresh air when he came on and genuinely was the only attacking player that looked 'United' today. He exudes confidence and a genuine desire to do well for Manchester United. Love the kid

It's a pleasure to see Danny doing so well. Really changed the game for us today, and is really starting to look like a player we can rely on consistently now.

Where do you guys see Welbecks long term position being for us?

Definitely up front. It's his natural position, and if he can improve his goalscoring then he'll only get better.

Despite his improved form though, I wouldn't be surprised if he does end up being shifted out wide again once RVP returns from his injury. I like Welbeck and he's displayed massive improvement, but RVP will probably get back his place and Welbeck's time up front might be quite limited again. Will be interesting to see what happens though.

Changed the game today. Excellent to see both him and Rooney in form - should cause trouble to any team the way he's performing at the moment. Just glides past players with his pace - makes it look so easy.
