With van Persie out for a month, Welbeck put in the perfect performance today. Has to keep it up though otherwise the same questions will be asked.

No surprise that he's twice the player when played in his natural position.

Some of his link-up play today was exceptional. The movement from him is so intelligent. And today, he got the finishing right today as well.

That was today right?

Played in his favourite position and looks twice the players, just like Kagawa. Surprise, surprise.

Hopefully that will shut a few people up. He's a quality player and he's only going to get better. 23 years old.

I still can't believe some people want to get rid of him

Actually gets a chance to play up front for once, and produces. Always get annoyed when people talk about his totals.

A nice double after the Swansea double.

If he could get a hattrick that'd be huge for confidence.

Not playing upfront upfront is no excuse for him not being a threat from out wide. Wide players do score goals too. He just doesn't have the attributes to playout wide imo.

I agree, it will be good to see him upfront a bit more.

Been so good today that he apparently scored for Swansea too

I love his movement and link-up play when he's upfront.

His finishing can be infuriating but as a team, we look much more fluid going forward when the others are playing off him.

Been critical off him in recent weeks but he played well today and gave the sort of performance we need to see more off. Confidence and decisiveness around the box. He's always had the ability just needs to show the mental strength to impose himself more.

That was just a really positive display.

Very much one to file under players you take for granted until you lose them.

Supplies a very different thread to Van Persie with his pace and athleticism.

Led the line superbly considering how deep Rooney was today, we always look far more threatening with pace in behind.

That really was a Welbeck performance from 11/12. He had to take his chance, with Van Persie out.

Well done, Welbeck.

That burst of acceleration for his second goal was brilliant

Someone needs to take RVP's responsibility for scoring. If Danny was waiting for his chance this is the right moment.

Pretty much exactly what I wanted to see from him today, with RVP out. Hopefully his two goals today will kickstart a bit of a scoring run for him over December - and hopefully he will be allowed to play central for the upcoming matches.

Yup. It's why he played so often during his first season on return from his loan. His style of play encourages good football.

He's a different player when he's up top.

He's a striker, it's that simple. Still needs to work and improve his finishing, but it won't happen if he plays on the wing.

He's a far better footballer when he plays up top. Does a job out wide but he's not a winger. Delighted for him today, this is what he's capable of. More of the same please.

Happy for him. If he keeps it up, we have a good chance of taking all the points during RvP's absence.

Great to see him play like that. Like many have said - he's too nice. Today he got a bit nasty and physical, and acted up when there was any confrontation with the ref/one of the Villa players. Sometimes it seems he doesn't realize that he is so massive & strong, capable of bullying anyone. If he showed that he had a pair of balls every week, we'd have a hell of a player on our hands. Probably our best one touch player after Nani and Giggs - great flicks.

Terrific performance. Clearly he is a centre forward. He has sacrificed for the club and the team by always playing out of position. However, he clearly has the raw attributes to be a top notch striker. Just needs to take his chances. Could have had a hat trick today.

I think he can become a very good striker. He already has a great skill set, but it's his finishing that needs improving. He's lacked composure in a few games this season, I think he should have scored against Chelsea, Liverpool, and Cardiff, but he has looked better this year in comparison to last year.

His dribbling, passing, movement, hold-up and link-up play are fine. He was a one of the few reasons why we played some great football in 11/12. It's why I prefer him to Hernandez. I like Hernandez, but he's not capable of the performance Welbeck put in today IMO, unless he gets involved more.

Statistically, he's scored 5 goals in 8 starts. Overall, he's made 11 appearances. His conversion rate in the Premier League this season is 22%, while in the Champions League it's 100% - due to him playing just one game, against Shakhtar Donetsk.

That 2nd finish was top quality, the pace of his run into the box made the goal. Very positive.

he was outstanding away at Swansea as well......

lets see if he can put a run of games together

as good as he was Villa were pathetic today

Amazing how a goal or two on top of another good performance changes peoples perception. When/if he can find these goals, he is going to be a special player.

Amazing pace also, just drifts past players with ease.

His biggest problem is having RVP and Rooney in front of the quenue for one centre forward position, his favourite.

He is obviously not a good enough winger though, center forward is where he should always play.

Yup.

To add to that, in general, I dont agree that by playing on the wings, centre forwards cant effectively drift inside and be great goalscorers. Ronaldo and Henry proved this. But in Welbeck's case, he simply is a better centre forward playing further up.

Big game from him, and great to see him getting on the scoresheet. Some of those back heels and flicks around the box were great to see. really hope he can go on a bit of a scoring run now and really build his confidence up while RVP is out.
