We have a quite a few players that need to be shown the door but Welbeck certainly isn't one of them.

He's very talented and has the ability to impact games at the highest level already despite being a long way off his peak.

On his obvious major weakness; at least he didn't scuff it like usual, he actually caught it cleanly for once! Also good to see him get into the position in the first place.

huh?

Welbeck wasting super chances having come on as a sub, is becoming a pattern. Against Soton he should have put Rooney through on goal but a poor touch allowed the defender to make a tackle. In this match you'd expect a United forward to get a shot on target from that position. I've been very disappointed by Welbeck's form this season. After his goals against Swansea I expected him to hurt teams a lot more.

If you're a striker and you can't get your shots on target, then what the hell are you on the pitch for? I like Welbeck, I think he's got a good all round game and contributes to our play. But for feck sake, just hit your shots on target. How difficult can it be? He had time and space to aim a shot on target there and still fecks that up. I honestly don't understand.

Anyone suggesting we should get rid should be put down for the greater good of humanity.

That said, you could perhaps excuse the miss today and point to the fact he's rusty had it not been a frequent problem in his game.

When this guy gets into a serious goal-scoring position, am I the only one who just sits back and waits for the goal kick?

I wait for the goal kick all the time, since we are hardly creating something.

I must have missed something here?

What were these easy chanvces he missed today? He nearly got on the end of a Giggs ball he had no right to reach, then had a tricky half volleyed chance he basically created for himself go over the bar.

He was our brightest player when he came on. Rooney was the one guilty of fluffing an open goal.

Planet Redcafe is orbiting very far from the Earth this season.

no.
rusty?? when has Wellbeck not been rusty? He plays better for England..that is what is frustrating. Lindgard and Henrique will be more productive. Hernandez does score the odd goal that saves us...but he also has many fruitless games. I am not hoping he leaves. But I doubt he will stay tbh.

Eh? Get rid of 2 strikers? With RVP in his thirties?

This pretty much. Would be madness to get rid of him also when Hernandez seems unsettled. Henriquez and Keane aren't ready so we'd need to spend a decent amount getting in a striker when we should be prioritising midfield and LB.

He should have got his shot on target but it wasn't a sitter. I actually thought it was going in so I was desperately disappointed to see it flash over the crossbar. Decent effort but I agree he should have at least got it on target. Some need to take a step back.

This.

People automatically go into blame mode, and Welbeck is an easy target.

Welbeck is not the type of player you bring on to change a game through a goal... he is not clinical enough. He does however change a game through his influence in terms of strength and ability to carry the ball in difficult situations. Missing chances is just typical Danny, why the extra criticism today.

I think it's more the fact that him missing is a regular occurrence, and we are more waiting for the time he gets a shot on target. All players miss the target, he is just missing it a lot for a person who is supposed to actually hit the damned thing.

I definitely blame Danny. Who told him to go charging into the box and confuse Rooney in that final chance. Its not like he'd have scored anyway. If he wasn't there Rooney would've just slotted it into the goal instead of getting confused.

Welbeck has just come back from injury and you expect him to finish goals like Ronaldo? What is it with you people.

I don't know why people are getting worked up over that miss today. He struck it well and it was only a little over the bar. If any one should be getting the blame for missing a shitter, it should be Rooney, when he got caught in to minds between passing and shooting himself when one on one and totally messed the chance up.

If anything I thought Welbeck did decently when he came on, he got in better positions today than Hernandez did the whole match. Lets give him a few weeks to get back up to speed after his injury before we start scapegoating him.

At this level, when you're in that kind of position, he should be hitting the target at the very least. I don't care if he's been injured for months. If you can't hit the target and work the keeper from 5-10 yards....

How can you strike it well but hit it over the bar? Sounds like a shit finish to me.

I thought he and Giggs made a huge difference. Before they were on we barely created chances but with Giggs' passing and Welbeck's movement in from the left we should have killed the game off.

You've summed it up pretty well I reckon.

Would've been a hell of a goal if he scored that chance, loved the link up play between him and Rooney there.

Erm...

I think some are going a bit overboard with the criticism, but this is the caf excuse for just about everything.

I've made the point a few times that we make far, far too many excuses on her for our players not performing, wheras when it comes to judging an opposition player, such variables are not considered when criticising.

If you read the caf, you will soon learn that a United player can only be criticised for his performances if he is older than 20, has been in the first-team for at least two seasons, with at least 10 consecutive games behind him in a particular run, playing in the exact area of the pitch of his choosing, with the exact teamates to get the best out of him, and have been injury free for at least 6 months.

If any of those variables are off, then it's never the players fault, or he is never just 'not good enough' and everyone else is retarded for having a go. However, it takes far less to write off a new Liverpool or Spurs signing, for instance. I know we are here to support United, but I think many deceive themselves.

Welbeck really needs to start taking his chances. It's gotten to the point were very few people are surprised when he misses a good chance. Just look at the comments in yesterday's match day thread. There used to be a time on the Caf were many felt he was superior to Sturridge and that there was little between him and Balloteli. It seems his development has stalled. Our poor wingers are the only reason he gets game time.

Whoa whoa whoa... really?

Not always a goal kick, sometimes he throws a curveball in and will scuff it and it means the keeper can easily throw his cap on it. Yesterday was not a sitter though, tired of people saying it was.

Was not a sitter, but it was a free-shot on goal from 14 yards out and he did not hit the target at least. Not the worst effort, I think most people are pissed off with how that miss fits into the bigger picture of Welbeck's finishing.

It wasn't a gimmie but definitely a chance a United forward should be getting on target.

I still believe unless he gets a loan move for a season, where he can play consistently up top and improve his finishing and confidence about his finishing, he is never going to be close to the player he could be.

At the moment his career is heading the same way as a more attacking version of O'Shea. A decent player who can cover 3-4 different positions and will do an adequate job in each, occasionally having a game where everything clicks and supporters wonder if he's finally realised his potential, only for the next game to be back to normal.

Agreed. However I just don't think he's ever going to improve his goalscoring. I don't think instinct around the box is something that can be learnt. Technique can be improved, but the mentality and natural instinct can't be taught.

Does this wayyy to often. It's funny how shite his finishing is and has become progressively worse

Probably become progressively worse because people have decided to see it in every missed opportunity. RVP misses chances, Ruud missed chances.
