Welbeck is a weird player to watch: for a professional athlete, he has some really weird body control. He looks awkward, almost like he has to think about his movements. Considering how long he's been playing football, he should be more instinctive than that.

He has a gangly style - just because it looks awkward to you, it doesn't mean it's not instinctive to him.

He was quite good last night in parts. I still think he's a little slow to move it on sometimes. He was caught on it about three times in the first half and had most of the crowd against him but he pulled it round which is credit to him.

I agree with that. I think it comes down to him being so comfortable on the ball; he can be inclined to take a touch too many. Still, that comes under 'decision making', something we hope to see him improve on with experience.

Oppan gangly style!
Flip, now I can't get Psy out of my head. Someone should remix that "gif" of that bad skill with gangly style playing in the background.

You had to laugh at that. Some tekkers are bad.
Bad is a understatement. I think Danny just stood there, laughing as well. I think it was at the same moment the defender pulled his hammy

Welbz has surely made the step up this pre-season. He's been sparkling and finally he's adding goals to the rest of his output. I've said in the past he can be the next Dwight Yorke and I stand by that. He's got all the gifts (and lacks the appetite for glam girls so that should help him maintain those gifts!)

No.....just no.

In fairness to him, at least one of those occasions was due to a complete lack of any options whatsoever. I thought, generally, he moved it on quickly where he could.

To use a baseball term, his wheelhouse is bigger than normal because of his sheer size. So although it seems he's lost control of the ball at times, his ranginess means he can still maintain possession. His upper body strength obviously helps with that too.

I don't have the stats to hand, but I'd suspect that he gets dispossessed a lot less often than you'd expect from someone who plays in such congested areas of the pitch.

what a stupid thing to say

To be fair to Danny, the way Hodgson sets up England doesn't help him at all. Gerrard plays as a sweeper, getting in the CBs and Wilshere's way. Wilshere plays as a sort of box to box deep runner, getting in Gerrard and Rooney's way. Rooney plays as a deep 10, drifting in and out from the left, getting in Wilshere, Welbeck and Baines's way, and Welbeck plays deep because he's a good runner and tracker and isn't any good in the box.

So basically everyone gets in each others way and there's no one actually up front. So when Welbeck gets it, he usually HAS to turn around in circles and then try a difficult or backwards pass because theres feck all people apart from Walcott making any attempt to get in front of him.

Yep, Wilshere and Welbeck were on another level to the rest of the team for consistency and quality of passing and moving last night, whenever they held onto the ball for too long it was pretty much always due to poor options. Gerrard in particular was very poor with his off the ball movement at times.

What does having a 'gangly style' even mean? Welbeck isn't even that tall, which is why his cumbersome movements are strange to me. I've seen basketball players with better body control than him. He's a good player who could easily increase his effectiveness on the pitch if he improved his body control.

Why so?

It isn't about height, its about coordination.. Welbeck had growth spurt related problems (mostly effecting his knees) between the ages of 16-20, I'd think rapid changes to your body like that don't help with your coordination.

Yeah, this makes sense. But my point is that it's something that he can work on and fix.

I can't believe this weird idea about Welbeck being 'clumsy' still persists. He was better on the ball than anyone else on the pitch yesterday.

At his best he's excellent on the ball, like last night when he played very well. I do agree though that he can be slightly clumsy on the ball at times though and can occasionally look awkward on it.

I think he just lacks the confidence in front of goal or he panics a bit when he is, which leads to him snatching a lot of his chances or mis-controlling especially. He doesn't really do that outside the box. He is only 22 though and I expect that to get much better.

Those two points are completely unrelated. Welbeck had a really good game yesterday, I merely pointed out something about him that I've noticed over time.

I think he's looked clumsy in the past, especially as a teenager. Always had an awkward look about him with the ball at his feet. I don't think thats a problem at all now though, he's usually excellent with his first touch and close control. He's also a very very strong lad now. The way that defenders just bounce off him at times is incredible.

He's brilliant, expecting good things from him this season.

I think Welbeck is great, we should keep playing him he is our future.

Its amazing how much more comfortable he looks outside the box. If he can bring that sort of control / expression inside the box he will be 1 heck of a player.

Why? Unless you are Welbeck himself then how can you know what is instinctive to him? Hence, stupid comment

And this is a pretty stupid response. You can evaluate how instinctive his movements are just by looking at a person move under pressure, trainers and coaches do it all the time. I've had people do it to me, albeit to a lesser extent because I play rugby and rugby requires a lot less body control and co-ordination than football.
