Nice to see him in that list, but both Rafael and de Gea are having better season.

I agree. I think in De Gea's case he didn't have a smooth start to the season. He was in and out on a weekly basis as SAF switched from him to Lindegaard and back again every week, and we were conceding lots early on which will cloud peoples opinions even though we were putting the GKs in a precarious position by not defending well. He was also getting a lot of (ridiculous) stick from the media which people latch onto.

Rafael I agree has been better and more consistent than Danny this season but hey, I'm glad he's being recognised for what he contributes outside of the penalty box which many don't seem to 'get'

He's as good as anybody out there his age. I still believe Thiago is the very bet in terms of young, central midfielders - but Wilshere really is special.

I reckon Wilshere shades it. But basically I agree - the two of them are definitely ahead of the rest in that category.

Was Danny nominated last season? I forget.

Certainly deserved it last season more than this one.

I'd like to think Welbeck has been nominated due to his overall play but lets be honest he's been nominated because he's a young attacking player who plays for United and England. There are several more deserving nominees.

As I said a bit further up, his two excellent performances against Real Madrid will have also been a big factor. That was probably the most hyped/watched game of any English club in the season so far. Putting in a MOTM performance in one (arguably two) of those games will have definitely got him noticed.

Unless the votes were already in at that point?

Yes, he was.

Barclays sponsored PFA Young Player; Sergio Aguero (Man City), Gareth Bale (Tottenham), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Kyle Walker (Tottenham) and Danny Welbeck (Man United

As for Welbeck, other than scoring, he's actually had a good season in every other area.

I'm not sugar-coating it or anything, his goal return is simply not good enough. That said, this has been offset by the encouragement that can be drawn from his play in other areas. He certainly needs to learn how to finish and play the right pass in the final third, but hopefully this comes over the next year or so. If that doesn't happen, then the harsh reality will be that he isn't good enough to be here, in my view. Don't see why it can't though. He seems to have the necessary arrogance/self-belief.

Well, the fact that he's been starting a lot of our biggest games this season, despite his goal drought, means that Fergie believes he's delivering enough to play without scoring lots of goals. The rest of his game has been THAT good. I don't believe that he won't improve his goal tally significantly next season, but even if he doesn't I doubt he'll be shipped off...

Or perhaps Fergie is just forward thinking and trying to bring him on by playing these games, which is probably not wrong. Fergie is generally forward thinking like that. Like bringing young players off the bench in the Carling Cup final years ago when we had it won against Wigan so they could get the experience of winning things. Not that Welbeck didn't play his part against Real, but I think the experience of that game will be useful for him in the long run.

It's clearly a bit of both. He was probably our best player in both Madrid games (definitely in the first), so it's clearly not just a matter of giving him experience. I think Fergie recognises that his two main attributes at the moment - incredible defensive work-rate, and a superb ability to keep the ball even deep in the opposition half - suit big games against big teams.

Yea, this is right. Of course, his attacking contribution will need to improve though.

Yeah true that. The Bale-Inter affect.

Apart from DDG, who would you have liked to see in Welbeck's place? I'm surprised there's been no mention of Ben Davies of Swansea. Debut season, filling in for the injured Neil Taylor and has looked great.

Welbeck is only there because he plays for us. Sorry, he has not been one of the top 6 young players in the country this season.

Rafael, Nastasic, De Gea and Davies should all be ahead of Welbeck and Wilshere, they're getting picked because of their nationality and the clubs they play for.

Nationality maybe but why would Rafael, De Gea and Nastasic get overlooked because of the clubs they play for?

I think it's much more likely that defenders/keepers hardly ever make shortlists like this.

I meant Wishere and Welbeck got picked because of the combination of their nationality and their club. For example, if Leighton Baines had been playing for a club like United or Arsenal this season I think he'd be much more likely to have been picked on the POTY list.

Fair point about their positions though, that definitely is a bigger factor.

I can't believe he's included in it. Obviously he's immensely talented but he has largely underwhelmed in the PL this season. it's in cup competitions we've seen the best from him. Weird.

Not sure about nominations, but as far as wins go, one goalkeeper and two defenders have ever won Young Player of the Year, goalkeeper Mervyn Day for West Ham in 74/75, Tony Adams in 86/87 and Kyle Walker last year.

For Player of the Year, defenders have won it four times: Norman Hunter in 74, Pallister in 92, McGrath the following year and Terry in 2005. For the keepers, Pat Jennings won in 76 and Shilton won it two years later.

Can I just say that I detest individual awards in football? Mainly because far too many people make far too much of them, allowing what are essentially popularity contests skew their opinions on players and their respective merits.

The players who are most conspicuous in whatever context is relevant will make these lists. Mostly, these players are very good - which is why they are conspicuous in the first place. But it means feck all - it's just an excuse to put on another tacky ceremony and please the bloody sponsors.

Happy soul aren't we?

I hope despite this nomination Danny will keep his feet on the ground and not believe he's better than he really is

He appears to be quite a sorted lad. My son's met him on a few occasions and he's been very amiable.

Think he more than anyone else will be aware that he's not been as good as last season in terms of finishing

I agree with both of these but I think, above Welbeck playing for United, European performances sways the voting quite easily.

Danny was great in both matches against the mighty Madrid this season & I think, based on that, more than anything else, would've gotten him the nod. Similar to how Bale won POTY predominantly on the back of tearing Maicon apart.

For the same reason, DDG should have been a favorite for this award because he's been doing it in Europe & the prem. I guess he's not English enough.

He´s our best striker atm and still played on the wing or not played at all. Van Persie and Rooney should be benched but they are socalled superstars so won´t happen

Really?

Say what?

2012/2013

Welbeck 35 appearances 2 goals.

Hernandez 28 appearances 16 goals

RVP 42 appearances 24 goals

I know you said atm, but seriously, as a striker Welbeck is woeful.

He isn't woeful Rob. It was only last year that the Welbeck Rooney partnership was looking very strong. Many united fans said that we didnt need Van Persie, even with Berbatov leaving. This season he really hasn't played up front very much at all and his confidence in front of goal has taken a hit, but he has it in him to score far more.

I also disagree with him when he says Welbeck is our best striker. I have no idea where he got that from. But its not fair to compare this season's stats for Welbeck with the rest. When was the last time he actually led the line for us this season? He has been extensively used in midfield this year either as an CAM or on the wing. But he definitely needs to improve his finishing and will be good the more he plays up top.

He's really lost his mojo in front of goal and he was never (and probably will never be) a predator. I still think his game has come on a lot this season. Much more powerful and direct. Will go down as a poor(ish) season from him but I've seen enough to be really hopeful about his future career.

He's not a predator, perhaps, but he does have the attributes to be pretty useful in front of goal. A lot of room for improvement there obviously.

Last season his stats were 27(12) apps, 12 goals, which is actually pretty good for a young striker in his first full season in the top flight. That is more of a guide than this season's stats as he was playing up front.

Welbeck is clearly not a striker. He's someTHING entirely new in forward play -Tackling Harrying Intercepting Non Goalscorer.

I believe his agent is in discussions with Hollywood about a movie. The name has been taken, unfortunately.

I must admit I had never noticed how amazing he was at marking a passing midfielder out of the game until he was deployed against Alonso.

Not really an area of the game I want to see him develop given the freedom with which he can play the game and used to at youth level, but no denying how effective he was at it.

Watching him in his teens he looked like a really laid back, languid and slightly flaky footballer. Wouldn't have predicted the incredible work ethic he's shown this season. Of course, you'd have to have a very short memory to think that this was all there was to his game.
