Absolute star. How anyone can't see that, I have no idea. Proved Sir Alex right in dropping Rooney at home to Real Madrid in the knockout stages of the Champions League. And that's saying something. Likely MotM if not for the red card.

Outshone RVP on the biggest stage again. If he ever finds that added consistency in front of goal, he'll go on to be a true great.

Love Danny, was our best player across both ties, in fact I'm struggling to think of a player from either side play as well as h has in both games

People criticise him for a lack of goals and that's understandable but you just have to watch him to know that once they come, and they will come, he's gonna be an absolute world star

Couple more years and he'll be a giant for us

Danny player great but at the expense of Wayne Rooney. Please.

Probably our best player over the two legs, and completely justified why he started both. If you want to use hindsight it seems strange to take it out on Danny. RvP contributed far less, for instance.

Indeed, RVP looked barely fit tonight. Rooney-welbeck would've been a better choice (made entirely with hindsight of course)

He takes care of the ball better than Rooney and is more of a threat in behind. In a counter-attacking setup that's exactly what you want even though Welbeck is patently the inferior player overall.

Yeah, that was exactly the point I was trying to make. Hindsight being the operative word, it just seems ridiculous to have any objections about Welbeck starting.

If Mourinho brings on Modric for Khedira we could be in a little trouble though, Khedira has all the space in the world but just isn't good enough offensively to take advantage of it.

Called it. Though the ref did it more than Mourinho.

Welbeck needed to stay in the center after Nani's red. He had a fantastic game though, our best player over the two legs.

For me the best player in both games for us which is part of the problem. Chances. Just didn't happen. If he can sort that part out, the skys the limit. It's all there. He's talked about just playing the game not the occasion and unlike some, he showed no nerves. We need him to add goals to his play because everything else is there.

Thought he played really well today except where it actually matters again :( Welbeck really should have had at least a goal from this game. He is a brilliant player, carried the ball forward wonderfully at times and continually got into dangerous positions. He really is going to be an amazing player once the scoring side of his game starts to click

I've never been his biggest advocate, but wow. With those 2 performances he really has to be pushing for a first team spot.

We have a great squad.

He was taking his shots a lot quicker than he usually does. There were a lot fewer needless layoffs and blind runs away from the danger areas today.

Those moments of self doubt before he pulls the trigger have always been his biggest stumbling blocks and I'm tentatively hopeful that he's finally over them.

Except he can't finish if his life depended upon it.

So what's the use?

Because you win football games by scoring one more than your opponent.

Welbeck helps your team to control the game with his defensive positioning, workrate and passing, he is an outlet to relieve pressure on your defence and he stretches the opponent's defence, creating more space for others to work in.

Great player.

I knew he was going to force his way into a big game from the beginning of the season. People mocked me for saying I'd prefer him to start over Nani, and there he was tonight playing ahead of Rooney and justifying his selection.

Well we needed him to finish today and it didn't happen. It's the same finishes he has been missing all season.

He has got everything else going for him right now to continue being part of the team but, till he can get his finishing down, he is going to continually be used in the role of work horse rather than striker that we rely on goal for.

I thought he was absolutely class with everything else today - just sucks that scoring has deserted him for most of the season.

While I really love him as a player, he is very much imperfect still. If he could finish he would probably be getting into the team above RvP  . He's so good that the fact he is such a terrible, terrible finisher (and so far he really is poor) is ALMOST irrelevant...

Did an incredible job of balancing his defensive and offensive roles tonight. Brilliant job of hounding alonso and then equally brilliant at running beyond their centre backs. Rooney asked to do something very similar against Barca and busquets a few years ago, failed with his defensive role but scored a very good equaliser. Take your pick which you would prefer but i think it was the right call by Fergie to make us more solid imho...
Hyperbole perhaps but I think he's got everything in his locker to be truly world class very soon, obvious what he lacks but I honestly don't think it's that far away.

I'v been saying a lot recently that he is better at combining defence and attack from the number ten role than Rooney or Tevez ever were, great job today, in Madrid, and also he kept Pirlo quite quiet when he was put on him at the Euros.

The rebound of RVP shot for one, there was another I remember screaming about.

At some point though we have to hope it clicks for him, otherwise he won't start a lot of games while the likes of Chicha, RVP and Rooney are around who do score. He will still start games such as this one where we need certain squad players to do a certain job but, given his ability - he should be a more regular starter.

Kind of like Park - could count on him for some types of games but, not a majority.

I suppose it's not really specific chances, it's those ones where he beats 4 players and then falls over his own ankles at the byline and it rolls painfully out for a goal kick. I do think that it's linked to his finishing/composure, because it only seems to be a real issue in the area, but it's fecking annoying.

No the rebound referred to here is of the Van Persie shot when it hit Lopez and went for a corner, not the Vidic header from the corner.

Oh alright, well I still don't think that was a chance he should be scoring, especially not on his weaker foot. His only real option was to chip Lopez and most strikers would struggle with that on their weak foot.

I don't understand the few in here criticizing him. What chances did he have that he should have finished but didn't? I genuinely can't think of one.
The rebound of the post from vidics header he should have put in the net at least regardless of being offside or not.

Plus he should have punished the keeper spilling RVP shot.

Those are clear chances that he has to start putting away

Is Wellbeck more suited to the role that Yaya Toure is playing for citeh? I thought last night that he has similar qualities in that that he is can dribble, strong on the ball, good movement and links up play quite well. The odd goal and he does a fair bit of tackling too. he is especially good at keeping the ball in tight areas.

he seems more suited to midfield rather than striker.

I like Welbeck very much, proved his talent and worth to many who doubted him, was fantastic last night, what he's doing at his age is excellent, going to be a great player for us in the near future.
