I used to underrate him a lot but after being told off on it here I've been watching him more carefully and he seems to be a wonderful player.

At that age, his lack of shooting confidence is a minor blip likely to be sorted with time. Sometimes an important match-winner is all that it takes to turn these things around completely, as it certainly isn't a matter of ability. I think it's better than if it were the other way around, i.e., less ability with scoring confidence. At least this way you can have reasonable hopes of him becoming a world class striker capable of leading your attack some 2-3 years down the line in a post RvP scenario.

You still have Hernandez for those moments when you urgently need some more fire-power inside the box.

Spot on.

Its kind of the same as with De gea; Would you rather have someone who is more confident with crosses but has less ability in shot-stopping/reflexes, or do you wait until De gea irons out his flaws and you have the complete goalkeeper.

Similar patience is needed with Danny. The long-term benefits far outweigh the short term problems.

5/6 years perhaps

Half a career?

I have no stats, but I don't believe most top strikers took quite so long to learn their trade.

The easy chances Danny has missed this year could have cost us big time. He's lucky that they haven't, and Fergie continues to regard him with fatherly indulgence. That can't and shouldn't last forever.

Shunting him out wide is, I suppose, an effort to give him needed experience without exposing the team to his bad finishing. As long as he continues to perform in that role, he gains time for the magical transformation from missing duck to scoring swan to occur.

Imo, he doesn't have to be prolific, but he does need to fulfill his job description.

I have my doubts if he'll ever be a very prolific striker. Will improve his finishing and still be a damn good player though.

Someone like Kanu ? Sherringham ? Players who were good but not out and out goalscorers.

Interesting comparisons.

The one player I always felt is more Sheringham like is Will Keane. Think he'll provide competition for Danny

Well after 6 years at the top he will be only 25. So hopefully he has more than half his career left in him. If he is still the same player at that age, then he won't be at United.

There is no doubt that Fergie won't indulge him in the future but again that will be more of a specific question if the problems he has now are recurring at 24/25 rather than now.

I don't think he will ever be a prolific player and that is why we are playing him out wide more and more these days.

I think he has all the attributes to be a top striker. If he had finished half of the chances he fashions then he could easily score 15-20 a season. He is still young and much like Rooney before him, he will score more as he matures.

Except the most important one, he can't fookin' finish. I love what he brings to our side, but I've lost all faith in him with the ball in front of the onion sack. Does my head in.

Thankfully, finishing can be taught! Rooney was much the same way in his younger years. As he got older he managed to notch a few 30+ goal seasons, so I wouldn't be worrying too much about Welbeck. He will get there eventually!

Only difference being Rooney was among the best in the world at Danny's age.

Having a very interest debate with a Leeds supporting friend of mine about Danny at the moment.

Dislike United as expected but seems to have a thing about Danny in particular. Said he is over rated and his 'stats are wank'. Said he doesn't start I said there is no shame at 22 not being able to get in the team ahead of Rooney & RVP.

Also laughed claiming we overrate him and cited a fan that called in 606 saying he could be the next Drogba, this really tickled him but when I asked him what Drogba was doing at 22 he jumped to something else.

Danny seems to be an easy target because his 'stats are wank' but we are talking football here not American football, if you have 2 eyes you can see what he brings to the side.

I doubt fans of other clubs will think Welbeck is all that, they don't watch has as regularly as we do so stats will play a much bigger role in their opinion than people who watch every one of his games.

Even then we have plenty of people on this forum who think the exact same thing.

I can very easily see how opposition fans would think he was wank. If he played for someone else, we would too. His initial impression is of an awkward try hard who's terrible in front of goal.

We see his better points, as well as his progress in the Academy.

His build up play and work ethic is very much understated by the media. For Giggs' goal against QPR, Danny lost the ball (I think) then ran back, won it and simply dispatched of it. All the plaudits went to Nani for the assist, and Giggs for the finish but Welbeck's work was totally ignored.

Welbeck is the kind of player who frustrates the hell out of me one second and makes me want to scream his name in joy the next. His work-ethics, his willingness to win, his skills with the ball - all first class. But at the moment he is below average when it comes to finishing. Hopefully that is down to lack of experience and is something which will improve - however Welbeck has always been a bit like that - even going back to academy-level. He was a brilliant player - but he has never been, and probably never will be a great goalscorer.

So what it comes down to for Welbeck is whether he can improve his goalscoring up to a level where his allround-play makes up for the fact that he doesn't score enough - or not. His future at United will depend entirely up to that. For regardless of what I think of his allround-play - he simply hasn't done enough this season. But given his natural talent, his age AND his allround-play - he will not have the same pressure to succeed as most other strikers will at United.

Very good again. That chance from corner was a bad miss but it was also offside.

He's been brilliant. His ball control was so good. But he could have done better with that rebound off the keeper

Outstanding half. Alonso hasn't been involved at all at Welbeck has caused the most problems going forward as well.

If Mourinho brings on Modric for Khedira we could be in a little trouble though, Khedira has all the space in the world but just isn't good enough offensively to take advantage of it.

The english Pele without the composure in front of goal.

I've always thought he is slightly overrated on here but he has stepped up in a big way, looks totally at home at this level.

Once he gets that little bit more confidence/coolness in the box he's going to be absolutely top class.

Same. He stood his ground and impressed on the biggest stage. I don't think there's a Manchester United fan that still doubts his ability and determination to make it. Means all the more for our local fans.

I'm hoping that today will prove to be a turning point.

A lot of the criticism directed towards his supposedly poor finishing is down to hesitation and a tendency to defer to senior colleagues.

Regardless of the fact he didn't get on the score sheet today, his instincts seemed to be sharper than I've ever seen them before. Hopefully the vote of confidence that Fergie gave him against Real will be the making of him.

The next person I talk to who tells me they're not sure Welbeck will make it is going to get punched in the throat*

*in my head anyway, the blind cnuts

Well that's what I'm saying, he's got everything there, just needs to develop that confidence in himself and that coolness. It's not a criticism, at 21 I wouldn't expect him to have it, but it's the thing that he most needs to improve and when he does he'll be top class.
