So, we should be loyal to Welbeck and give him a chance but we should just send Berbatov packing?

That's nice of you.

Yes because it would be a first for Fergie to send big names packing to put his trust in his youngsters wouldn't it?

Oh and I really don't care how "nice" it would be, if it benefits Manchester United then so be it. Its not like we're going to be making anyone homeless is it? Since when has SAF and sentiment ever gone together?

Like I said, Welbeck will not come back to Manchester United to be fourth choice. I'll wager you that.

Welbeck can play on the wing too, though. He'll probably be first choice back-up. And I don't think he'll completely rule out a career at Manchester United just because he'll be fourth choice striker for one season. It's a big thing to turn down such a big club, never mind your hometown club, so I think there'd be a bit more to it than the immediate future - it'd be about whether Sir Alex tells him he believes he can make a long-term impact at the club. I think he probably would.

So, your wager is that as long as Chicharito, Berbatov and Rooney are still at the club he won't come back? I'd very much like to take you up on that.

I meant him playing as a striker, them remaining isn't a problem, its if he's clearly behind them in the pecking order, if that makes sense.

There isn't a clear pecking order though, that's why we have Hernandez ahead of Berbatov at the moment despite him being third choice (by your definition) at the start of the season. The players that suit the team best - overall, tactically or form-wise - will be picked, and Welbeck offers something completely different to the other three currently at the club.

I think its pretty sensible that if we get a decent offer for Berbatov (over 20million say). Then selling him would provide us with more money for midfielders (our biggest weakness), while also allowing Welbeck 25+ starts next year?

De Rossi is the only player that's remotely close to Essien in that type of role. I'd swap Berba for him, considering the long term, easily....in a heartbeat. It's a no brainer.

Not that'd it happen. Jus sayin'

Aren't people over-rating him a little bit, admittedly I've only seen him only in international and champions league matches but he hasn't been that impressive at all.

Long term? He is two years younger but relies on his pace and energy, so he won't really be able to continue for that long past 30. Berbatov, however is all about vision and technique, I can easily see him playing well until his late 30s like Sheringham. Not too mention Berbatov is top class and proven on all levels.

Yes, they are.

Putting aside the fact that these swap deals are rarer than honest recruitment consultants I find it strange that people are happy to jettison our top scorer for a player who's unproven in the PL and has been largely average in the CL. I think De Rossi would improve our midfield and it's clear that's the area we are weakest in but why sell Berbatov? I shudder to think where we would be in the league without his goals this season. If we want De Rossi we should buy him outright.

Oh and the Welbeck point is ridiculous- he wouldn't just be fourth choice striker he would be competing for a place on the wings, he would get a good amount of game time in the fa/league cup even if there were no injuries (unlikely) to his competition.

Essien is in a completely different league mate.

'Swapping' Berba for De Rossi would be the worst bit of business since Enron.

What's with the Berbatov swap vibe?

De Rossi is a peice of the puzzle in my opinion. United need that type of player, he is a fine all rounder and would add a dimension to Uniteds play, he is strong in the air, good with both feet too.

His game should suit the prem and his attitude would suit United. Keep Berbatov and sign de Rossi. The only area i feel united lack in is Midfield. Carrick is a good player but nothing special and has the unpopular knack of losing the ability to kick a ball for large parts of the season. Scholes is a genius but he is past his best and cant roll back the years as regularly. Anderson is an enigma, but if people are still talking about your potential after 3 or 4 inconsistent years at a club then the warning signs are surely there. Fletcher is going through a bad patch but the signs point to him being a mainstay, but he is not the answer, more a good guy to have around.

De Rossi embodies alot of the qualities of Fletcher and Carrick combined but with an added areal threat and the ability to score goals.

That or go for one of the young germans. There are a few that look gold in my eyes, these germans....

I give up, there's obviously some other De Rossi who plays for Roma and Italy that I've not seen. Some type of a midfielder who can be compared to Essien and is a better player than Fletcher.

If we Did get De Rossi, it would be amazing. But I think he may go to Spain. He is obviously leaving Roma who are introuble and there seem to be family problems too.

A Berba swap is not out of the question. Berba is 30 and Hernandez is making a huge impact. If this happens it will be Berba plus cash imo.

Roma are about to be taken over.

I bet he'll sign a new deal at Roma in a 'shock' turnaround.

Roma are about to be taken over by people with cash. So Roma are no longer in trouble.

and..... why is he obviously leaving then?

they have been about to be taken over for months at this point. Who knows if it will actually happen in the end. If they don't get CL football this season it could easily impact both their ability to hold on to their top players and a proposed takeover.

Been confirmed by UNICredit who own half of the club confirmed the takeover should be completed within the week and that theyhave secured a €50 mil credit facility for the club. It's a group of investors headed by Thomas DiBenedetto. As Serie A have now only 3 qualifying spots for the champions league it looks pretty certain they won't be qualifying.

He'd be first choice alongside Alonso easily. Besides, I'd be very surprised if Diarra lasts another season at Real.

I'm not so sure. Mourinho seems to rate Khedira highly - he's younger, probably on less money and has a very bright future. he's also a more defnsive minded player in a team with a delicate balance.

My post was in response to suggestions that its a foregone conclusion that he'll go to Real Madrid - seemingly because a lot of people think that every half decent player will end up there.

He can sign a new deal but his performances might not improve anytime soon. I think he is in a worse situation with the fans than Rooney was/is here. The last 18-24 months have been difficult according to him and it will take some doing to get back to his original form.

He will obviously still stay with Roma after all this, like Totti

Italians seldom venture out of their home country and play in foreign leagues, and he's a Roma fan

Mourinho also rates De Rossi. Who is superior to Khedira in every department Khedira is good in. Plus unlike Khedira, De Rossi can get on the score sheet. If the Roman is available, be sure Real will try to pounce.

Maybe they do. I think he will go there because Jose tried to get him in when he arrived at the Bernabeu. Just like he had at Inter. I'm close to certain De Rossi won't be playing for any Italian side not named Roma.

Manchester United Could Be Set to Sign Bargain £14m Italian Midifeld Maestro

Manchester United Could Be Set to Sign Bargain £14m Italian Midifeld Maestro | CaughtOffside

Daniele de Rossi is edging closer to the exit door at AS Roma.

Manchester United chief scout Martin Ferguson has made regular checks on De Rossi since the New Year, while Manchester City scout Barry Hunt has also been watching the midfielder.

With just over a year to run on his existing Roma deal, Gazzetta dello Sport says De Rossi is not close to agreeing new terms.

Roma will be reluctant to allow De Rossi to wind down his contract and is prepared to sell.

A deal for less than £14 million could be on for United given De Rossi’s contract situation.

Interestingly, new Roma sports director Walter Sabatini was in Manchester on the weekend.

Please let this be true...........

I wonder if it's called caughtoffside because to believe a rumour from them is a bit like being caught in an offside position.

De Rossi hasn't really turned out to be the player he was expected to be imo.

Not really impressed by him recently.

Caughtoffside's source is Tribal Football. I'm liking our chances of bringing de Rossi to United!

If it hasn't happened the last 94 times we've been linked with him, I don't expect it to happen this time.
