We need a playmaker.

De Rossi would be a complete waste of money.

We need someone who is capable to stop players like Iniesta to damage us in the same way he did. A playmaker isn't capable to do that. Anyway we have Carrick and Anderson capable of covering that role.

I have mixed feelings about Hargreaves. He had been out for so much time that Im starting losing faith on him (that he will return on his former best). What do you think about that?
Personally, I trust Steadman. He has yet to fail when fixing up top athletes knees, and Hargreaves' only issue has been those dodgy knees. Once that issue is out of the way he should return consistently to the level he was at when Bayern last won the champions league. When he humbled the inform Galacticos. Which will be excellent for us if it occurs.

what the season he managed a whole 19 games in all competitions... that sound just a little underwhelming to me

no the thought of getting less than 20 games a season out of him next season is underwhelming...
Well I was talking of his form int hat period not the number of games. With his knees sorted IMO he could easily play the most games for us next seaono. He is one naturally fit lad minus the darned knee problem.

I hope you are right my friend.

Signing someone like De Rossi would allow Carrick the freedom to go forward and control the play more often, like he generally does when partnered with Fletcher. Plus I'm sure Anderson would then get more opportunities in that more attacking role in our 4231.

And if Carrick isn't a playmaker, I'd love (or more likley hate) to hear your definition of playmaker.

Hate to say this but heard a scouse fan on talk sport discussing CL final, and MU strengths and weaknesses. Sadly i agreed!

Defence - Quality (but didn't give good showing in final)but lacks good cover from midfield.

Midfield - Good, but not able to either close up shop ala chelski, or keep the ball ala barca.

Attack - Quality, but lacks service from midfield.

Anderson - Yound player, who should be on the fringes of our 1st elevan, not a starter at this stage in his career.

Carrick - Dependable, but unable to own a game and required strong DM next to him.

Fletcher - Much improved, but for me still a squad player.

Giggs - Age, and a player to come on in big games and not start.

Scholes - As above.

Hargreaves - Sorely missed.

I believe we sorely need an enforcer, and think De Rossi fits the bill perfectly. If not him, then somebody equal.

Personally, I think we need to cut our losses as far as Hargreaves is concerned; even if he does return to fitness, how do we know he is still going to be the same player (hypothetically, of course) as the one who went off to Canada? It is a huge risk even if he does get playing again. I hope he proves me wrong, but the odds at the moment must surely be stacked against him.

With that in mind, I agree with the previous post that we need an enforcer, and De Rossi would be ideal. We had someone in the newbies a couple of weeks ago claiming to be ITK and claiming that we were interested in De Rossi, take that for what its worth though.

As for Roma being reluctant to sell him, I think the financial pressure would prove too much for them. De Rossi has said he wouldnt like to play in Italy for another side, and I can imagine him suiting the english league perfectly. He would bring strength and leadership into our midfield, a great defensive engine also capable of getting forward. I rate him as a slightly improved version of Hargreaves.

Good summary.

With Hargreaves' fitness an ongoing issue, De Rossi would be the right type/quality, but he seems to be deeply committed to Roma, team captain, his father is a coach there also.

Everyone prattling on today about how this £80million could be spent on De Rossi, I realised that he'd never come to this club. We're Manchester United, he loves Roma. I doubt there's a foreign club out there that Roma fans hate more than Manchester United.

they're heavily in debt and need to sell

Plus he said he wouldn't want to play against Roma so that rules out Italy. So that really narrows it down to just a few clubs. Chelsea already have 2 players in that mould. City just bought Barry. Still, can't see it happening though.

I don't think Fergie will be looking for midfielders this summer

Would be a complete waste of money.

You're having a laugh. The addition of a world class defensive minded mid is not a complete waste of money. A partnership of him and Carrick would be brilliant. Carrick could start getting into more forward positions where his pin point passing would be lethal.

Good summary that. I agree with everything bar possibly the assessment of Fletcher. He's been consistently surpassing himself in the big games for long enough now that I'm starting to believe he can more than hold his own against any midfield in the world. He can't do it all by himself though, and I'd love to see a player of De Rossi's ilk and calibre sign for us.
